Title: “Dystopian Futures: Are they Science-Fact-or-Fiction?”
Date: Saturday, May 31
Time: 4:15 PM
Science-Fiction and Fantasy authors know how to keep protagonists on their toes and readers at the edge of their seats! Their stories of other worlds and dystopian futures may be filled with magic and mayhem, hi-tech terrors, heroes and villains, but the haunting parallels between our world and the fictional worlds they’ve created is what really keeps us up at night. With Veronica Roth (DIVERGENT SERIES) moderating, join authors Alaya Dawn Johnson (THE SUMMER PRINCE ), Danielle Page (DOROTHY MUST DIE), and Marie Lu (LEGEND SERIES) as they discuss the inspiration behind their action-packed novels, the fantastical elements they deploy, and more!

The second song off my Young Elites playlist is Fever Ray’s “If I Had a Heart”. Just an all-round badass piece (and also the title theme for my favorite show, Vikings). Noms.
This will never end ‘cause I want more,
More, give me more, give me more. …
Crushed and filled with all I found
Underneath and inside
Just to come around
More, give me more, give me more.

Up until The Young Elites releases on Oct. 7, I’ll occasionally drop in songs from my TYE playlist.
The first one: Sweet Dreams Are Made of This, the Emily Browning version. I love the original, but I love the creepy, subdued sound of the Sucker Punch cover. Fits Adelina perfectly.
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused

So remember when I told you guys that I...
So remember when I told you guys that I wrote a song for Day and June in Legend? Well, this is it! It’s called “Hey Now” and it’s dual perspective. Because of that, I’m going to add the lyrics below so you can follow along if you’d like.
It’s not about their relationship with each other but rather, each of their individual relationships with the story and ultimately their convergence. I hope you guys like it ;-;
Verse - Day:
Hey now.
Take a look around.
Look at what you’ve done.
All that you’ve torn down
Hey there.
Citizens are scared.
Why don’t you think twice
before throwing bombs in the air?
Hey now.
Who’s listening?
My words are
unscripted.
Hey now.
Open your eyes.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Get up and fight.
Chorus - Day:
You’ve taken all that you could take from me.
Now I don’t need your sorry eyes to see.
I’m not a ghost I’m in the flesh.
Guess I’m good at evading death.
I feel it like a throbbing in my brain.
I know who I am, we’re not the same.
I’m not the legend that I was.
I’m standing here a champion.
Verse - June:
Hey now
Take a look around.
Look at all the bodies
That are scattered on the ground.
Hey there
Citizens beware.
The people that you trust
Will become your worst nightmare.
Hey now.
I’m listening.
Their message
is cryptic.
Hey now.
Turn on the light.
Hey now
Hey now.
Get up and fight.
Chorus - June:
You’ve turned me into something that I’m not.
I’m standing with a gun held on the spot.
Pull the trigger, who am I?
Redesign me, let it fly.
My eyes are clear and I see farther now.
You put on quite a show, so take a bow.
I’m not the prodigy I was.
I’m standing here a champion.
Bridge:
Hey now.
Who’s listening?
Their message
is cryptic.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Fight now.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Hey now.
Chorus - Both:
Standing hand in hand, take your best shot.
We’re taking back the world you took from us.
Hey now
Break down.
We’re proud.
Fight now.
Bullets cannot kill immortal hearts.
You never had a prayer from the start.
Hey now.
Can you hear?
Hey now.
Losing fear.
Standing hand in hand, take your best shot.
We’re taking back the world you took from us.
Legendary prodigy.
Fight with us, we’ll set you free.
Lyrics!!!!! Too cool—the words are perfect and totally fitting, with a fantastic melody. Love it!

the dreaded "d" word
i’ve been thinking for a long time how best to share my views on a topic that has always been very important to me:
diversity.
yeah, yeah … i know.
![]()
![]()
the word itself causes an array of reactions, some visceral, most emotional.
it’s loaded for many reasons, least of all the fact…
Perfectly said. Perfectly.
