The Importance of Not Censoring Cee Lo When He Sings "Fuck You"

(A downloadable version of this is available on my scribd feed)

Censorship is and always has been a concern. What we can allow in film, television, music, print, and other media is always something that is negotiated by social norms and mores, values, and usually what we would be willing to expose others to. There are some things, I believe, which will always be wrong and taboo (snuff, child pornography, other similar things) and then there are other things which are commonly available but...

The Hundreds! Call for Submissions: 100 Word Love Stories

All our hundred years of art and lit are merely degrees of elaborations on declarations of Love.

What more is there to say? This is a call for Love. This is a call for a hundred more, of

a hundred strokes and a hundred words, from a hundred people for a hundred more.

This is a call – send works of a hundred words or whole-page strips or one-panel gags on

that perpetually pervasive pandemic, either as RTFs or JPGs both in Filipino or in English

to 100loves100@gmail.com, subject heading "I LOVE...

127 Hours

Let's get the preliminary concerns out of the way. 127 Hours is not for the squeamish, the faint of heart, or for those who can't stand James Franco for extended periods of time. Franco, in all his Franco-ness, carries this film onscreen. The rest of the heavy lifting come from the minimalist and thankfully restrained script and the masterful directing. Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle, who co-wrote the script for this, were also the creative team behind Slumdog Millionaire. And with Boyle's...

Retro Reviews: Universal Soldier

One of the original intentions of Retro Reviews was to get a chance to return to and reassess movies that I had seen previously. It was the opportunity to apply a more learned (at least I hope) eye to things. In that sense, it's a project that plays with memory and nostalgia, bringing me back to films that I had seen in my youth, uneducated, raw, and nearly devoid of aesthetics, except for those instincts and the immediate impact of what I knew. So here we are with Universal Soldier.

It is...

Building a Better World

This is going to be a more personal entry than all I've written so far, and this is because there is no other way to deal with some things that are in my head right now. read on brave reader.

A good friend from high school, and someone I mention in my second book, Venson Evangelista was brutally murdered a few days ago. As too many people have observed correctly, what was done to him was cruel and savage and hateful. It was a fate no one deserved, let alone a stand-up, truly good at heart guy ...
