Ancient Canada Blog Tour

I’ve been to Canada quite a few times in my life and hope to visit several times more before I kick the bucket. One thing which had never occurred to me is Canada might have a rich mythology. Silly, I know, since every culture has legends. I’d just never thought of it before FMB Blog Tours introduced me to Ancient Canada. Now I’m beyond intrigued! How do Canadian myths differ from American myths? Inquiring minds want to know. If you’re unfamiliar with Canadian mythology, Ancient Canada is your opportunity to get a taste. Until then, how about an interview with the author, Clinton Festa!
Reena Jacobs: Tell us about your most recent publication.
Clinton Festa: Ancient Canada is a fantasy epic that follows two sisters, Lavender and Marigold. Lavender has the ability to see life and death, which is a gift they need to survive after their exile. Marigold has no gift. She’s not jealous, but even for Lavender to make a journey throughout this mythological world would be very difficult without her older sister by her side. Because it’s mythology, it hits deep on some psychological and philosophical tones. The book also has weight loss properties, if you read it while exercising on a treadmill. It’s 370 pages, but since it’s an e-book, it has no calories.
RJ: That’s good to know. I’ve been talking to my husband lately about weight loss. Which of your characters do you relate to most? And why? Only choose one. I know all about the split personality going on with your left and right brain.
CF: Who told you about my split personality? Did one of me do that? When developing the characters, I figured I better know my two main ones pretty well. So Lavender and Marigold are based off the left and right hemispheres of my brain, like you said. That makes Lavender more technical and scientific, while Marigold is more artistic and creative. So my answer is going to be one of those two. Lavender struggles with the sense of self-doubt and the nagging suspicion that, because of her gift, she was created evil. Marigold has no gift, so she struggles with a sense of uselessness and helplessness. I relate better to Marigold (my answer) in that sense.
RJ: I love the idea of two personalities aligning to complement one another. How much of your life do you put into your stories?
CF: A lot. Most of the deeper ideas came from conversations with my wife. I’ve gotten involved with a bunch of group reads (email askmarigold@ancientcanada.com if you’ve got a group), and it’s been fun for both me and the readers to talk about the behind-the-scenes stuff. For example, the first full chapter is narrated by Heather, the girls’ mother. Each chapter has a different narrator by the way, like Canterbury Tales. Anyway, in Heather’s chapter, she talks about giving birth to Lavender. During the writing of the book, my wife gave birth to my two children, who are close in age. Both times I had to rewrite that chapter.
RJ: It’s nice to have a rich world to draw upon. You have quite a few characters in Ancient Canada; share with us a bit about your character development process.
CJ: It was funny when I found out, after the book was already done, that I had based Marigold on Oscar Wilde. Her humor at least. I had heard of him of course, but I didn’t know much about him until after I had written Ancient Canada. So to answer your question, that’s how I do it. (Huh?) To give a real answer, I don’t base any characters on friends or family members. I definitely drew the line there. Names maybe, but not personalities. Since I was writing mythology, I thought most about what they’re going to be dealing with and what tools they will have to do so. Agrippin acts the way he acts because he’s in love with Lavender, can read dreams, and needs to defect from Siberia. Polaris acts the way he acts because he needs to protect his country, has an army at his fingertips, and knows a bunch of stuff we don’t know until later. Defining characters by their controversy and resources I thought made good mythological sense. Along those lines, since they’re mythological characters, they speak within the writing style of the book. For some readers, it’s very immersive and they love it. But I like to give fair warning here because a certain percentage of readers prefer wide variations in how different characters speak. I don’t have a character from Brooklyn or one from New Orleans, so I couldn’t do much there, and I didn’t want to interrupt the (hopefully) immersive style.
RJ: Do you have any advice for other writers?
CJ: If you think writing is hard, finding a publisher makes it look easy. If you think finding a publisher is hard, marketing makes it look easy. That’s not very encouraging, and it’s not really advice. Seriously though, marketing is about as much fun as putting on a cold, wet bathing suit. This is fun; I love doing interviews. But finding advertising is expensive. Finding reviewers isn’t always easy, because there are a lot of books published every day. As for actual advice, think about your marketing before you begin writing. If you care how many copies you sell, you’ll need to write something more commercial-friendly. If you care more about the work itself than sales, you’ll be writing differently from the beginning.
RJ: Anything special you’d like to say to readers?
