STUNNING! A review of DEMON KISSED by HM Ward

I had to share this review of DEMON KISSED with you guys. She did a great job sharing the book and she did it without any spoilers!

Check it out!

Shawna Johnson's review of DEMON KISSED by H.M. Ward

Jul 26, 2011

"Just one word is going to start off my review….

Stunning

Like seriously. Wow I have to tell you all, I loved this book. I really wasn't thinking too much into reading it, then I re-read the summary and I was like okay, I will read it. I now my mind is like "What the heck, how did that turn out to be so utterly amazing?!" I was seriously hooked from page one. And I am not lying one bit, maybe even the first paragraph had me by my teeth.

First off, the very idea for the book. A demon kiss. Like, how amazing does this sound….amazingly bad…oh shoot. Just amazing. I have never have came across a concept like this one, and it worked so perfectly. H.M. had me caught in an amazing story and I was glued to my nook all day.

I don't even think I could give you all a summary of this book, because it would be so full of spoilers and my intense emotion you all would be like…"Well, she just messed this up for all of us! Dang YOU!" But no, I will not do that to you all, because this books needs to be read and felt by you!

The characters were amazing, and plot was killer, and I felt like I could see every image H.M. Ward gave me right in front of me. Everything came alive and I was so hooked into this story, I could not believe what was going on from one page to the next. I never really knew who to fully trust in this book and I wanted to get to the bottom of every mystery Ivy had, because I desperately wanted everything to work out somehow for her.

The ending wanted to make me hurl my nook at the wall, I was just so torn with everything going on, and then it ended! I could not just leave it like that! Needless to say, I am anxiously awaiting book number two to come out in August. I almost feel like I can not wait that long. Because I HAVE to know how Ivy and Collin will come out of all of this.

Pick up this book. You will be drawn into this book and you will not want to put it down until it is done. It is simply amazing and I must know what happens next.

Happy Reading All.

Real heroes don't wear their underpants on the outside

When I was a little girl I wanted to take ice skating lessons. My mom would bring us to skate at the ice rink in Dix Hills and I'd watch the older girls skate backwards, do jumps, and spins. But this wasn't the primary reason I wanted to learn to skate. It wasn't for something noble either – like staying healthy, getting in shape, or learning to be more graceful.

Nah, it was one thing and one thing only that made me think it would be super cool to go flying across the ice, hair whipping in the wind…SPARKLES! Have you seen a figure skater's outfit? Not only is the entire thing shiny, but it sparkles like crazy too.

I never got my lessons. It's okay, I woulda broken my head anyway.  My mom knew ice + a-jumping-Holly wasn't such a great combination.  But, it didn't keep me from buying some figure skater clothes with my own money. I saved up and the only thing I could afford were the tights. So I got those. Let me tell you – they were SUPER SHINY and a PITA to put on, but I loved them. They were as close as I was gonna get to super sparklie shiny Holly. So I'd put on the tights under shorts or a skort and go to the ice rink. My mom would tell me that I would freeze. At first I thought she was right. I was gonna be freezeing, but those tights were friggin hot. Over time, I learned that they were like wearing snow pants – they were insulated super tights.

Flash-forward to yesterday. My 7-year-old son has the weirdest expression on his face and asks me why is Superman wearing underpants over his tights. Well, that's a really good question.

I told him it's because people used to wear their underpants on the outside in the olden days. And his super suit is shiny like skater clothes, b/c he goes to his Ice Palace a lot and its really cold there. The super shiny fabric keeps the cold away.

My husband was laughing like crazy at my girl-i-fication of an icon, but when you think about it, Superman circa 1980′s (Christopher Reeves) costume was the ultimate skater garb!

Christopher Reeves was an awesome Superman.  I think he was just awesome in general.  He continued to inspire people until the end of his life, and still does today.  That's the kinda hero that I LOVE to see.  Someone who's real, has limitations and doesn't let that stop them.

