Of constructs and fog

Coolest thing EVER: Vikki Ford, someone I do not actually know in meatspace, was inspired by Timepiece to compose a short piece of music. It is *awesome* – totally sounds like walking in the fog to me!

Writing Timekeeper – Post 3: Trevelyan, Cayenne, carpenters, and Easter eggs

There are moments that strike terror into the heart of the writer. Moments when your reader alter-ego, dozing in the back of your brain, suddenly lifts its head and points out a huge gaping hole in your plot or your worldbuilding. Or, if you’re really lucky, both.
This is usually something your reader-alter-ego ought to have [...]

Writing Timekeeper – post 2, The Stars Look Down and Writing What You Know

So I was just on this Arisia panel, and therefore I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the question of whether “Write What You Know” is good advice for beginner writers, and how exactly that squares with the writing of speculative fiction. Most spec fic writers, as the panel’s intro pointed out, have no [...]

A Thought Regarding Eight Lines Of Dialogue In The Recent Les Miserables Movie

(I intend to return to “the writing of Timekeeper” series shortly, but for the moment, a comment on a different subject.)
I know the stage show Les Miserables very very well, and in consequence there is a lot I could say about the movie. So much that it’s actually prevented me from saying anything, up until [...]

Writing Timekeeper: Post 1, Napoleon and the Conquest of the World

When I was most of the way through the Timekeeper writing process, I became aware of the existence of a book entitled Napoleon and the Conquest of the World: A Fictional History. Written in 1836 by a disgruntled Frenchman (whose name is alternatively given as Louis Geoffroy and Louis-Napoleon Geoffroy-Chateau), it may well be the [...]

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop!

I have been tagged in The Next Big Thing, a branching pyramid-of-prose where authors discuss their latest release or WIP.  I was tagged by fellow Clarion 09er Liz Argall—writer of comics, a novel-in-progress, and wonderful, wrenching short stories that have been published in Apex, Daily Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, and several other places.
What is the [...]

So how geeky is it, exactly…

… to dress up as one of your own characters?
Katarina Rasmirovna and I, ready to head out for the lovely and talented Dawn Metcalf’s steampunk-themed party:
(And a good time was had by both of, er, me. Thanks to my/our hostess!)
