Come Fly with Us

Come Fly with Us

IMG_2426

A couple years ago, Gary and I began tossing around the idea of getting an RV so we could go see Evan (and now his wife Kamie!) in Phoenix for longish weekends without wearing out our welcome, and to get used to that kind of travel in hopes that someday we might travel around the country visiting all the people and places where we used to live–except England which is harder to drive to. And because we’re all about discovering new places, making new friends.

So we rented a few RVs to test out their features…and eventually decided we were more the motorhome coach type…especially when he took up powered para-gliding, which made storage more of a necessity than ever so we can take his rig along, and which also literally grew the minimum requirements of our vehicle.

So without further rambling, here she is, our 2014 Newmar Ventana!

The day we arrived for our walk-thru we had so many questions, but I’ll never forget that new RV smell. Our welcome sign at Holland RV, who knows how to treat their customers!

IMG_2424 IMG_2425

When the three slides are out, it’s quite roomy!

IMG_2426We’re calling her “Flight Risk” — “Fly” for short. Vanity plates are ordered, but we had to go with “FLYRSK.” Yeah. Not because of bugs, let’s hope.

IMG_2449

Our dinette…extends to seat six!

IMG_2450

The photo is one of our favorites from Plantation Cottages on Kauai. Ahhh….(can’t drive there either.)

IMG_2451 IMG_2452 IMG_2453 IMG_2454 IMG_2456

IMG_2457We took Fly out for our first overnighter recently. Lots to learn still, and plenty of shopping to outfit her, but it’s going to be a fun journey!

More later, right now, gotta fly! (See what I did there?)

Bev out.

Exciting news about “The Kaleidoscope”

Exciting news about “The Kaleidoscope”

KaleidscopeAbout two years ago I began a journey with a manuscript I started calling “The Kaleidoscope.” I was visiting a friend, Karla Ramsey, in Texas, and as we drove the sprawling highways of  Houston, I shared some of my early kernels with her. We brainstormed and what-if’d until we arrived home with character ideas for a wacky, self absorbed computer genius who finds a magical ‘scope that turns his world upside down.

When I started the actual writing, I decided to post the journey here because so often readers hear of a book’s birth and ask about the process of writing and rewriting, editing and pitching. In earlier posts, I shared my first ideas and thoughts about the plot, story and development. I wrote, rewrote, took samples to my critique group, sought first readers’ feedback and hired the accomplished and savvy T Greenwood to assist me preparing it for submission.

I read in the genre, studied craft books and revisited technique.

TK is a departure from the cozy women’s fiction I’ve written before, I challenged myself to stretch and grow, and all these people helped. It takes a village, y’all! Of course every author hopes to see their manuscript grow up to become a book…

So it gives me great pleasure to announce that The Kaleidoscope has found a home!  I’ve just this week signed a contract with Wild Rose Press! TK will grow and bloom in their Crimson Rose, Mystery and Suspense division!

High concept with car chases, road trips to Yosemite, humor and some hankie moments, there’s something for everybody in “The Kaleidoscope.”

Stillo early to predict a release date, here’s what’s in store. What’s next? MORE editing, this time with my WR/CR editor, as well as lots of pre-marketing, cover discussions, and details I don’t even know about yet, so we’ll learn together.

Still too early to predict a release date, here’s a quick summary of the story:

In the vein of National Treasure, “The Kaleidoscope” asks the question; what if advances in artificial intelligence, together with mystical properties found in the earth’s elements, produced unexplainable images of the viewer’s future?

Harold Donaldson, a know-it-all computer analyst, unwillingly becomes the guardian of a magical kaleidoscope that reveals glimpses into the viewers’ future. When Harold’s boss tells him his interpersonal skills need improving for consideration for a promotion, he stalks a homeless man to prove his philanthropy, and ends up the custodian of a beautiful, handcrafted kaleidoscope. The ‘scope immediately attracts a circle of colorful characters, including Rhashan, a Rastafarian who teaches Harold to look beyond stereotypes, to Pepper Eubanks, a free-spirited neighbor recovering from breast cancer who inspires Harold to face his troubled past and embrace the future. Then when Harold’s best friend, Morrie Guthrie, views a long-lost cousin’s image, Harold becomes the focus of a ring of corporate spies intent on capturing the kaleidoscope and using the remarkable technology for their evil purposes.

Stay tuned and I’ll continue to blog the process to publication!

Here’s a Pinterest board for TK for those of you who appreciate the visual.

5-Star Honors

5-Star Honors

Fresh Start Summer has just received this 5-star Seal of Approval from www.readersfavorite.com!

