How do you put a price tag on the priceless?
Independent think tank, the Centre for Policy Development will release a report today that aims to actually put a dollar value on the services the proposed marine parks would do for the environment.
Centre for Policy Development executive director Miriam Lyons says they’ve found in the long term the marine parks will be a big win for the environment and fishermen.

CPD’s Executive Director Miriam Lyons was interviewed for a short piece by Sophie Morris in the Australian Financial Review, 28 June. The article discusses the Australian Marine Alliance’s appeal to the opposition for “something more substantial and clearer” on the proposed Marine Reserves Network. The Coalition fisheris spokesman Richard Colbeck said that they, “don’t believe you need to lock up huge swaths of ocean.”
The article concludes with a reference to the CPD report Preserving our marine wealth, which was released on 27 June and found that the proposed marine parks will protect $1.2 billion in ecosystem services.

Dr James Whelan, Research Director for CPD’s Public Service program, asked interviewees from his recent report, Big Society and Australia to provide short comments in response to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s recent ‘landmark’ speech.
Last month, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott unveiled the second instalment of his “Plan for Stronger Communities”. Extending the policy directions he prefaced at the National Press Club in January, Abbott outlined several Coalition policies that aim to strengthen social capital and social fabric, empower citizens through personal and mutual responsibility to “achieve something for themselves”.

Miriam Lyons was interviewed by Waleed Aly about the “pros and cons of offshore processing”. Miriam drew on research by John Menadue AO, Kate Gauthier and Arja Keski-Nummi for the 2011 report, A New Approach.
While federal politicians work to broker a political solution to the offshore asylum seeker policy impasse, some are questioning whether the Government’s preference is the best solution to keeping people off dangerous boats.

CPD Fellow John Menadue AO was interviewed for a piece on The Wire radio news program on 25 June, alongside NSW Co-convenor of Labor for Refugees Linda Scott.
The story investigated the ‘compromise’ deal represented by offshore processing for asylum seekers, why no agreement has been reached and whose interests stand in the way of urgent action.