CJ: Check out my wesbite, ancientcanada.com, which has links to everything (map, sample chapter, where to buy it, etc.) Also, you could read Ancient Canada without ever seeing the word ‘glacier.’ ‘Snow’ and ‘ice’ are rarely mentioned. For some reason beyond me, readers rarely question that when reading a book called Ancient Canada. Along that thought, go online and check out the ‘seed bank’ or ‘seed vault’ on Svalbard for more background when you get to Prince Oslo’s chapter.
RJ: What are you working on now?
CJ: I’ve got 200+ pages of notes for future stories from the world of Ancient Canada, but like most writers I have 1,001 ideas that’ll never get written. Maybe that will be the second book I write; 1,001 Ideas For a Book. For now, I’m putting on the cold, wet bathing suit.
RJ: haha. Readers! Stop by tomorrow for an excerpt and giveaway.

However, the vaccine is located in a secure underground facility five hundred miles away.
To retrieve it, Robson leads a raiding party of humans and vampires down the East Coast, which has been devastated by the outbreak and overrun by zombies and rape gangs. The Michaluk Virus is loose.
In the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, the Michaluk Virus has escaped the CDC, and its effects are widespread and devastating. Most of the population of the southeastern United States has become homicidal cannibals. As society rapidly crumbles under the hordes of infected, three people—Ethan Bennett, a Memphis police officer; Cade Alton, his best friend and former IDF sharpshooter; and Brandt Evans, a lieutenant in the US Marines—band together against the oncoming crush of death and terror sweeping across the world.
As Cade, Brandt, and Ethan hole up in a safe house in Tupelo, others begin to join them in their bid for survival. When the infected attack and they’re forced to flee, one departs to Memphis in search of answers while the others escape south to Biloxi, where they encounter more danger than they bargained for. Who Art Thou Thursday? Chris Semal

After reading the blurb for Trial of Tears, I went on a Pulp Fiction YouTube Spree. I lost hours of my life on “Say what again,” “I gotta stab her three times?” and Ezekiel 25:17. Today, Chris Semal joins us so we can pluck his brain. But first, the blurb which sucked me in.
‘Pulp Fiction’ meets ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ in this tough, funny, sexy and fast-paced story.
Pete Watts is a former undercover narcotics cop who got way too close to his job. He now runs a music rehearsal studio in which all manner of eccentric musicians come through. His soon to be ex-girlfriend is a talented singer with a sleazy manager who is in the habit of giving his clients drug habits, occasionally overdosing them to move their recordings up the charts, with the full support of the shady entertainment company for whom he works.
This universe of people is inexorably drawn into a war between two violent drug gangs, viewed through the perspective of the Napoleonic leader of one gang. He has recently signed on a strange, but beautiful ex-mercenary, who wears makeup in the form of multi-colored tears running down her face. These tears are, in fact, decals on which different poisons are concealed, hence the title. Some survive the Trial of Tears, some don’t. The story’s taut climax is set in a posh townhouse in which only the courageous will emerge unscathed.
While it certainly has its share of humor, action and suspense, it is also a story of friendship and redemption, as well as being a love letter to New York City.
Available at Barnes & Nobles || The Book Depository
Reena Jacobs: Musician, singer, songwriter. Do you find your background in music has helped you as a writer? And if so, how?
Chris Semal: Absolutely, Music has always been my first love and is a constant source of discussion with my friends, who mostly are musicians themselves. It’s an innate form of communication and you can express pretty much every emotion by how and what you play. I’m usually the lyricist in whatever original bands I’ve played in and most of the songs are character driven, that is to say, they are sung from other perspectives than my own personal one. Someone once told me that to be the singer in my band, you need to be a method actor. This is a huge help in writing a novel, as you have to put yourself in the heads and personalities of many different characters and make them all believable. I’m probably a precious few steps away from having multiple personality disorder
Also, writing about something I know so innately helps in conveying the joy that playing with other musicians provides. I think I’ve translated that feeling well in the chapters and scenes which focus on that element, as well as the coldness and calculation on the business end.
RJ: I find music highly inspirational. However, it distracts me like nothing else when I’m trying to produce. What about you? Did you have a playlist while writing Trial of Tears?
CS: I always write with iTunes on in the background, but no particular playlist. I have some 9500 songs and just let it run on random play like a jukebox. I may tweak things a little and forward a song if it’s not the right mood for where I’m at, but I usually just let it run. When you’re in a Guns N’ Roses mood and Miles Davis shows up, you’ve got to take charge of the moment, though sometimes it’ll take you somewhere unexpected.
