What is Terrorism? Why I Want All My Friends to See the New Documentary, "If A Tree Falls"

About a week ago I saw a preview of the new film, "If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front." The film will begin playing in San Francisco this Friday, July 15 at Landmark Theaters in SF and Berkeley. I think everyone I know should see this film. "If A Tree Falls" [...]

Four Days, Four Books

One of the best things about living in the San Francisco Bay Area is that a lot of people come here. A lot. Of course there are friends and relatives who want the benefits of sleeping for free on the couch, but any night of the week there are countless fun activities to choose from. [...]

General Strike!

The last general strike in the U.S. was in Oakland, California in 1946. After that, the U.S. Government succeeded in preventing general strikes by passing the Taft-Hartley Act, making solidarity strikes by unions illegal (among other things). The fact that the words "general strike" have even been uttered in conjunction with Wisconsin is absolutely thrilling. [...]

Twitter: How-to and Who to Follow

So, the other day, my good friend Manjula joined Twitter, and while we were on the phone I found myself saying "And you should follow @SFMOMA and @Good and and and…" Which made me think how useful I've found other people's Twitter lists – and how I should write one too. Before I begin my [...]

Why I'm Excited about Wisconsin

I feel like I have been holding my breath for days while watching what is going on in Wisconsin, as protesters continue to occupy the state capital building. I have no idea what is going to happen today, or what the implications are, but I am very excited by a lot of things. I'm excited [...]

Food, Food Movements, and Food Revolutions

You know, I am really into food.  I mean, have you seen my cupcake blog? At times I've considered giving up all my media / publicity / political stuff and going to culinary school or otherwise becoming involved in food and food justice movements. I can feel pretty schizophrenic a lot of the time because [...]

Voces de Cambio/Voices of Change – Supporting Education in Guatemala

In 2008, I traveled to Guatemala to study Spanish and take my first trip outside of the United States and Canada. You can see my writing from then here, here, and here. While I was there, I met some really awesome people who do awesome things. One of them, photographer Lucas Mulder, just launched a [...]

Birthdays

My birthday was on Friday and I'm in the middle of a few days of celebration. Pictured above is my and two of my dear friends, Manjula and Emily during our trip to Ano Nuevo and the Swanton Berry Farm (Max was there too, but he was taking the picture). More on that in a [...]

Italia: How I Spent My Winter Vacation

So, in December, I went to Europe for the first time. Ever. Just like when I went to Mexico last year, here are a list of random things I thought about while I was on the trip: Protests. During the week I was in Rome, students all over Italy were protesting cuts to education. This [...]

2010 According to WordPress

I am totally a numbers nerd, and one of the reasons I like WordPress so much is because they provide such great statistics. All the sudden this year, they sent out a year end summary! I'm sure you'll see others posting them on their blogs, and I couldn't resist posting mine. What do these numbers [...]