5star-shiny-web

Here’s one of the reviews that contributed to the honor:

Reviewed By Patricia Day for Readers’ Favorite:

“Open the pages of this delightful book, Fresh Start Summer by Beverly Nault, and prepare to be entertained. Small-town Americans are proud of their roots and even more so of their hometown. When a movie company chooses the town of Cherryvale for its next movie production location, it affects residents in a variety of ways. Maggie does not approve. She loves Cherryvale just the way it is and does not relish movie-making hordes invading it. She envisions corruption of her beloved hometown, as well as the morals and ethics of the residents. No, she foresees only bad coming of it. She owns an animal sanctuary and has enough to handle without outside interference. Sam and Abby Madison are quite excited at the prospect and anticipate being a part of the production – acting and assisting. Carolyn and her twins Cassie and Carson long for the excitement the company will bring to sleepy Cherryvale, and other residents such as Grace and her husband and their Pastor take it all in their stride. What’s to get anxious about – these intruders will only be with them a short while?

When you put all these folk together and add two shady characters from the town, and a spoiled teenage film diva who has known nothing but success, you have the ingredients for an out of the ordinary story. Throw in greed, envy, kidnapping and arsonists, and the story turns from interesting to attention-grabbing. Initially, I wondered when the many characters would be brought together and what would the catalyst be? People and attitudes are changed radically as the intrigue unfolds; even people you’d never think of as friendly become changed beings when their ‘normal’ is tossed inside out. I finished the book loving the differences that had come about as the tale developed. Worth the read.”

Thanks, Patricia! FSSnewcover.do - Version 3

Fascinating Animal Facts – a Kickstarter campaign

Fascinating Animal Facts – a Kickstarter campaign

dyk -bat

Did you know that bats rest, sleep, mate and give birth upside down?

Bev here. Today I’m hosting Kimberley Payne, author of many books, including a series of science books for children. Tell us about yourself, Kimberly!

Thanks, Bev. This is a sample from my soon-to-be-released children’s activity book, Adam’s Animals, the second in the Science and Faith Matters series. You can find out more about the books and how you can help me get them published at the end of the article.

***

The wisest man who ever lived, Solomon, wrote the Book of Proverbs – a book of wise sayings to help us live godly lives. In this verse, Solomon points out that it is foolish to be idle and lazy. He says that we should learn from the example of the ant who doesn’t laze around and wait to be told what to do, but is willing to work hard and do what needs to be done.

Did you know that badgers can eat up to 200 earthworms in one day?

In the Bible, you can find the badger in Psalm 104:18 “The high mountains belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.”

The psalmist wrote many poems and songs to show appreciation to God and His creation. One of his poems praises God for how He not only creates but also tenderly takes care of His creation. God provides a place to hide in the cliffs for creatures like badgers (also known as coneys or hyraxes).

In the Bible, you can find bats in Leviticus 11:13-19  “These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, the red kite, any kind of black kite, any kind of raven, the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.”

In Bible times, the Israelites were instructed not to eat certain types of birds; including bats. God wanted His people to act differently than the people who didn’t believe in God. By avoiding these foods, God’s people set themselves apart and kept themselves pure and holy for Him.

Did you know that camels retain water and so their pee can be as thick as syrup?

In the Bible, you can find camels in Genesis 12:16 “He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.”

Since camels were rare in Bible times, they belonged to wealthy men only. God helped Abram (later called Abraham) to grow rich and accumulate many things, including camels. Camels were used for riding as well as for carrying loads, clothing, and tent material.

antDid you know that ants have two stomachs – one to hold the food for itself and one to hold food to be shared with other ants?

In the Bible, you can find the ant in Proverbs 6:6 “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!”

*************

“Adam’s Animals” is a children’s activity book that features more than 40 animals mentioned in the Bible and little-known facts about each. It’s ideal for 6 to 9 year olds, for home or school use and classroom sharing in grades 1-3 to supplement the Life Sciences Curriculum on Animal Life. It is the second book in the Science and Faith Matters series. The first book, “Trees of the Book – Learning from God’s Creation”, is a colourful introduction to trees, leaves and their corresponding Bible stories.

As the book creator, I have set a funding goal of $3500, with a deadline of February 28th, 2014. If you like my book idea, you can pledge any amount of money to make it happen.

Ever Wonder How God Uses Tragedy? Here’s one answer that will bless your socks off.

Ever Wonder How God Uses Tragedy? Here’s one answer that will bless your socks off.

Benjamin James Ramsey

Ben Ramsey before the crash.

We all wonder what God’s doing sometimes, and even while we’re walking through trials often doubt His hand and plan.

Ben on the motorcycle, just weeks before the crash.

On May 16, 2012, Ben Ramsey crashed his motorcycle into the rear end of an 18-wheeler going faster than 100 M.P.H., not wearing a helmet.

