Instantly Iconic Photo of the Day: 84-year-old former school teacher Dorli Rainey is helped away from the scene of an Occupy Seattle protest at Westlake Park after being doused with pepper spray.
Rainey was among dozens of protesters hit with the "less-than-lethal agent" after refusing to move from the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pine Street following a march of solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.
Rainey, a longtime presence in local politics, wrote The Stranger an email afterward, saying she stopped by the protest on her way to a public meeting on a transportation issue.
"Knowing that the problems of New York would certainly precipitate action by Occupy Seattle, I thought I better check it out," she wrote, "especially since only yesterday the City Government made a grandiose gesture to protect free speech."
Her email continues:
Well free speech does have its limits as I found out as the cops shoved their bicycles into the crowd and simultaneously pepper sprayed the so captured protesters.
She credits an Iraq vet with saving her from being trampled. "In the women's movement," she concludes, "there were signs which said: 'Screw us and we multiply."

Ashlynn Conner, a pretty...

Ashlynn Conner, a pretty 'All-American' girl, was driven to suicide by bullies at just 10 years old.
The day before she died, Ashlynn came home in tears.
Kids had bullied Ashlynn for years, calling her a "slut," "fat," and "ugly," so that day's incident seemed relatively minor to [her mother] Stacy: The girls had poked fun at Ashlynn's initials, "A.C.," saying it sounded like "air conditioner."
Three different teachers at the school had told Ashlynn to "stop tattling" after she reached out for help, the girl told her mother. It was the Thursday before Veterans Day, and Stacy told Ashlynn she should go straight to the principal the following Monday if the bullying continued.
"But she didn't want to wait until Monday," Stacy told The Daily.
Ashlynn's older sister found her hanging by her neck from a scarf in a bedroom closet on Friday night. She was pronounced dead before 9 p.m. at a local hospital, another inconceivably young victim of elementary school bullying.
oh my god, this is just heartbreaking. this poor girl. what is WRONG with children that they would say such terrible things to her?
My thoughts/feelings on this are simply unprintable.
TEN. YEARS. OLD. And people wonder why I am so desperately afraid of putting my kids back in public school.

AP photographer Mark Terrill made of one the most visually stunning basketball pictures I've seen in quite awhile. He shot this during the Carrier Classic NCAA college basketball game aboard USS Carl Vinson.
He used a Nikon D3 with a 24-70mm lens set at 24mm. The exposure was 1/800 @ f4 rated at 2000iso. Mark added no additional lighting to the scene. He simply took advantage of the television lights installed around the court on the carrier deck and mother nature's own light show.
It looks like a shoop, but it is not a shoop. *o*

This is a big deal. Dan Siegel, legal...

This is a big deal. Dan Siegel, legal adviser to Oakland, Calif. Mayor Jean Quan, resigned over the brutalization of Occupy Oakland protesters and says he now supports the Occupy Wall Street movement. Approximately an hour ago, he wrote on Twitter, "No longer Mayor Quan's legal advisor. Resigned at 2 am. Support Occupy Oakland, not the 1% and its government facilitators."
This came after he encouraged people to mobilize to Occupy Oakland late last night, where another raid resulted in upwards of 32 arrests, according to Occupy Oakland leaders. Police declared the park a crime scene Monday and forced media to leave.
If more high-ranking municipal officials have an attack of conscience and do the right thing, what then? It appears city and state governments are already a titch frightened of the Occupy movement. If their own people refuse to obey or resign in protest, perhaps it will be time to take this a little more seriously. Change from the bottom on up, folks.

THESE COLORS DON'T RUN, UNLESS IT'S FROM QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROLE OF CORPORATE MONEY IN NATIONAL POLITICS OR WHY SENATORS ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE THEMSELVES EXEMPT FROM THE SAME LAWS THEY PASS FOR THE OTHER 99.9% OF THE NATION!
OTHER THAN THAT, WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF WHY WE CAN'T SEEM TO SEPARATE THE CHURCH FROM THE STATE DESPITE BEING FOUNDED ON A SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, PLUS ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT 9/11 AND SUBSEQUENT WARS, OR WHERE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN BAILOUT MONEY WENT AND WHY NOBODY WAS ARRESTED, LET ALONE JAILED FOR TANKING THE ECONOMY, THESE COLORS TOTALLY STAY PUT!
… UNLESS YOUR BUMPER STICKER WAS PRINTED IN A SWEATSHOP IN CHINA OR MALAYSIA, IN WHICH CASE THESE COLORS WILL RUN WHENEVER IT RAINS!
AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!
