We love classic Trek, because, there, Kirk is not a womanizer.
This is part of why this episode disturbed me so much. Because it’s almost fifty years later and this isn’t part of the Captain Kirk character that makes it into the remakes. Because there’s nothing alien at all to me about Charlie’s anger, how he lashes out with horrific consequenses at the women around him who don’t immediately return his affections and dare to enjoy the company of other men (and with the exception of the man he disappears in the gym all his victims that we see are women).
Almost fifty years, and all I can think about when I watch this is how this one scene from this one episode of a low-budget space show with women in revealing costumes and its own share of problematic shit is more up front and no-nonsense about telling teenage boys and the men they grow up to be that your feelings do not trump the feelings of women than the overwhelming majority of the rest of our popular culture today.

Fuck slut shaming.
It’s not slut shaming, it’s called self respect. You just don’t show your breasts all the time, they’re privates. Shut the fuck up.
why should anyone’s nipples be such a big deal though? it’s a bit weird to say that it’s okay for men to be shirtless and not women… I respect myself quite a bit and sometimes I’ve posed topless. it doesn’t make me a bad person and if someone loses respect over me showing a body part that literally everyone has, they’re regressive.
The reason breasts are considered “privates” is because misogynist culture oversexualizes the female breast despite it not being a sexual organ. The fact the males can go around shirtless in most public places (even if they are large enough to have breast-like pecs themselves) and females can’t is sexism, end of story.
Self respect isn’t about rather or not you show your breasts, it’s about being comfortable with your choices. If you want to pose topless, that’s okay. If you don’t, that’s okay too. What’s not okay is doing what the girls in the top picture are doing and saying you’re better than someone else because you choose one way and they chose another.
Telling women that they should be ashamed for choosing something that doesn’t hurt them or others (and by hurt them, I mean like choosing to do drugs or something like that), you are contributing to the patriarchy and oppression.
bolded for emphasis
LOL THEY’RE PRIVATES
Boobs are as sexual as hands and mouths - they all have other primary functions and just happen to be used for pleasure, too.
I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how ridiculous it is how people sexualize women’s breasts. I was shamed out of nursing my infant because of jackass family members who thought it was “disgusting” that I’d use a “sexual” organ to feed my child.
Look, I like boobs as much as the next queer gal, but that’s no more than other body parts I happen to have a personal affinity for. You, personally, viewing a body part as sexual does not magically make it so. But if something is socially deemed inappropriate for public viewing by the given culture, somehow it’s imbued with magical sexuality that is often completely incompatible with its actual sexual characteristics. Hell, I think genitals are oversexualized in this fucking culture. You realize people use dicks to pee, right?
Sex occupies such a teensy, tiny, itty bitty bit of the time we live, but it dictates so much about our culture that it’s really fucking ridiculous.