RJ: Guns N’ Roses… you bring memories of my youth to me. Give us a brief description of a story you have hidden in your skeleton closet? And will it ever see the light of day?
CS: With any luck, most of my stories will see the light of day. At this point, I’m not the most prolific producer, though I see my pace picking up the more I write. The next work to see publication is a novella called ‘Time Flies’. It’s a coming of age story set in Manhattan in the late 1980s through the aftermath of 9/11. As a native, I love setting my stories in the city. I wrote this as a bit of a reaction to people who commented that Trial of Tears is a little intense or over the top for their tastes. I look at it as if Ozzy Osbourne played a bar mitzvah. That’s not to say that I don’t let humor into the story, but it’s on a different level.
RJ: I like that viewpoint. I think sometimes it’s easy for novels written by an author to fall into the sameness. Versatility keeps things fresh. What are you working on now?
CS: I am currently working on the sequel to Trial of Tears, titled Reign of Tears. It picks up the story a year later. I’m about seven chapters into it and hopefully will have it done in 2013.
RJ: Awesome! Readers will have something to look forward to. Which of your characters do you relate to most?
CS: Ah, I relate to most of them in one way or another. The relationship between the protagonist, Pete Watts, and his closest friend is based on the way my oldest friend and I get along. Pete’s a nice fellow who, though he’s had a tough life, is the kind of guy you’d like to hang out and have a beer with. That being said, I really had the most fun writing for the villains, of which there are many. You can let loose the worst elements of your psyche without fear of incarceration or recrimination. I wanted to make my bad guys truly hissable, but with an element of humanity that keeps them grounded. They chose the paths they took for a reason.
*Spoiler Alert*
I was seriously bummed out when I had to kill off Ronno towards the end of the story. As despicable as he was, he grew on me and I gave him tons of good lines. Alice, the inspiration for the novel’s title and cover, was an absolute gem to write for, broken toy that she is. She wasn’t even in my initial character sketches when I started outlining the story! From some deep, dark recess in my mind, she makes her entrance in Chapter 5 and does her best to take over the story. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from readers who want to know more about her and that will happen in Reign of Tears. In this book, I treat her like the monster of a well-done horror movie. You don’t want to show too much and overexpose her, so I focus more on the wreckage she leaves behind. I recently had a fun publicity assignment in which I wrote a character interview with her. It ends very badly for the interviewer.
*End Spoiler*
RJ: Do you have any advice for other writers?
CS: There are many things, but a lot of them are subjective and what works for one person might ruin someone else’s work. If I had to give the younger version of me advice, it would be to realize how much polishing an initial manuscript needs. It’s normal to think that you’ve written something tremendous after you’ve completed a novel and you may confuse the completion of a major milestone, which finishing a first novel certainly is, with how far you are along the road to being publishable. Without a doubt, once you have it polished til it gleams, hire an editor. You can only go so far by yourself. No one has an ugly baby, but a professional perspective will show you what is working and what needs work. If you have to go down the road of self-publishing, figure out what your business strengths and weaknesses are, because you’re going to need to put a good team together. So many different skills are required and it’s unlikely you’ll be good at all of them.
RJ: Excellent advice. Anything special you’d like to say to readers?
CS: I always enjoy getting feedback on my work, good or bad. This a labor of love and I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy the process. It’s one of the best mental exercises you can put yourself through and, even if you don’t wind up on the bestseller list, all sorts of doors will open up to you if you take a journey like this.
About the Author
Chris Semal was born in New York City in 1959 and has lived there all his life. He is aware that other places exist and likes to visit them from time to time, but the city is a hard mistress to resist and he keeps going back to her. A musician, singer and songwriter, he has played pretty much every rock club in Manhattan at one time or another since the late 70s and went to school at the University of Miami to study Music Engineering, coming back north to do the only obvious thing possible, becoming a municipal bond broker and eventually working as a consultant building financial models. In the early part of the millennium, between both consulting and band gigs, he thought it might be interesting to see what would happen if he expanded on the 80 or so words he used in writing song lyrics and went for the 80,000 he would need for a novel. And so Trial Of Tears was born, along with a passion for developing plots and characters.