As a writer, I try to make characters like that in my novels.  In Demon Kissed, the heronie Ivy Taylor is seventeen-years-old, and highly flawed.  I've heard some adults say that regular teenagers aren't like her – their lives aren't that hard.  Maybe some kids have it easy, but I think being a teenager is one of the screwiest times in a person's entire life.  Not only are you not a child, but you aren't an adult yet either.  People expect you to listen like a child – without question, but act like an adult (what adult doesn't ask questions?).  The teens that have read Demon Kissed related to Ivy greatly and said she was just like a regular teenager.  That was exactly what I was going for, because it's what kids need.

A hero isn't someone who's perfect.  A real hero is someone who is screwed-up and keeps going anyway.  It's a person who knows what they have to do is beyond difficult – maybe even impossible – and they find the courage to do it anyway.  A real hero is the person who wears their underpants on the inside, skips the shiny tights, and expects their butt to crash into the ice once in a while…and when it does, they get up and keep going.

Twilight Rip-offs & the Damn Donkey Wanna-Be's

The top 5 Twilight rip-offs of all time:

5. Demon Kissed: It's so obvious that the author was copying Twilight. I mean, the book has a boy and a girl.  They go to high school.  They sit in class.  He has nice hair and he's hot. Oh, and the trees. There are trees, man! Just like Twilight. There are lots of trees in Twilight.

4. The Bible: This book is such a total Twilight copy-catter. It's not even funny! Well, first – it has trees. Psh. Think of something new! And it has this guy, who likes this girl – but they can't be together. Like I havent heard this before. Please. And the plot! Good vs. evil – totally Twilight.  Get a new idea!

3. The Consitution of the United States of America: Total rip off. I mean look at it! It's written on PAPER! Twilight was written on paper. And we all know that paper comes from trees. Copy Twilight much?  You know you did!

2. Winnie the Pooh: Eeyore is totally an Edward clone. That mysterious dark, moodiness screams Edward. Add in Tigger is obviously Jacob.  Jumping around, acting all happy but he's really bent outa shape that he's the only one.  Please.  It's totally a poser book.

1. Webster's Dictonary: This dude was dumb enough to use the same words that were in EVERY SINGLE TWILIGHT book!  Talk about total rip off.  Plus the book wasn't as big as all of the Twilight books put together.  The book was even printed on the same color paper.  If you can't think of something new, please keep your hack ideas to yourself!

I hope to God that you realized that this post was written tounge-in-cheek/ sarcastic before now.  In case you missed it – it was the stupidest reasons you could possibly compare Twilight to another book.

If you have no idea what those books were about, and someone said it's like Twilight because…and the reason sounds okay, what happens?  The reader tries to cram that book into the Twilight frame of reference.

What I'm saying is WHY?  Good God, why?  It skews good books that stand on their own, that have nothing to do with Twilight.  Then the reader is reading the book, thinking How is this like Twilight?, and it totally botches their reading experience.

First of all, that's a crappy thing to do to other readers.  There are fans who can't get enough Twilight stuff, then they pick up Websters and are like WTF?  No stars for you, Mr. Webster!  And then they write an evil Amazon review based on the fact that they THOUGHT it was supposed to be like Twilight.  Then you have the opposite reaction.  The anti-Twilight people who are like Ewe, and poking the book with a stick to make sure it's not as gross as they think.

Then you have everyone else who is in the middle.  They're reading and wondering how on earth what you said makes sense, and they focus on that instead of enjoying the book.  Eyeore is freakin awesome and cannot be enjoyed to the max when you are wondering why he is like Edward and wondering when his vampire teeth might appear and rip Pooh's head off.  Cuz, Pooh is a silly ole bear – they said it enough times that you know it's coming!  But it never comes!  Major disappointment!

Can we please stop trying to shove stuff into holes it doesn't fit into?  Some things don't go together.  Telling people drink Vodka and a glass of chocolate milk would just be mean, but it's totally the same thing!  The result is people puking up books, wondering how it sucked so bad, when they're actually pretty good  - on their own.  Learning to appreciate Tigger as a hyperactive nut who doesn't listen is awesome.  Looking at him and thinking Jacob doesn't have stripes, makes you totally miss that part.

