Music in This Book Does Not Exist

Tuesday night, I went to see Best Coast perform at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights. The occasion got me thinking a little bit about the music I referenced in This Book Does Not Exist. Best Coast's debut full length Crazy For You is one of my favorite records of this year, and if I had been writing the first draft of the novel this summer as opposed to the winter of 2008-9, I probably would have mentioned it to some extent. Crazy For You is a bizarre sort of "break up record," as most of it ...

I show off my new (unfortunate?) haircut and talk about writing in the present tense. Philip Pullman, Toni Morrison, and Steven Hall get shout outs.

Obligatory link to my book in the Amazon store.

A short video reaction about how rewarding it's been to be able to get an immediate reaction to what I've written.

As always, further discussion on Twitter and via email (mikejudes@gmail) if so desired.

All my best,

If anybody's used the Arcade Fire's "The Wilderness Downtown" video, you know that it offers you an opportunity to write a postcard. The photo above is the one I made.

The Robot vs the Dinosaur

There has been an almost insufferable amount of press on Jonathan Franzen's new novel Freedom, which will be released on Tuesday. The New York Times Book Review podcast from August 20th had an entire section devoted to the hype that's been surrounding the book. Time put Franzen on the cover. Sam Tanenhaus wrote an extraordinarily lengthy review of the book for last weekend's Book Review, and the novel is addressed again in the August 27th Book Review podcast.

And that's just for starters.

The...

Reviews Reviews Reviews

Hi. A small request … if you've read the book, it would be very kind and helpful of you to jot down a short review on the Amazon page. Even if you didn't buy it or you didn't like it, the idea of starting a conversation about the work could be cool, I think.

Thanks. Hope you guys have a remarkable weekend.

Why I Chose To Name the Protagonist Mike

I've had a couple people ask me why I would attach my first name to a fictional character in my book. Above is my explanation.

Thanks to everybody who's read, or started reading the novel, up to this point. I appreciate all of the positive things that have been said.

Your pal,

Mike

P.S. There's been some confusion, I think, about how to read TBDNE. You do not need to own a Kindle to do so. What Amazon doesn't totally explain well is that you can download an app for your computer (PC or a

My Author Page Is Up

Hey hey,

My author page on Amazon is now up. If you want to read more about my career backstory, you can do so there. Any questions or thoughts, talk to me on Twitter, Facebook, or email (mikejudes@gmail.com).!

Also, I wanted to say that when I decided to write this book, I hoped that it would appeal to people who might not normally read long pieces of fiction. This is another topic altogether, and one that I'll talk about on video in the coming days, but I've seen some evidence that I've...