Second Time Around Blog Tour

Yes, I like frosting on my men. Don’t be shy… I know you do too. Welcome to the next stop on the Second Time Around blog tour!
Jamie lives with his straight modeling best friend of three years, John. He’s finally achieved his life long dream of opening up his own bakery and John throws him a party. There he meets Matthew, co-owner of the Home Improvement shop across the street from his new bakery. They hit it off.
Only there’s one problem. Matthew is possibly straight and theres a 90% chance that he thinks Jamie is a woman!

Excerpt
“Who was that guy I saw you talking to? He looks a bit familiar.” John’s voice was casual but the quick glances out of the corner of his eyes were anything but.
Resisting the urge to laugh, Jamie looked back out the passenger side window.
“Matthew. Him and his brother run the Home Improvement store across the street. Didn’t you invite him?”
“Oh, yeah. He seemed nice, but I could’ve sworn his name was Clark.” John sounded confused.
“Maybe you mixed up their names?” Jamie provided helpfully.
“More than likely. We only talked for about a minute.” Jamie caught the quick glance John tossed him and so he wasn’t surprised by his next words. “Sooo… does he know you’re a guy?”
Even expecting it, Jamie couldn’t have stopped himself that time, even though he tried. He burst out laughing, slapping his palm repeatedly against his naked thigh.
He knew John was serious and, in all fairness, the question really was a legit one. Still, he couldn’t help it.
“Stop laughing.” John muttered, trying not to chuckle himself as Jamie continued to laugh, a tear squeezing out the corner of his eye.
Trying to breath deeply and get himself under control, Jamie giggled. “Sorry, sorry.” he apologised when he could open his mouth without laughing.
John shook his head, the corner of his mouth tilting up in a small smile.
“So does he?”
He bit his lip. The more he thought about it, the more he was certain Matthew had no idea he was a guy.
Which meant the man was straight. And he’d only flirted with Jamie because he’d thought he was a girl.
Crap!
He heard a sigh beside him. “He doesn’t know, does he?”
Jamie shook his head in the negative. “I don’t think so.”
“Crap.”
Slumping down in his seat and crossing his arms over his chest, Jamie let his head thump against the window pane, deciding that was exactly what he felt like.

Chasing Shadows – Making Amends (7)

Welcome to installment #7 of the Chasing Shadows – Making Amends series. For more information or to read the previous scene, head to this page.
Chapter 3
Scene 2
Hunger drove Kecil from her hut. Though fruits and vegetables filled her home, fresh meat kept the tiger in her strong.
Teman had long since left, preferring the sanctuary of the trees to the enclosure of walls. No need to worry about his whereabouts. Never one to travel too far, he’d catch up when ready.
Kecil made her way to the outskirts of the village but paused at the sound of Gemuk’s voice. She ducked behind the nearest bamboo shelter. With his most recent threat, she could only hope he had not seen her.
“How far?” Gemuk asked.
“Five days south of here at most.”
Kecil recognized the voice of Kasut.
Good that he’d returned. Though his mate was as cruel as any, she was the sole cub-bearing wehr-tigress in the clan. With fertility so highly valued, Kecil couldn’t bring herself to harbor ill will against Kasut’s mate.
A long pause followed, and Kecil forced herself not to peek around the corner. Leave before you’re caught, she told herself, but the hope of learning about more females kept her in place.
“And you’re sure?” Gemuk broke the silence. “He was the same one who killed Setia’s mate?”
Kecil’s heart missed a beat at the mention of her mother and father.
“Positive. A little older but still the same face.”
The jungle rippled as if underwater. Despite the dense foliage hiding much of the sun, the world became too bright and threatened to topple Kecil with sensory overload. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t hear with the thunder in her ears. She slid to the ground and blinked, trying to force meaning back into her world.
They found my mother’s killer. She repeated the statement again and again, letting it take form on her lips though she made no sound. Eventually, the forest stabilized, allowing Gemuk’s voice to filter through the fading roar.
“And he defeated Tebal?”
“No,” Kasut said. “There was another—a dark one.”
“A dark one?”
“He had black fur. A shadow cat, but he looked… foreign.”
Silence stretched until it was unbearable. Just as Kecil was about to lean forward, Gemuk spoke. “It doesn’t matter. We need to find him. Now that we have a lead, we can track down the murderer and eliminate him once and for all.”
“How are we going to do that?” Kasut asked. “We were already spread thin even before we lost Tebal. And Setia will never leave his daughter.”
