TDSA conference presentation | 24 July 2013

ChristopherStoneTDSANFPs: Survive or Perish
What’s driving your future?

CPD’s public service research director Christopher Stone was a keynote speaker at the Transport Development & Solutions Alliance’s (TDSA) biennial conference earlier this year.

The not for profit (NFP) sector is a major part of a healthy society alongside the public and private sectors. TDSA’s focus on ‘Driving Governance’ in 2013 seeks to stimulate its membership, readership and conference attendees to gain more knowledge and skills to be better able to drive their future rather than being driven.

So long, and thanks for all the great ideas!

Miriam on The NationI have one of the best jobs in the country. I get to work with smart, dedicated, talented people to help make progressive ideas matter. It’s a privilege I’ve treasured since the Centre for Policy Development began over six years ago, and I’m about to leave it behind: I’m heading to Europe at the start of next year to take a long sabbatical and hang out with my lovely and very patient partner, who’s currently studying in Zürich. So, one of the best jobs in the country is now up for grabs.

I’m very excited about CPD’s plans and potential for the future, and proud of what we’ve done so far – the organisation is in great shape, with a great team, and I’m looking forward to staying involved as one of our many Fellows after I depart at the end of the year.

If you’d like to see a more hopeful vision for Australia and a more generous view of human nature reflected in public debates and public policy, if you love to work with smart people to dive into the evidence of what works and tell others of what you’ve learned, if you’re frustrated by the disconnect between ‘political reality’ and ‘reality reality’, if you dance with glee when you’ve successfully raised funds for a great project, if you’re sick of throwing things at the TV and would like to be a voice for great ideas, hard evidence and progressive thinking, then this is the job for you.

I’m so grateful to all of you who have supported CPD with your time, ideas, advice, energy, and donations during the last six years – you make what we do possible, and I hope you’ll continue your support over the coming years.

Applications close on October 18. If you think you might know the Centre for Policy Development’s next CEO, or you’d like to apply yourself, please head to http://cpd.org.au/2013/09/recruiting-new-cpd-chief-executive-officer/

Many thanks,

Miriam Lyons.

Pushing our luck book mockupTony Abbott’s contempt for climate science:
IPCC report ‘most scrutinised document in the history of science’

The latest climate change report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has resulted in climate experts being more certain than ever before that humans are responsible for global warming. Temperatures are increasing and short periods of slower warming do not reflect any long-term trends. Despite this Australia appears to have elected a “climate denial government” that has begun an assault on climate change infrastructure.

As observed in this article by senior columnist for The Age Kenneth Davidson, CPD’s new book Pushing our luck contains a chapter ‘Climate change: reconnecting politics with reality’ by John Wiseman of University of Melbourne. John discusses how Australia could be leading the way in reducing carbon emissions rather than lagging behind other nations.

“The Centre for Policy Development notes there is bipartisan agreement between Britain’s Conservative-led coalition government and the Labour opposition that global warming is both a serious challenge (Britain is committed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, from 1990 levels, of 34 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050) and a major economic opportunity. (Prime Minister David Cameron said this year that: ”It is the countries that prioritise green energy that will secure the biggest share of the jobs and growth in a low carbon sector set to be worth $4 trillion by 2015.”)”

Sky news The Nation | 19 September 2013

Miriam Lyons on The Nation Gender, jobs and refugees

CPD executive director Miriam Lyons joined Ross Cameron, Andrew Leigh and Alan Tudge with host David Speers on Sky News The Nation. On the heels of the election they discussed the lack of women in the new federal ministry, job cuts in public service and asylum seeker policy.

“What concerns me is that this is operation sovereign borders not operation humanitarian intervention, the idea that this is ultimately a border security issue rather than a humanitarian issue…the long-term way of dealing with that is through regional coordination and cooperation”

Short-term thinking cannot address Australia’s long-term dilemmas – Help us look further ahead!
