The lowest form of wit? Nah.
Because the world needs more laughs, my Satire Series continues with yet another installment. There’s a lot to Satire. So far, I’ve been breaking it down by nuance and showing examples. Today I’m examining sarcasm in satire. There’s a LOT of it.
If you’ve stumbled across my blog for the first time, do scroll back to read the first posts on the topic. Who knew Satire was such a vast human expression? Should you enjoy my eclectic posts, I invite you to subscribe. My interests are broad and varied. You can tell by my tag cloud that I blog just about everything!
Here’s a short recap if you’re stopping here for the first time:
Satire~ The word satire owes its roots to the Latin for well-fed as in saturated and sated. Makes sense to me. Being well-fed feels good and so does having a good laugh.
An interesting tidbit~ Sarcasm is a form of ironic language intended to convey scorn or insult. It can be mocking, dismissive, or contemptuous. Not surprisingly, the root of the word sarcasm actually means to strip off the flesh. No kidding.
Here’s an example: A sarcastic retort delivered by Prime Minister Winston Churchill is considered history’s funniest use of sarcasm. Depending on which version you read, the first salvo was dropped by either socialist MP Bessie Braddock, or Lady Astor the first female MP (MP is short for Member of Parliament). Whatever her name, the woman accused him of being” disgustingly drunk”, to which the Prime Minister responded: “My dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.”
Ouch.
Who could forget this gem from Groucho Marx? “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.”
Now that’s funnier. And I’ll bet you read it in his voice.
:D
The Marx brothers had several hilarious movies driven by each brother’s personality. Groucho was known for his witty sarcasm. I think the greatest example of sarcastic satire is the Roast where the guest of honor is served dinner and teasing insults. I found two great examples of the Roast, one older and one from two years ago. The first is a clip of Groucho Marx at a roast for Johnny Carson.
In the next clip Ricky Gervais opens the 2010, 2011, 2012 Golden Globes with more than a dash of lovely British sarcasm.
Tomorrow in satire ~ juxtaposition.

Satire through the eyes of Twain #HumpDay #Wednesday
Because the world needs more laughs, I’m continuing my Satire Series. If you’ve stumbled across my blog for the first time, do scroll back to read the first posts on the topic. Should you enjoy my eclectic posts, I invite you to subscribe. My interests are broad and varied and topics could be anything.
Satire
Here’s a short recap ~ The word satire owes its roots to the Latin for well-fed as in saturated and sated. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Being well-fed feels good and so does having a good laugh.
There are so many facets to Satire. By necessity I’ve been breaking it down by nuance. Today I’m examining satire in literature — specifically from the mind of Samuel Clemens a.k.a. Mark Twain.
To people who study such things, there’s no doubt about it, American humorist Mark Twain was a moralist of strong opinion. His was the Gilded Age, that period from 1870 to roughly 1900. This was the late Victorian era, a time known for ostentatious pretentiousness. In this era, the industrialist was king, western wealth grew at an unprecedented rate, and social reform was shamefully slow.
Twain Trivia~
The term gilded age, commonly used to describe the conditions in the world in which Samuel Clemens lived, actually comes from the title of a book he penned with another author. The book Gilded Age: A Tale of Today must have had some pretty powerful words to be able to brand an entire age of history. It’s also interesting to note that Clemens borrowed the idea from an earlier satirist named Shakespeare. In the play King John, Shakespeare wrote: “To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, is wasteful and ridiculous excess.”
With this ridiculous gilding of the lily in mind, Mark Twain’s writings satirized the greed and political corruption so common then. His literature is full of his precisely articulated anger and undeniable disillusionment over the happenings in his time. As an example of his refined snark, I offer actor Hal Holbrook’s spot-on impersonation. Using the celebrity’s own writings, he perfectly brings some of Mark Twain’s thoughts to life. You tube has several clips of this accomplished actor having a go at Twain. For a larger sample of literary satire at work, I highly recommend watching them.
Here’s a collection of his satirical pieces narrated by Mike Bennet.
Pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy this very nice collection of stories.
And here’s a full Samuel Clemens’ biography done by the History Channel.

Satire ~ Instrument of Change!
Because the world needs more laughs, I’m continuing on with my Satire Series today. If you’ve stumbled across my blog for the first time, do scroll back to read the first posts on the topic. For today’s post I’m examining satire as a social statement and instrument of change.
When I think of this sort of satire, my mind immediately goes to Garry Trudeau. He’s famous for charting and recording American folly through a comic strip called Doonesbury. Remember his Scientific Penguinism back in the early 1980’s?