He lay in a coma for weeks while his family prayed, wondering whether he would even survive. What was God’s plan for their beloved?

Instead of me telling you how Ben’s doing now, I invite you to watch this stirring video, and I pray it blesses you and gives you hope in whatever you’re going through.

If you would like to know more about Ben’s journey, his mother, Dr. Karla Ramsey, keeps an informative and encouraging blog at Stepping Stones for TBI Recovery. More than a traumatic brain injury site, it’s a safe, encouraging place of hope where faith meets God even in the difficulties of everyday life.

Click through to watch the video, “Ben’s Hope,” and have your tissues ready.

Bev out.

Book announcement – On Higher Ground

Book announcement – On Higher Ground

ImageAuthor Paula Hrbacek is pleased to announce the release of her new Christian romance novel, “On Higher Ground”, a sweet romance about finding the courage to change.
The story features three humans and two angels.  The angels have been assigned to help the humans find God’s will for their lives.  They offer inspiration, good luck, divine intervention, and at times, appear in human form.

“One review of the book didn’t like the angels,” comments the author.  “She said that everything I had to say about a “still small voice” should have been attributed to the Holy Spirit, instead.  She’s right.  It could have been the Holy Spirit, but I had to use angels in order to create a dialogue.  Characters speak when they don’t understand or don’t know something.  The Holy Spirit doesn’t need to explain anything to the rest of the Trinity, because they already agree with each other.  So, instead, I made one angel an apprentice, and one a supervisor, so that they would have something to talk about.”

At the end of each chapter, the angels discuss why God has answered one prayer with a no, and another with a yes.  The angels take a look at why bad things happen to nice people.  It also discusses why good things happen to not so nice people and why bad things happen to bad people.
The main character is a young adult woman, Melanie Worlds, who has run out of luck; no job, no friends, no future.  Desperately wanting to replace the middleclass life she once knew up on “the Hill”, her faith is being tested to the limits.  JT, her newest friend, is up to something, but Melanie isn’t sure what it is.  And then Brad, her high school crush, comes back to town.  She can’t let him know how bad it is, or he’ll lose all respect for her.  And, to make matters worse, someone is trying to break into her apartment.

None of her prayers are getting answered, and she feels all alone.  But she’s not.  Two guardian angels have been assigned to help these three humans.  The angels know God’s plan, and it’s going to take everything they’ve got to pull it off.  To battle temptation, the angels will need to instill courage; courage to dare, courage to dream, and most of all, courage to love one another.

“On Higher Ground” has been getting four and five star reviews on Amazon.  People who have read the manuscript have this to say.
“A stunning story of angels, wonder and redemption. Prepare to be amazed.”  Duffy Brown, author of “Iced Chiffon” and “Killer in Crinolines”
“This is a novel with a lot of heart and soul.  But it’s also a very grounded one, thanks to the vivid, sometimes gritty details that Paula Hrbacek weaves into the narrative.  So many spiritual novels aren’t, and the characters end up being mouthpieces for the author’s beliefs. That doesn’t happen with “On Higher Ground”. Hrbacek gets her message across without ever losing sight of the story itself or making her characters into cardboard cut-outs. The main characters — Melanie, J. T., and Brad — are fully fleshed out.  We see them — faulty lines, good intentions, and all — and we care about what happens to them.”          — T. J. Banks, author of “Sketch People:  Stories Along the Way”.
“This was a very well written book that I couldn’t put down. It was written in such a different way by having the story of people down here on earth and the angels in heaven discussing the people on earth. What a great concept.  The entire book was enjoyable from start to finish and I highly recommend it.”  Barbara Kuebler Renczkowski

Paula Hrbacek is the author of “Stars Shine After Dark” and four non-fiction craft books.  She won first place in an international writing contest sponsored by Echoes of The Right to God in 2011.  She majored in journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and writes two newspaper columns for The Examiner, an online newspaper.

