A Palestinian family cry after their home was demolished by Israeli forces in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Hanina on February 5, 2013. Although East Jerusalem belongs to Palestinians, they have to obtain building permits from Israel — an almost impossible task — as Israel continues its ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in its goal to ‘Judaize’ Jerusalem.

Israeli authorities claim that the building was constructed without proper permits and that its structure was not sound. The 33-member family says it was waiting to receive permits.

Palestinians also struggle to meet the required conditions to apply for a permit. For example, the cost of obtaining permits can be as much as the cost of construction of the actual building.

Not only do they rarely issue permits to Palestinians to build on their own land, Israel continues building settlements on said land. Approximately 192,000 and 330,000 Jewish settlers live illegally in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, Palestine. The Jewish-only settlements in which they live are illegal under international law. Furthermore, the Israeli government assists Israeli settlers in taking over Palestinian homes.

Israel refuses to halt settlement construction as a precondition to resume peace talks.

I will never understand how anyone can support this.

a very great many of us - Jews and Israelis, both - DON’T.

Today the British Parliament voted to legalize gay marriage in the UK. The vote was 400 to 175 - a majority of 225.

in other words…YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reblogging for those numbers. :-)

And of course this sort of news always warrants a photo of a skinny, white, feminine, lesbian couple. Because that’s one of only two same-sex couples that the public wants to see (the other being a white, slim, slightly muscled, not-too-feminine, gay male couple).

can we please add in here that exactly zero of the lesbian couples i know would ever have a wedding like this???

I’ve attended lesbian weddings like this. So?

gabrielgadfly:

I want to talk to you about The Happy Project and about the man behind it. Michael Milligan — better known as MCM — is the head honcho behind 1889 Labs, the small indie publisher that brings my books to you.

About nine months ago, MCM’s wife was in a very bad car accident. She was struck by a car that was backing down a one-way street, and suffered critical injuries — collapsed lung, brain damage, broken bones, and more.

The good news is that she is recovering, but it’s a very slow process. It’s been 295 days since her accident, and the head wound from the skull fracture is only just now healing.

Long-term care is the sort of thing that drains your reserves — it does it physically, it does it emotionally, it does it financially. The Happy Project is a way to push back against that drain. It’s a chronicle of little victories against massive trauma. I hope you’ll click through and read some of MCM’s posts.

It’s also an opportunity for me to give back to the man who gave my poetry a chance when no one else would. My works wouldn’t be out there for you to read if it weren’t for MCM.

There’s a Paypal donation link on The Happy Project. Every dollar collected there helps MCM and his wife and his children win a little victory against this monster.

You’re helping me and my publisher if you give to The Happy Project, so I want to give something to you, too. If you donate $10 USD, I will send you a handwritten copy of any poem from my collection.

Just click here to donate, then send me a message to let me know which poem you want and where I should send it. Thank you.

via stfusexists + ourmobileworld: The Times of India is running 1/4 page ads on why men should respect women. This is huge. There are no words for how happy I am to post this vs everything I usually reblog.

(Waiting for the NY Times to do something similar. Of course, they’d have to take time off from justifying the actions of gang rapists.)

They have it in other languages, or only English?

This is brilliant.

Literary Birthday - 5 February

Happy Birthday, William S. Burroughs, born 5 February 1914, died 2 August 1997

10 Quotes

Silence is only frightening to people who are compulsively verbalizing.
A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what’s going on. A psychotic is a guy who’s just found out what’s going on.
Writers, like elephants, have long, vicious memories. There are things I wish I could forget.
As a young child I wanted to be a writer because writers were rich and famous. They lounged around Singapore and Rangoon smoking opium in a yellow pongee silk suit. They sniffed cocaine in Mayfair and they penetrated forbidden swamps with a faithful native boy and lived in the native quarter of Tangier smoking hashish and languidly caressing a pet gazelle.
Like all pure creatures, cats are practical.
And if you’re doing a deal with a religious son of a bitch, get it in writing.
A writer does not own words any more than a painter owns colours. So lets dispense with this originality fetish… Look, listen and transcribe and forget about being original.
In deep sadness there is no place for sentimentality. It is as final as the mountains: a fact. There it is. When you realize it you cannot complain.
My characters are quite as real to me as so-called real people; which is one reason why I’m not subject to what is known as loneliness. I have plenty of company.
It is to be remembered that all art is magical in origin - music, sculpture, writing, painting - and by magical I mean intended to produce very definite results.

Burroughs was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, painter, and spoken word performer. A primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major post-modernist author, Burroughs wrote 18 novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. He collaborated on projects and recordings with performers and musicians, and made many appearances in films.

I’ve been getting a lot of these lately, and I guess I just want you all to know what I think when I read them.
