Nacido el 11 de octubre de 1882 en Barmen (Wuppertal). Hijo de granjeros. Estudió germanística e historia. Fue narrador, dramaturgo, editor de libros juveniles, traductor de poemas medievales (como el Parzival, Tristán, los Nibelungos) Y prolífico autor.
Desde 1933 primer presidente de la recién fundada Sociedad Paul-Ernst. Editor de la revista Die neue Literatur. Autor de trasfondo protestante. Comprometido políticamente con el nacional socialismo. Padre del escritor Bernward Vesper.
Fallece en Gut Triangel el 11 de marzo de 1962.