My advice: Create your own frame of reference.   If you hate a book – good for you!  If you love a book – good for you!  But it should be based on that book, and not whether or not it fits a preconceived notion of the book that was based on something else.

The wonderful thing about tiggers, Is tiggers are wonderful things!

Their tops are made out of rubber, Their bottoms are made out of springs!

…But the most wonderful thing about tiggers is, I'm the only one!

There is nothing new under the sun, people.  There are just good storytellers who have been awesome enough to share their stories with us.

The Role of Bunnies in the Apocalypse (aka the Grackles are Evil Post)

You might see one of these birds, known as a grackle, and think – oh, a nice little crow. You might even think it's pretty and cute like this little grackle right there.

But, don't let it fool you.  (They don't really look like that.  See the evil grackle depicted below).

This is the evil kinda bird that inspires birds everywhere to become evil.

Don't believe me?  Well let's examine this foul fowl.  (Bitchin' 60′s lingo!  oh yeah!)

It has beady little black eyes.

All the better to see you with while it pecks your eyes out.

Good birds have nice big eye balls like Precious Moments figurines.

Its plumage is the color choice of creatures of the night everywhere.

Okay, think about it. Would Big Bird be such a good guy if he wasn't yellow?

It's possible that Big Bird would have had a life of crime if his bill, beak, and plumage were inky black.

Snuffy wouldn't have played with him, and he'd get stuck hanging out with Emo Elmo. Then, Big Bird would join a gang and be one big badass grackle, flapping his ginormous self all over the country terrorizing children everywhere.

And you thought it was bad when he was blue.

It's never alone. If you happen come across one grackle, get ready to duck and cover b/c there are 40,000 more grackles behind you, ready to peck your eyes out. They are like flying rat roaches. Nice animals don't swarm. When was the last time you saw a swarm of 1000 cute and fluffy bunnies? Btw, if you do see a pack of bad ass bunnies, its only b/c the grackles saddled them up cuz they didn't want to fly anymore. Cute bunnies work well for their MO.

Sure, people will think, "Oh look a cute bunny, and another, and another." Then they notice there are 1000s of bunnies!!! But it's too late. The bunny decoys lured the stupid human right where the grackles wanted.

Now the dumb human is surrounded, and the grackles are thinking "I call the eye balls!!!!" There is never only one grackle. If you only see one, it's already too late. You're a dead man.

Its name is evil. GRACKLE. Does that sound like a nice little love bird to you? Any name that makes you scrape phlegm out of your throat is indicative of a bad bird.

Let's try these famous/ nice bird names: Big Bird. Sounds pretty. Sounds nice. No throaty scrape-ie sound.

And that's the end of the list. Why? Cuz most birds are evil! Yeah, Ravens, Crows, and the ultimate evil bird – GR(insert phleg

m here)ACK(spew a little)LES(cuz they are never alone).

Its call is unnatural. Have you ever heard these things? You'd expect a crow caw orbird song of some sort, but no. Evil birds don't sing. That's why Disney didn't paint a grackle tweeting back at Snow White from its perch at the end of her pretty little finger.

They make horrid noises that make listening to fingernails on a chalkboard sound pleasant. Grackle calls sound like crushing a cat in a trash compactor. Now multiple that by 1000 because grackles never travel alone.  If you don't remember that part, you are totally screwed!

Anyway, that noise is not birdsong. It's a war cry that the evil birds screech before they dive to peck out your eyes.

The first time I saw these flying rat birds was at night. 1000′s of them swarmed in the dark. The filled every tree within sight, making them look like they were topped with tar. Add in the awesome sound, and I finally understood why the movie The Birds was freaky.

The first time I saw it, I thought it would be like being pelted by butterflies. Who's afraid of birds?

With an attitude like that, it's easy to see why a bird apocalypse is inevitable. Grackles could use their bunny army decoys and then swarm in en masse.

People would be like, "Look, pretty birdies!" while the evil grackles took over the earth.