The Waltons, Mary McDonough and Me

The Waltons, Mary McDonough and Me

This week, Good Morning America and Entertainment Weekly are revisiting classic shows and movies, reminiscing with their cast members, and finding out what they’re doing now. On Friday, October 18th, GMA will air the interview segment featuring cast members of The Waltons. Since I get asked a lot about my experience writing with Mary McDonough (Erin Walton), I thought I’d take the opportunity to share some of the highlights of what’s happened since Lessons from the Mountain came out, and what Mary and I are both up to now.
The books I call my fraternal twins that both released March 2011
Evan took private acting lessons from Mary, and a germ of an idea for a book was planted when we'd listen to her talk about her fascinating life
When we had just started writing, we visited Patricia Neal at a book signing at D.G. Wills Books in La Jolla, packed with fans. When Pat left, Mary and I stood in the pouring rain (under an umbrella) wondering if our book would be as well received.
Me, Pat Neal, Mary and Pat's biographer Michael Shearer. They were both very encouraging, and I later interviewed Pat about her role on The Homecoming.
My husband, Gary, and Mary's husband Don. Probably discussing flying or skydiving or something. They had to cope with a lot while we wrote, but they managed our lengthy phone calls and late night editing sessions with a sense of humor. Did you read the book, yet, Don?
Mary and me standing on the porch of Earl Hamner's boyhood home. This was about a year before
Mary had a recurring role on The New Adventures of Old Christine. All these ladies were encouraging, and are in the acknowledgements. Mary recorded hours of memories while she drove in, and we used the tapes as the foundation for the book.
Lessons came out in March, 2011 and Mary hit the ground running, touring and making appearances all over the country.
Daddy Ralph Waite and Momma Michael Learned showed up to a book signing in Hollywood
Mary and her gorgeous daughter Sydnee.
The family has been so supportive. Who's next to write one, gang?
Lessons won the Ella Dickey literacy award, shared with Sen George McGovern
Lessons also won the Readers Favorite Gold
My name's not on the cover because George gave us the great quote. Fine, I'll give up the glory for the guy Mary shares a birthday with. Two degrees of separation?
While she was on tour, Mary and bro Richard Thomas reminisced.
When she returned from the book tour, Mary's 50th Birthday party became a surprise wedding! Was so wonderful to see these two so happy.
Newlyweds Don and Mary on the day.
This is Mary with Barry Livingston and Erin Murphy before a segment on being a child actor on CNN's Showbiz Tonight. The man in front is Harlan Boll, to whom Mary and I owe a lot of gratitude for all his PR help. Thanks, Harlan!
Mary signed thousands of copies of the book. I signed a few as well. :-)
Dolly Parton!
Loretta Lynn and Mary.
Mary and Alison Arngrim (Nellie from Little House) had fun talking about their books that came out at the same time.
The Waltons 40th Anniversary Party. The kitchen table wasn't large enough for everyone to sit around, but they tried!
Mary and I taking a selfie at the gala. What a goof! (Maybe it was the recipe we'd been sampling)
The authors.
The journey to publication took us back to D.G. Wills three years later. I still remember standing in the pouring rain after waving goodbye to Pat Neal wondering if our little book would become a reality. Thanks for the memories, Mary!
The dedication reads:

Now, Mary is busier than ever with her coaching, acting, and speaking. Keep up with her on Facebook, or her website. And yes, she’s writing more, but I’ll let her tell you about that herself.

Since Lessons came out, I’ve continued adding to my popular fiction series, The Seasons of Cherryvale. I’m also branching out, working on a high concept adventure story, The Kaleidoscope. I also have a new nonfiction project in the pipeline called “God Stops, a Pediatrician’s Faith Journey After Her Son’s TBI,” written with Dr. Karla Ramsey.

People often ask me what were my lessons from the mountain. My answer? To be open to the possibilities of what God has in store, and with some lots of hard work, your dreams can come true. ALSO, I learned that the people behind the scenes of one of the most classic, enduring television shows ever, from the creator and writer Earl Hamner, to the crew and cast, guest stars and their families, are all truly a part of an American legend.

I’ve been honored and blessed to be a small part of The Waltons‘ legend, continuing its positive influence on the world’s culture through entertainment. Because after all, “the Walton way” is truly at the heart of every loving community.

Purposeful Planning by Phyllis Sather

Christian Living

“Late for an appointment, a man hurried out and hailed a cab. Jumping in, he said to the driver, “Get going and drive as quickly as you can.” After a few blocks, he impatiently asked, “Are we almost there?” “Almost where?” replied the driver. In his hurry the passenger had failed to give the driver the address of his destination.

That may seem like an unlikely story, yet today many people are so busy trying to keep up with the rapid pace of living, they haven’t stopped to consider what their goal in life is.” Millie Stamm

Our book Purposeful Planning will help you figure out what goals the Lord would like you to have as a person and as a family.

The Godly Man’s Picture & A Godly Wife by Puritan Thomas Watson

Spiritual Growth

The soul being so precious, and salvation so glorious-it is the highest point of prudence to make preparations for the eternal world. It is beyond all dispute, that there is an inheritance in light; and it is most strenuously asserted in Holy Scripture that there must be a fitness and suitability for it (Col. 1:12). If anyone asks, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?” the answer is, “He who has clean hands, and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:4). To describe such a person is the work of this ensuing treatise. Here you have the godly man’s portrait, and see him portrayed in his full lineaments.
