“Caduceus.”
As the name left my lips a chime vibrated through me. Great. Of all the choices, I had to voice my deep seeded daddy issues. Why couldn’t I just take up stripping like others?

“Most of the time, but he’s known to take some under his wing.” The clouds voice had a tone took on a nonchalance. “Maybe you’ll be special or something.”
“Why do you say that?”
“He already helped you out. Or he’s like a drug dealer. Your first dose is free.” Frequency chuckled. “I mean he does look like a mafia gangster.”

“You look lost.” Cosmos’s soft voice traveled on the air along with the warm desert heat.
He slid down from one of the dunes behind me and moved to where the water lapped close to his feet. The stars reflected in his shades. I glanced away when I caught myself staring at the curve of his lips. What was I thinking? He probably didn’t even look like this in real life.
“Nice Avatar.” He looked me up with a quirk of his lip.
“Thanks. And I’m not lost.” I said. “Just debating on which direction I want to go.”
“Usually, it’s best to have a destination in mind here.” His chuckle sent a delectable shiver down my spine. “You can easily get lost.”
“Maybe I want to get lost,” I said. “That’s half of the fun.”
“It sounds like you’re running away from something.”
“What better place to run?” My voice barely raised above a whisper.

“What?”
His dark red coat ruffled in the wind as he spread his arms wide. “RiftSpace. That’s what we tend to call this virtual representation of the internet.”
I stood up and looked across the sea as we floated along. Waves of ones and zeros rippled to the horizon in all directions. Above us, the tiny binary twinkled like fake stars. I staggered as my vision swirled and my head swam. I’d had enough swimming of any kind for today. My rescuer stepped forward to put his hands on my shoulders and the spicy scent of cinnamon mixed with warm woody and floral aromas I didn’t recognize.

Dreams in Digital
A shadow passed over me, blocking out the dying light for a breath’s time. I turned, shading my eyes with my hand and gulped at the creature hovering in the air above me. It had the head and body of a lion with large bat like wings extending from behind its shoulder blades. Two rams horns rose up from the golden mane that crowned its head and a scorpion tail whipped back and forth in the air behind it.
“A manticore?” I croaked out. “Whoever created this must be a hardcore fantasy fan.”
With a roar that overtook any other noise, the manticore flapped up and swooped down in a dive bomb aimed directly at me.

Tuesday Teaser #1
So, I'm dusting off my poor, forgotten blog and will endeavor to keep up with it more. M.R. Graham and Qui Est In Literis has come up with a brilliant idea that I am using as well.
Each Tuesday I will post a teaser of one of my current works in progress. We invite our writer buddies to join in and post on their blogs as well. Don't have a blog, but you are writing? No worries. Feel free to post in the comments.
The rules:
Post a link, image, quote, or excerpt related to or taken from your current WIP.
State the name of the WIP.
Do NOT explain yourself! Resist the urge to wax poetic. This is a hint, not an outline.
Here we go:
My mother named me Serenity to bring peace into her life. It didn't work out for either of us. That fact remained evident as she tossed the checkers board at my face with an ear piercing screech that bounced off of the eggshell white walls of Santa Rosa’s common room. I shoved my chair back from the oak table and hopped to my feet. Her mahogany hair slid over once her hazel eyes as she glared at me with her hands balled into fists around her t-shirt.