“Forget Setia and his runt. The two of us will go.”
“I’m tired of searching for this and that. I’ve been away from my mate long enough.”
A dull thud accompanied Kasut’s grunt with the scrape of scattering rocks following.
“If you want to keep your mate safe, I suggest you take care of this matter first.” Rage deepened Gemuk’s voice as the tiger rose to the surface. “Get up. We leave tomorrow. Whatever time you want with your mate, you better get it now.”
Kecil drew her legs close to her body and flattened herself against the hut at the approaching footsteps.
Kasut walked past. Though his head was bowed, she didn’t miss his bleeding lip, nor the look of defeat mingled with anger.
With no mate or cubs, nothing prevented Gemuk from abandoning the clan to the dangers lurking in the rainforest. But Kasut had everything to lose… even more so with a daughter only three years old—the only cub in the clan to survive beyond two summers in the last six years.
Kecil understood the reservation of a parent, but she had none. Her mother’s murderer remained unpunished. Kecil lived a life of heartache and guilt as she watched her father fade a little everyday.
With each passing year, his chance to find a new mate lessened. Meanwhile his false sense of obligation forced him to stay with a dying clan and protect an unworthy daughter.
Small but resourceful, Kecil was determined to bring her mother’s killer to justice. Perhaps then both she and her father could find peace.

Hello,
I’ve very happy to be here and really excited to meet all of you. My name is D.N. Simmons and I love to write about sexy, dangerous and powerful beings. My series that’s available now is called the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles and it features vampires and shifters living openly with humans. With each new book, the characters evolve as well as their relationships. Also, there’s not a second where there isn’t something going on. The KOTDC is riveting, dark, sexy and bold. I really wanted to give readers something new and exciting to delve into in the urban-fantasy/paranormal romance genre.
What can I say? I love to entertain. As a token of my gratitude to you for hosting this wonderful blog tour, I’d love to give away five free digital copies of my novel, “Desires Unleashed: Knights of the Darkness Chronicles”. It’s the book you can sink your teeth into (pun intended) that kick-starts the adventure.
Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Salt City Blog Tour + Giveaway

Welcome. Today we have the author of Salt City, Robert C. Fleet, here to share a bit about himself and his works. I don’t know about you, but I love delving into the mind of an author.
Syracuse, upstate New York. The “Salt City.” An apartment building on the edge of The Projects – and Anne Malloy dies, thrown out of a sixth floor window, an apparent suicide, while Mark Cornell watches. Mark was there for a purpose, his part-time gig being to snap incriminating photos for a divorce lawyer who happily takes cases over the phone. Watching the apartment was Mark’s assignment.
But this assignment has a problem: Mark learns that “Anne Malloy” had died months before, leaving behind a grieving husband. So who is this woman?
It’s 1976, before cellphones, internet, and all the easy ways of satisfying curiosities, so Mark Cornell’s search for a name to give the victim makes him a foot soldier slogging personally through the facts. And, as those facts pile up, Mark discovers that he really shouldn’t be playing detective, stumbling across the thin line between commerce and crime.
Available at Barnes & Nobles || The Book Depository || Amazon
Reena Jacobs: The cover art is rather unusual. I’ve stared at it so long, the image is imprinted in my eyes. What is the concept behind it, and how much direction did you have in its development?
Robert C. Fleet: The concept behind Salt City’s cover art is a vision of the first victim, red-headed Anne Malloy, as she lies on the sidewalk after her six-story fall. It’s the image that sticks in the detective’s mind from page two and drives him to the very end of the story.
The publisher spent a lot of time designing the cover art, ranging from very literal to very abstract, before arriving at this photograph transformed into something suggestive.
I wish I could take some credit for it, but my graphic arts abilities are very poor. I did have right of final approval, though, and saw the options as it was being developed.
RJ: I love it. As I said, I spent quite a bit of time just looking at it. What’s your favorite part about the publishing process and why? (consider the initial book concept all the way through marketing, and beyond)
RCF: I don’t have a favorite part of the publishing process – beyond writing the book, of course. I get very shy about my work once it’s completed, so it’s hard for me to push it in terms of marketing. I have gotten better over the years, however, and I’ve always enjoyed engaging readers in conversation.
The writing part of the process is both my favorite and least favorite part of it all. The initial concept is always like an itch or a snatch of song that you can’t get out of your head. Once it’s rubbed my imagination raw and I have no choice but to write it, then the fun starts, because I get to become part of a dozen or so lives — and I never really know how a book will end until I am in the final stretch.