© Gary Trudeau
He’s been sketching satire since 1970, minus the hiatus of the last several years. It’s interesting to note that something recently brought him back to the newspapers — the carnival sideshow of presidential candidates in American politics. I’m sure he’ll make a social statement out of that. As far as satire goes, that stuff practically writes itself!
In 1975, Garry Trudeau was the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. He was also a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and the recipient of several prestigious awards bestowed in recognition of his work for wounded soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Satire ~ Political pokings #Mondayblogs
Because the world needs more laughs, I’m continuing on with my Satire Series today. If you’ve stumbled across my blog for the first time, do scroll back to read the first posts on the topic. Being well-fed feels good and so does having a good laugh. There are three main forms of irony found in Satire. So far, we’ve looked at Dramatic Irony and Verbal Irony. For today’s post I’m taking a look at Political pokings.

©Comedy Central
When I began this personal quest for laughs I didn’t realize there were so many facets to the topic. I became interested because literature often uses satire to show foolishness or vice and I’m a writer. I admit I ‘m drawn to it because the late night comedians have had a field day with political satire in the past few weeks. Under the umbrella of free speech and the cloak of their profession, they reach high in their jibs and jabs without repercussion here and elsewhere in the western world. Not long ago a comedian in the Middle East was jailed and later released for his irreverent satire, and a comedian in North Korea was sent to a hard labor camp. It’s sad when people and nations take themselves so seriously they can’t laugh without fear of repercussion. Life can sure be absurd.
One very vocal use of satire is done on the political stage. Interesting to note, the intelligent mocking of ridiculous politicians isn’t a modern art form. (Though we do possess an unusual abundance to work with). William Shakespeare often poked political fun in his plays. When he said “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark” the statement had broader meaning than simply Hamlet’s story. He was referring to sinister dealings in politics. Dealings that although unseen, still obviously reeked.
Benjamin Franklin is credited for the first political cartoon in America. He was always using his wit to charm and disarm. I should devote a blog post to him sometime! Ben and his era may have had their absurdities back then, but I’ll wager it was nothing near what we have today. You’ll see a terrific array of political satire delivered through late night TV. It may offend the sensitive viewer. It just makes me laugh, and for that, I appreciate the brilliance more.
Here’s an interesting (and 35 minute) take on political parody as served up by Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. I miss Jon.

Weekend happenings & unwanted guests
Boy, the season is rapidly changing. That’s too bad. I love when autumn takes its time. The hazel bushes are still colorful but will soon race to see who will drop the last leaf. Rain is on the way and that’s sure to speed things up. The ash tree in the yard is particularly lovely. It’s sad to say but with the emerald ash borer destroying the country’s ash trees, that poor tree is on borrowed time. We’ve had some hard frosts here on the hill. Cold nights and warm days change the oak leaves red and puts an end to the mosquitoes and ticks that robbed joy from my backyard all summer.
If you’ve been to my blog before, you’ll know I occasionally write about my various plagues. That’s really the only word to describe it. The plagues here are almost biblical. The window wells will soon be wriggling with amphibians that have to be relocated. (Picture a large roasting pan full.) Many’s the winter where we had to keep a terrarium because the last critters weren’t discovered until the ground was frozen. I live in a country farmhouse. I know I’ll never win.
I’ve mentioned the mice have come inside and the human/dog/rodent war being waged. I can’t express how I hate killing things that just want to survive on my dime. I have my war with winter mice. I also have summer frogs, autumn toads, snakes, and salamanders, and my spring ants. The latter I leave alone and they eventually stop coming in. Sure freaks out the house guests though. lol Temporary ants are nothing compared to the rest. I once saw a fox snake, a two foot long fox snake, slip under my refrigerator when I walked into the kitchen. Where it went from there I can’t say. I never found it dead or alive! I once got bit by a fox snake in my bookcase that I mistakenly assumed was a rubber toy. Sometime in the near future, I’ll post about the more unusual animals who’ve come into my house uninvited. Sometimes when I tell people about them, my own words are hard to believe, but I swear every word is true. Muskrat in the bedroom, really?? I’ll save this tale for another day. It should be in a book. ;)
Those blasted ladybug mimics are out en masse now. The real ladybugs come out in the spring. These Asian monsters appear this time of year. My family thinks I’m crazy for hunting them with my tools of the trade –a ruler and cup of soapy water which I knock them into so they die. Yes, I know, this statement just contradicted the last paragraph where I said I hated killing things. I just really loathe these bugs in the house. They stink, they bite, they cluster like a nightmare in the corners of the ceiling, and because I write under a ceiling light, they fall on me. There’s nothing worse than having them drop on you, especially when they get inside your shirt and bite. Or you discover one in your hair and it leaves that nasty acrid stink behind. Ick.
I saw something quite cool the other day, a praying mantis hunting on our garage door. The box elder beetles are emerging now and this consummate hunter was snatching them as they landed within “arm’s reach”. Their front legs unfold and *wham* munch.. munch.. munch. Funny thing — I found it midday and planned to show my husband when he came home from work. He came home, opened the door, and said, “Come outside quick, there’s something I want to show you!” I said, “Is it the praying mantis hunting on the garage door?” It was. We know what the other finds interesting. lol
One year I asked him to bring a praying mantis in the house. That’s not as odd as it sounds. Not odd at all as far as people who know me are concerned. lol In some countries a house mantis is kept to eat roaches and whatnot. Asian ladybug mimics being eaten by a pet praying mantis is a very appealing thought. My poor husband picked one up in his bare hands and walked it back to the house. Along the way, it bit the heck out of him. I never did get my house mantis. Maybe I’ll use a net…