Grackle Apocalypse Survival Tools:

1. Duct Tape – Wrap your house, doors, windows, porch, everything! with the sticky side of the duct tape facing out. Actually, you need to have that neighbor down the street do it – you know, the one you hate and wish would suddenly have to move to Antarctica. Tell him you'll do his house next. That way you are safe in your sticky grackle-proof house and your crappy neighbor is stuck outside during the grackle attack. Since mean neighbors are dumb, he won't notice until it's too late.

2. One Cat – Oops. That won't work. Grackles eat cats. Obviously they make those hideous grackle sounds the loudest in trees, b/c they are eating live cats up there, and using trash compactors to tenderize.

Use cats as bait to lure the flesh eating grackles to your mean neighbor's front porch.

Place the cat on the mat.

Ring door bell.

Run like hell.

3. Bunnies – Use bunnies as double decoys. This will fool the grackles since they use bunnies to attack. A few randomly placed bunnies will make the grackles think they already invaded your house. Be sure to put little saddles on the bunnies. This makes them extra cute, and only the really evil grackles use bunny saddles. All the marginally evil grackles will stay away.

Disclaimer:

This is not an exhaustive list of how to defend yourself against grackles. The author cannot be held liable if you get pecked, attacked, or eaten by grackles. Big Bird is in no way affiliated or involved with grackles of any kind. Emo Elmo does not exist, nor was he in a grackle gang. Snow White does not fraternize with evil birds, and avoids all grackle-like birds since she was in the woods when her step-mom tried to have her heart hacked out by a crazy-ass hunter. Sam Butcher continues to create very cute Precious Moments figurines, none of which were attacked by grackles.

This post was written, in satire, entirely for the purpose of getting the readers ready for CURSED by H.M. Ward, the sequel to DEMON KISSED. Now you know what grackles are…be prepared. Tape, kitty, bunny! CHECK!

Behind the Book: A Backstage Look at Demon Kissed by HM Ward

As Demon Kissed rapidly approches 40,000 facebook fans and the book is creeping higher and higher on the Amazon bestseller list – I thought we'd do something fun! This is a behind the book secrets about the creation of Demon Kissed by H.M. Ward.

HOW DID YOU START?

I wanted to practice writing something that was emotional.  I chose a memory from high school.  It was one of those times I did something stupid and the memory was filled with several different emotions.  I started by trying to convey the emotions via words to the reader, so that you could not only see what was happening, but feel it too.

CASTING CHARACTERS

I knew I wanted an INFJ heroine.  It's a Myers-Briggs personality type.  Yeah, weird way to make a character, but whatever.  That personality type makes up less than 1% of the world's population, so I thought it would be more interesting to write about.  They are classic control freaks who are intraverted, but extremely perceptive and intutive to the point that their sensitivity and idealism is detramental.  Huh?  That kinda person is hard-wired to think a certain way and can end up martyring themselves because of their ideals.

When you smoosh that kinda person together with ideas about pre-destination (do you have any free will or are you on a predestined path) it's kind of interesting to think about.  And the very idea of being trapped in a preset destiny would drive a control freak nuts.  It made me wonder what happens if a character is forced into being the opposite of what she thinks she is.  That's Ivy.  The plot started to flesh out from here.

PLOTTING

I still didn't start writing much at this point.  There was no story – no conflict.  What hideous conflict did I want to stick this idealistic, intutive girl into?

One day I came across a Bible verse that always fascinated me.  Ive never read an exgetical paper on it, despite how interesting it was.  I dont think I've heard anyone preach on it either.  (I went to seminary – aka theology school for college).  Anyway, the passage was about the 1000 year rein of terror and God marking his people.  That was where the idea for the Martis came from.  They were people who were chosen and given a mark.  That's the only commonality with the scripture.  I fleshed out the idea from there and gave them abilities and a history.  The Valefar were created as their counterpart.  And humans got sucked into both sides over the centuries without their consent.

From there stuff fleshed out pretty quickly.  I ended up with a multi-threaded plot line and then intertwined that sucker.  The entire manuscript was completed in a few months.  I had no intention of getting it published.  I was just writing to write.  And I wanted to see if I could write an entire book.