FYI: Salt City is my fourth published book: I have three more completed and five that I have never been able to get past page 80. I’ve been lucky enough to have six feature screenplays produced, though, and two full-length plays – but you don’t want to see my shelf of unrealized dreams, written but not realized on screen or stage.
RJ: Wow! You’ve been busy. With hindsight being 20/20, is there anything you would have changed with your publishing journey?
RCF: I would have pushed hard to get Salt City published first, instead of my two fantasy/magic realism novels, Last Mountain and White Horse, Dark Dragon.
As you know from the book’s prologue, the original manuscript had some bad luck with East European censors during the bad ol’ Cold War days – I was living there when I wrote Salt City, trying to get married to the love of my life, who is Polish. (We did/still are.) So I started writing the other books in totally different genres just to get the bad taste out of my mouth. It was only when I finally recovered the manuscript and re-read it years later that I realized that I liked Salt City a lot and should have kept fighting for it from the beginning.
RJ: It’s amazon the way life’s events shape us and push us in certain directions. It’s wonderful Salt City wasn’t lost for ever. I spent some time on your website, and I am absolutely OVERWHELMED with your experience. Writer, Director, Producer, Artist… Share with us the pivotal moment when you realized performing arts was the road for you?
RCF: First moment: When I drilled a football at an assistant coach’s head when he made fun of me for liking anything other than killing my own teammates to get a spot on that weekend’s varsity line-up. Ostracized by the sports crowd, I discovered theater and a great girlfriend within two weeks and never looked back.
But . . . It’s one thing to enjoy high school arts – theater & writing (I’d been writing since I was – it’s another thing to plan a life, what with parents’ expectations, a “real world” out there, and the luck of having other skills. So, once the college days started, I dropped out of theater classes in week 1 and concentrated on the academics.
Or thought I would. Instead I started doing plays without college credits, working with grad students a lot, lucky enough to work with several more experienced writers in developing their visions and soon enough starting to write my own. But still I was taking a full load of academics and nothing officially in the arts, performing or otherwise. So, the pivotal moment became…
My 20th birthday. A sleet-driven December day in upstate New York – on a street corner near the Syracuse University campus – that’s when and where I made my decision to commit to the creative arts, performing arts being the main one at the time.
I had always been a good student, and I was at S.U. on a fairly substantial academic scholarship. That was easy and safe. Acting and writing (playwriting at that time) were hard, unsafe. Difficult. I was always afraid of failing. And, wow!, did I flop a couple of times. Still do. But I was becoming more and more addicted, spending more and more time on theater courses and rehearsals.
That cold grey wet day, feeling incredibly lonely ’cause I was away from my family for my birthday, feeling like becoming 20 should mean something, I suddenly realized that I wanted to take the chances, that I was honestly happy when trying to do something creative.
It’s still scary, though.
RJ: Safe is easy. It takes a lot of courage to put oneself on the line. Congratulations on taking a chance on yourself and dedicating yourself to a work you’re passionate about. What are you working on now?
RCF: I’m helping promo an indie feature, PLAYER. I wrote the screenplay and ended up acting a main role (it was written for someone else who was suddenly unavailable). In May it is at the Cannes Film Festival, hopefully being sold to U.S. & international markets. I’ve been working with the marketing and PR people, but it’s an indie, so the budget is lunch money compared to the mega-movies out there.
On the book side, I’m updating Last Mountain and White Horse, Dark Dragon for a new edition and ebook publication. Both are fine as is, but the original publisher (Ace Books for Putnam/ Berkley) changed length requirements after they were delivered and I had to cut out 10,000 words at the last moment. I lost some interesting story moments. Now, with a new publisher, Red Frog Publishing, and a digital version, I have to go through the manuscript anyway, so why not?
It’s a very interesting, somewhat odd experience going back to something written 20 years ago. Don’t think I could write those same books today. The challenge is to update them without betraying their original qualities.
RJ: Sounds like a full plate. Do you have any advice for other writers?
RCF: Write what you want to write first. Don’t try to put everything you ever wanted to say into the same story. Don’t try to guess what others say will sell.
Then, once you’ve written what you want to write, look at what people are reading and see how you can give them something to read. Believe it or not, you can write from the heart and for a wider public, too.
