Emperor of the Eight Islands...

parsleysagerosemarytimemachine:
Emperor of the Eight Islands was a really interesting book; I’d been hearing good things about Lian Hearn’s writing for ages, so I was happy to have a chance to pick this up. The story had a strongly dream-like feel for me, perhaps because of the way it styles itself after legends and cultural stories, and so has a very unmeasured sense of time, sometimes racing, sometimes pausing on moments. I’m also very glad that the other three volumes of this are coming out later in the year, because it very much hasn’t wrapped anything up by the end of this first one.
For the MtG card, I decided to make a psuedo-keyword of Betrayal because the common theme among the characters is the experience of losing something, having something stolen from them, and their powerlessness to prevent it. Lands, houses, wives and husbands, the throne, or even just a childhood friend, none of this can be held on to or kept safe. And so the card is a bit cheaper than a 2/2 normally would be, but it can also be used against you by your opponents.