SUBLIME

The way the book is actually written is different.  Rather than being a cognitive read where the writer is telling what the character is thinking and allowing that to tell the story, I did something different.  The story is told from Ivy's point of view, but rather than the story being totally in her head – it's primarly told via her emotions and the way she's reacting to the things that are happening to her.  It tilted the way the reader expereinces the book slightly, so that it's more of an expereince than a cognitive read.  Some people hate that.  They want to be told what to think and exactly what's happening.  Demon Kissed isn't written like that.  I left it open to the reader to perceive for themselves what's happening, and whether its good or bad via Ivy's emotions.

That's why some of the reader reviews have such different opinions about the storyline.  Some people love Collin while others think he's an ass.  Some readers thought there was a love triangle, while others were glad there wasn't one.  Yes, they all read the same book.  And I think that's awesome!  It allows the reader to experience the adventure along with Ivy.  It also makes discussing Demon Kissed with your book club way more interesting!

PUBLICATION

This is a long story, so I'll condense it for this post.  After I wrote the story, I posted the facebook fan page.  I quickly attracted 10K fans that loved the idea.  I submitted query letters to agents thinking I would look into traditional publishing.  I had no problem finding an agent, in fact several top agents offered me representation.  I had to choose one!

As I progressed down the traditional publication path Borders entered their bankruptsy and things looked hairy to me.  Maybe I'm too much doom and gloom, but I didnt want to sell my book and have it stuck somewhere in eternal limbo as the publishing industry collapses.  To top that off, they didn't know what the value of a facebook fan was.  I found myself explaining to them why facebook is important.  Dude, that was just backwards.  At some point I realized that they weren't bringing much to the table.  I have a strong background in sales of tangible and intangible goods, I'm one of the best professional photographers in my region, and I know editors.  What was I doing?  I told my agent to pull all outstanding manuscripts that were with publishers.  I'd decided to self-publish.  And that's what I did.  I also fired my New York agent, and went solo.

By the end of this month I will have sold more copies of Demon Kissed than the traditional publishers thought possible.  Why?  Because of awesome fans like you!  You guys loved the book from the beginning and told all your friends.  And it took off.  The facebook page has almost 40,000 fans now!  And I still talk to everyone and try to answer all posts.  Stop by.  Say hi!

DEMON KISSED #2 – CURSED

The sequel to Demon Kissed is entitled Cursed and is anticipated to be released August 31, 2011.  I've seen people speculating the location of the next book and writing all sorts of stuff on blogs and book sites.  I'll spill a little here.

Cursed starts in Italy.  Ivy accompanies Shannon as stated at the end of Demon Kissed.  Her plans are to discover a way to free Collin from the Underworld and to learn more about Kreterus, the demon that wanted to capture her.  The book's location shifts to the Underworld when Ivy finds that the only way to retrieve Collin is to physically go and get him.  But, she has a couple of problems: She has to find a way in and the doors to Hell aren't clearly marked.  No one knows where they are.  To top that off, the living are not welcome amongst the dead.  Ivy is not only alive, but possesses angel blood.  Her fate as the Prophecy One solidifies with each step she takes towards saving Collin.  She is forced to choose between following her heart or saving herself.

To read a free sample chapter of Cursed, click here!

Pre-order for Cursed will be listed soon on the official website.  There may be a collector's edition available.  Hint hint.

Thank you super awesome fans!

Sucktacular – Buyer Beware!

I've gotten several emails from fans who got the ebook version of Demon Kissed online from an unauthorized source & got a Trojan Horse virus instead of the book.

Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iTunes, & Smashwords are the only official sources to buy the electronic/ ebook version of Demon Kissed by HM Ward. The official ebook is only $0.99 & 100% virus free.

The stolen copy was hacked and infected. I can't do anything to stop it, but you can by spreading the word and directing your friends and family to the places to buy. The DemonKissed.com site tells you where you can get copies of the book that are safe and authentic.