RJ: Anything special you’d like to say to readers?
RCF: Enjoy. Salt City was meant to entertain lovers of mysteries and style. Yes, there are levels of meaning in it, but the first job for this book was to create an enjoyable read with perhaps a little resonance to the story.
Oh, and the chapters are short in honor of my Dad: he always read in bed and would complain about falling asleep before he could ever finish a chapter. He’s dead now, but he would have felt like he was flying through Salt City.

The Binding Blog Tour

Welcome one and all! It looks like we’re coming to the end of The Binding Blog Tour, and we have a special treat. It’s been forever since I’ve had an author post which fits along the Authors Helping Authors line. Today, Author L. Filloon shares some excellent tips on publishing.
Two nights after her eighteenth birthday, Lily is attacked while out jogging, but is saved by Tharin Lunar, a Sidhe prince. When she discovers that her attacker is her own brother, Lucas, who disappeared four years ago, Lily refuses to believe that her brother would truly hurt her and becomes determined to find Lucas and bring him home. Lily finds that Lucas’ disappearance is somehow tied to Tharin; so when he informs her that she is his betrothed and must return with him to Velesi, fulfill a treaty between their families and unite the two strongest clans through their marriage, Lily agrees. However, she is not going to Velesi for a wedding, but to bring home her only family, Lucas.
On their journey to the borders of Velesi, the realm of the Thirteen Clans, they are pursued by a Sidhe assassin group call the Ange, meet with an ogre crime lord that ends badly, deal with a sleazy troll motel manager, and when they discover that there is a bounty on their heads, they must keep one step ahead of every assassin, bounty hunter and low-life criminal from Velesi.
Protecting Lily has become the biggest challenge of Tharin’s life. Lucky for him he has help in the form of his twin brother, Tolan, Lily’s best friend Julia and his three bodyguard cousins.

And now a few words from L. Filloon!
When I was writing The Binding, like many new authors, visions of literary agents breaking down my door tagged along as I worked to complete my first book. How crushed were those dreams when after sending out sixty-five, that’s right, sixty-five query letters to both large and small agencies, only to be rejected…from all of them. Granted, with the exception of one, they were all very polite about their decision to decline. Many were form letters, a few were short and personal ones with some encouraging words, and even less were those who offered a short review and suggestions along with more encouraging words to ‘keep on writing’.
The task of continuing to send out samples of my manuscript to agencies, and eventually directly to publishers, was daunting. I was ready to throw in the towel. Then one day, out of the blue, an article came by my desk about an indie author by the name of Darcie Chan. In it she tells of going the conventional route as I did, but to no avail (I believe she sent out just as many query letters). Then she read about self-publishing through Amazon-Kindle.com. Within the year, her book that no agent or publisher wanted sold over 250,000 copies as an eBook through Amazon-Kindle.com.
With new hope, I decided to go the route of the self-published indie author and connected with Amazon-Kindle.com. There was no live person to deal with just a registration on their site, a few questions to answer, a download of your work, press ‘OK’ and your book is made available to millions. That’s the easy part.
Without the guidance of an agent you are just one more unknown author trying to swim your way through a sea of unknown authors all trying to get their book to be seen. Amazon-Kindle gives you a temporary cover for your book until you are able to download your own. Without an amazing-awesome-eye catching cover, your book can go unseen for centuries to come until some poor, bored, future human-android just happens to be dusting off a relic of a computer, comes across your book and even then just reads the cover, loses interest and puts it aside unread. The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” doesn’t apply in the literary world. Be sure to get your cover ready before you put your book out there.
Another reason an agent or publisher may be good to have is the dreaded editing. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve gone over your manuscript, there is always one (or twenty) typo, one grammatical error, a misuse of tenses, and so on. Even best sellers that have gone through traditional publishers have come through with an error or two. You can ask your Drama teacher (as I did) to help edit, you can ask your best friend who insists that she can do the edits, you can even ask your sister who although she has your back, rolls her eyes because it is another story that you’ve written that she’s read over the 40-something years she’s known you. You can even ask another author or blogger to give it a try, it doesn’t matter. Unless you have a group of professional editors who specialize in editing, you will find that your work will be criticized not for the storyline, not for the characters or their development, but for the lack of editing. Trust me on this one…after a few of these criticisms you start saving your pennies to hire a professional editor for your current and future work. They are not cheap.