Are you being sarcastic? #Thursday
I sure love to laugh, especially with my family and friends. Sharing laughter with loved ones is the best. We tease one another and poke fun just a little, and everyone knows there’s love behind it. Fun times. Because the world needs more laughs, I’m doing a blog series on satire. If you’ve stumbled across my blog for the first time, do scroll back. If you enjoy my eclectic posts, I invite you to subscribe. My interests are broad and varied.
If you don’t know, the word satire owes its roots to the Latin for well-fed as in saturated and sated. Just think on that a moment. Laughter is part of the human condition. Laugh and your soul chows down.
There are three main forms of irony found in Satire. Yesterday we looked at Dramatic Irony. For today’s post I’m taking a look at satire’s ironic side which pokes fun through opposites. This is known as Verbal Irony. Verbal Irony is a trope or figure of speech, in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning the words themselves imply — that is, what you mean is different from what you say. Example: You pull through a drive thru fast food place and the lid isn’t on your cup as tight as it should be. It spills in your lap and you say, “Great, just great!” or “Oh that’s fabulous.” Obviously it’s not.
You’ll often encounter verbal irony if you watch late night comedians. It takes razor wit and depth of intelligence to pull off this type of sarcastic satire. This was the stuff the court jesters did in the days of old.
A few cute examples of Verbal Irony in a clip from the nerdy TV show~

Well-fed on Satire #HumpDay #Wednesday
I miss Jon Stewart. The new guy does a good enough job, but Jon’s age and accumulated wisdom did much to add to his satire. I miss you Jon. You spoke truth wrapped in humor until the truth grew too ugly and uncomfortable to make a joke about. I get it. I wish you and your family much joy in helping animals. What a fine man you are.
Since the world needs more laughs, I’ve decided to do a blog series on satire. The word satire owes its roots to the Latin for well-fed as in saturated. Think about that. Laughter really does feed the soul. If you examine this soul-food you’ll discover three main forms of irony in Satire. And that’s where I’ll begin.
Irony, what is it?
Irony
noun
1. The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.
2. Literature– a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
Today’s post is about Dramatic Irony. What’s that exactly? It’s a form of satire understood by the reader/audience but not grasped by the characters in the play. The result is the reader/audience has a greater knowledge than the characters themselves.
In the old I Love Lucy clip I’ve chosen, we know what’s going to happen with that conveyor belt before Lucy does.

#TuesdayTreat Loads of Laughs
Last week sometime I mentioned satire in one of my posts. Satire comes in a lot of forms and that’s why the satire gets its name from the Latin lanx satura which literally means a full dish of various fruits. I love witty things. In my research and general poking around the web, I’ve found so many juicy tidbits, I thought I’d do an exposé.
I try to walk the dog every day. A writer sitting away the hours writing sets one up for high blood pressure and kidney problems. My companion in this venture is a little couch potato of a terrier. She’s so enthusiastic about getting into the harness for a W-A-L-K, that I often hear her little sounds of happy satisfaction. She certainly grins from ear to ear. Studies show many animals laugh, that is, laugh in their own way. Apparently you can really tell the difference in the primates who hoot and grin when they find something humorous. And being primates ourselves, so do we.
So what exactly is humor for? Some researchers believe it’s part of the social bonding processes we humans have. That makes sense. Camaraderie gets built, efficient hunting follows, the species eats and survives.
As mentioned in my post last week, satire is an ancient practice considered by many as the most trenchant, or incisive, way to observe society. Humans find satire funny because we share the human condition. I don’t need to step on a rake or sit on a tack myself, but I might suppress a chuckle when The Three Stooges do it. Laughter is contagious too! See for yourself. Prepare to grin if not laugh outright.
LOL
So now that we’re laughing and we don’t know why, I’ll give you a heads up…
Tomorrow’s Satire post will be about Dramatic I rony