Sorry to see so many people getting screwed. :(   It's pretty sucktacular.

You guys are amazing!  Thank you so much for sharing.  I totally thought of Demon Kissed as a paranormal romance novel, but tons of you are telling me that it was so intense that it's totally a thriller.  That is awesome feedback!  You guys are right, it does have a little bit of everything.  Well, enough babbling from me – let's see what you guys are saying about Demon Kissed!

Feel free to post on Facebook.  We love to hear from you and I try to answer everyone who posts.  :)

Amy's review Apr 10, 2011

5 of 5 stars

"Wow! The story line was great, and the concept of the book was something I've never read before. There were so many twists that I couldn't predict anything that happened. I was kept guessing the entire time. Books like this are a rare find, especially when not that many people know about them. So I'm spreading the word! Read this book! You won't regret it! The sequel can't come out soon enough!"

Allie B.'s review – April 20, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"This is one of the rare finds where the story draws you in and refuses to let go. Narrated in such detail, you are taken on an epic journey that will make you feel a part of Ivy Taylor's world, with a vested interest in each character. It takes an extraordinary piece of literature to drive the emotions and senses felt while reading this novel. Demon Kissed is the beginning of an amazing adventure…."

Manadyln's review – March 30, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"Okay well, that was extremely intense. I was sweating, that's how engrossed in the story I was. This story brings a whole new meaning to soul mate. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about the fight of good & evil-literally. It was jam packed with demons, prophecies, love and loss. Huge cliffhanger at the end! I seriously can't not wait to see what happens next. Exceptional Debut that will leave you gasping for more……"

Lenone's review – April 21, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"This book was unlike any other book I've ever read. At first glance you're probably like oh this is just another one of those "Twilight" type books, but you'd be so wrong! You get drawn in from the very beginning and it doesn't let go of you even after you read the last page! My only regret is that I didn't read it slower, because now I can't wait for the next book to come out."

Angie's review – April 14th, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"One of the best books I have read in some time. The story-line is great. Often I have to read a chapter or so into a book to really get into it, but not this one. It pulled me in right from page one. I can't wait for the second one to be released later this summer. I LOVED IT!!! I strongly suggest this book to anyone who likes to read. Especially if you like the Twilight and/or H.O.N. (House of Night) series'. I personally was getting tired with the vampire books. This book about the war between 'Angels' and 'Demons' was a nice change of pace."

Emily's review – April 11, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"When I first found the book (about 7 months ago) it looked amazing just from the first chapter. I ordered the book about 14 hours ago and havent put it down except for to go to sleep. It was amazing. The way the author shares Ivy's story. There are really no words to describe how good this book is. Just read it."

Katie's review – March 30, 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"Downloaded 'Demon Kissed' this morning and finished it tonight! I just couldn't put it down until I read every last word. H.M. Ward pulls you into the ever changing world of Ivy Taylor. I loved, loved, loved this book! Hoping to see more books featuring Ivy Taylor in the future."

Grace's review – April 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"Gobbled me up, chewed me thouroly, and spit me back out wanting more at the end. definatly one of my top 5!"

Hannah's review – April 2011

5 out of 5 stars

"i loved the first book! i pre ordered the book and i finished reading it, it was so awesome! :) i cant wait to start reading the second book" – Amanda C.

"I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and I could not put it down! And then in a just a few hours (minus a break for dinner) I was finished! Demon Kissed is only $0.99 on Kindle Today Only!

The Kindle edition of Demon Kissed is on sale for only $0.99 today only! What an awesome way to hop into Easter weekend! Bad pun, I know. But I had to!

BTW, lots of folks didn't realize that you do NOT need a Kindle to read an ebook.  You can read them on your computer, ipad, itouch, and several smart phones.  For more info, go to the Demon Kissed listing.  On the right side of the page it says "Read books on your computer or other mobile devices."  Check that out for more info.  It's nice that you can read ebooks on electronic devises that you already own.

We'll be doing some fun stuff on the facebook fan page this weekend too.  Make sure you peek in.  You can win stuff too!

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!