The marketing part was trial and error for me. When you self-publish you are your own marketing director, sales director, publisher, social media guru and publicist (thankfully, I was able to connect later with a great indie author publicist, Stormi Johnson http://lightningbookpromotions.com). You start by visiting every site that has to do with authors and how they can get your book “out there” to the millions of readers just waiting for to grab hold of your book. You sign up with networking groups with other authors who ask “if you like my book, I’ll like yours”. There is the Twitter and FaceBook, Wattpad, Blogger, WordPress, and LinkedIn to name a few. Then there are the sites to help sell your work such as Smashword, Barnes & Nobles, Readstreet, BookDaily and, of course, Amazon. Plus a few other dozen or so sites all geared to help you sell your book. The only problem with this is that most of your connections are with other authors, of ALL genres. And, unless you have actual readers, your book is going no where.
I was fortunate. As mentioned above, I met Stormi Johnson. Although I continued to market on my own, Stormi works at getting my book read by bloggers who review books with large followings. Before I knew it she hooked me up with interviews, reviews, being a guest blogger, and my favorite, character interviews. She was able to connect with reviewers who were interested in my genre and would give the book a fair, unbiased review. She connected me with a cover designer who charged a reasonable fee to design the current cover for The Binding, which actually helped with sales. Before I knew it, the reviews were coming in. Decent reviews that caught the interest of readers of my genre and my sales increased.
If you can make that connection with someone who is familiar with the self-publishing world, do it. It makes a big difference in getting your work noticed.
In the recent months I have received decent reviews on Amazon, Smashwords and Goodreads. With the constant exposure through these sites and those I’ve mentioned above, my following grows everyday. I’ve learn much in the past several months in regards to self-publishing. While currently writing the follow-up to The Binding, would I self-published again? Armed with my new found knowledge of the self-publishing world and with the support of family, friends, my publicist and a professional editor…yes, yes I would.

Excerpt
His tongue licked gently across her lips and she sighed, leaning into him, allowing him access. She threw caution to the wind and went with it, her tongue met his tentatively. Like she did, he tasted of wine and beer. Warnings bounced around in her head, telling her this was not supposed to be happening. But she was sick of being uptight. Tired of always doing just the right thing, constantly worrying about what would happen if…
With her arms to her side, Casey pulled her to him. One hand going to her waist, the other lifted and his big hand cupped the side of her face tenderly. Her arms lifted and her hands came to rest on his shoulders. She had to do it now. Push away or she wouldn’t be able to. She fought with her emotions while his tongue fought to go deeper into her mouth.
She relented, giving in to the heat of the moment. Her hands snaked up around his neck, the other into his soft hair. She pulled him closer and kissed him back.
She heard Rosa giggle but was too engrossed in the lips and tongue devouring her to pay any real attention. Paige heard the rustle of clothing and thought vaguely that Rosa was allowing Tadd to remove her shirt. She had never done anything like this before, not with another couple in the room. The thought terrified her, yet it also turned her on even more. Groaning, she deepened the kiss and pressed herself against Casey’s muscular chest. It felt good to be held in strong arms.
The room was hot; the windows were open to let in the evening air. The fans circulating thick humid air did nothing to cool the heat of bodies in the room. The military base didn’t have air conditioning in any of the buildings accept for commanders quarters and offices. The barracks and lodging buildings were supplied with oscillating fans. But none of that mattered. Paige wanted to feel him holding her, his skin touching her, him inside of her. She broke the kiss and buried her face in Casey’s shoulder, trying to catch her breath and make sense of what she was doing.
When she looked up, Rosa and Tadd were going at it hot and heavy on the couch. His pants were unbuttoned and pulled down far enough that Paige could see the top of his ass cheeks. Hips rocked back and forth against Rosa while she ground against him.
Casey saw her look over and he glanced too then gave her a lopsided grin. He slowly leaned forward, giving her time to either move away or meet him half way.
Oh, what the hell, she met him half way and this time, the kiss was slower. His tongue delved into her mouth and licked at her in slow sensual moves that had her wanting to straddle him like Rosa had straddled Tadd. The rustle of clothing sounded again.
Paige heard Rosa and Tadd getting up from the couch.
Rosa met her eyes over Tadd’s shoulder and winked. Turning around, her back to Tadd, she grabbed his hands and placed them on her breasts. He was eager to oblige and began to massage her bared perky mounds, pinching at her dark rose colored erect nipples.
