Life Inside the Giant Porno-Scanner

By David Swanson

John Whitehead's "The Freedom Wars: What You Can Do to Preserve Your Rights" came out earlier this year, before airport patdowns alerted so many Americans to the possibility that our government's post-911 in-security theater might have some flaws in it. This little handbook covers all the concerns that the TSA-as-sexy-news-topic has raised, but in a much broader context. It turns out we're being stripped in more ways than we can count.

The book is a handy guide to the ways in which we're moving toward total surveillance, and it does a great job of explaining why that's a problem -- unlike so many arguments that rely on our sentiments about "privacy" to do the thinking for us. The book is also a call to action and a pep-talk for potential activists.

The December 8th Project

http://december8thproject.com

[image error][image error]John Lennon believed that artists can change the world, and that each of us has a responsibility to create a better future.  We are gathering creative people on the 30th anniversary of his murder, to do good. Human beings can be killed, but the power of human creativity endures.

Each participant’s name is linked to a place where you can purchase his/her work. They have pledged to donate any 12/8/10 royalties via this link to the charity listed after the link.

Let’s rewrite the story of December 8th. “A dream we dream alone is just a dream. A dream we dream together is reality.”

Marley Brant, author, donating to The Salvation Army

Mike Gerber, author, donating to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence

Bob Harris, TV and travel writer, donating to Kiva.org

AUDIO: Deanna Spingola and David Swanson discuss "War Is A Lie"

Deanna Spingola was an informed host with good calls from listeners. This audio is choppy for first 30 seconds or so, just speed past that: mp3.

Derision Points

Here's an entertaining book I just read: Derision Points: Clown Prince Bush the W: The Real Story of His Decision Points by Ted Cohen.

Two words about the title. First, this book has nothing to do with Bush's book and is not a critique of it. Second, this book is much funnier than the title which was presumably written by a marketer.

This is a based-on-facts fictional account of George W. Bush as a young drunk. Its political utility may be limited given the fact that our presidents seem to obey the same forces whether or not they are dry drunk morons who come from terrible and negligent parents and backgrounds of great privilege.

But the book is pretty amusing on its own, even apart from its connection to our most famous war criminal.
