From the Newsletter - I Fantasmi del Passato: What inspired me to write it?

I Fantasmi del Passato book cover

I have always been attentive to social issues and, above all, to human relationships, which often prove difficult to manage. In my life, I have slammed doors many times, disappeared without looking back, and left situations unfinished because I was too caught up in my "Tarzan syndrome" to move on from a project, a life, a job, a trip, even a book, to the other.

At a certain point, I decided to reconcile these thoughts of mine in a single book. A book that talks about friendship, resentment, professional successes, and, above all, personal failures.

The book's themes are varied, and I imagine that anyone who has uprooted themselves from their origins can feel represented by these characters whom I love equally, precisely for their human nature, often predictable.

The Ghosts of the Past (I Fantasmi del Passato), in bookstores from 8 December 2023 but already available for preorders, aims to be an invitation to reflect on the most basic values of life. According to some, the character who is the main one, not in my opinion, seems to be a successful man who has found strength in his misadventures and frustrations to redeem himself in life. Yet, despite the success attributed to him in two countries and many fields, he cannot understand his best friend's refusal to keep that friendship alive. He racks his brains after over thirty years, and even if he doesn't say it, he realises that he has everything, but he no longer has that friend, the only friend, at his side.

The story then follows a backward path towards the search for the lost friendship. The dialogues range from facetious to super-serious, with topics that many, even today, may find heavy.

I had fun writing it, creating continuous twists and connections between my books, some published and others not, but also with the real world. For example, Pascal de Napoli is my pseudonym for the other genre I love, children's stories. The book itself is referenced on various occasions in the book. In short, according to some of my beta readers, "in some parts, it seems like an episode of Black Mirror".

The phrase on the book's cover is an adaptation of my thoughts on a concept expressed in a book by Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu. I believe there was no better phrase to explain the purpose of my book. A book which, unlike the others I have written, has neither a prologue nor a conclusion because these are in the book itself.

Like all the covers of my books, I created this using photos of Naples and creating silhouettes of the two boys on the computer. You will notice that the two figures do not represent two middle-aged men, but two young people drinking a coffee with a view of Naples. I wanted to use this cover as if it were a due act towards "what could have been" if the two protagonists had not been lost.

There are strong autobiographical elements in the book. Anyone who knows me understands this immediately. He doesn't realize, however, that I am represented by all the characters, not just the one who seems to be the most obvious.

The story, initially a single chapter, was created for the theatre. When I realized that dramaturgy differs from writing a book, I decided to lower the flag and add the other two chapters. However, for a whim, I wanted to leave the chapters as Acts in honour of the initial intent.

I hope that the reader finds the topics covered stimulating and that at the end of the book, he can look at the cover and the back, understand the meaning of that sentence, and then look at the front and never have regrets.
