Time to summon up the holiday spirit; I’m looking for holiday-themed, heart-touching stories to set the mood. They are hard to find. Giving them a mood setting rating from a 1-star “Treacle” to a 5-star “Uplifting ”

I have also compiled a short list of holiday stories on a Pinterest Board reading list.

Picked up my copy of Phoenix Noir and decided to go dark this week, not my usual inclination or my mood but it’s thought provoking to examine the dark corners occasionally.

Wild Frank’s Return,” by Walt Whitman Story of the Week, a Project of Library of America

Here is another great website that delivers free short stories! Whitman’s prodigal son does not have a happy ending. Replete with moral and ethical insight, no God extends grace and mercy to the pr...

The Awakening, ” The Awakening and Selected Short Stories, by Kate Chopin

365 Short Stories (Tension)—Week Forty-one

tensionTension in literature heightens involvement, plays on uncertainty and contemplates the equilibrium that results from the harmony of opposite tendencies. This week I’m looking for tension in what I read.

Train,” by Alice Munro, Harper’s Magazine April 2012

We are uncertain why Jackson seems so aimless his movements yet so dedicated when he is helping strangers with maintenance projects. One phrase, “She was a certain kind of woman, he a certain kind of man,” sets an expectation. Then the story...

Breathe–contemplate the seen and not seen

I contemplate these things I’ve seen before–but not ever really seen. They tell a story I’ve neverasked to hear.

Likely Lake,” by Mary Robison, Object Lessons: The Paris Review presents The Art of the Short Story

Socially awkward moments reveal our deepest insecurities. What is likely to happen to a man who screwed things up with his ex-wife and is trying desperately to make a go of it with his reluctant girlfriend when a woman he barely knows blurts out that she has a...

Lisa Copeland on Recording The Sheep Walker’s Daughter

Lisa Copeland

Lisa Copeland

Lisa Copeland is recording the audio book version of The Sheep Walker’s Daughter. Read about her experience, the recording process, what it takes to succeed at recording books, and hear a sample of her work.

How did you get into recording audio books?

My husband has had a recording studio for years. He made radio and television commercials. After we got married, I started doing voice work for him.

We travel the country in a motor home and were looking for new ways to support our “di...

365 Short Stories (scenes)—Week Thirty-Nine

Scenes are the building blocks of stories. Favorite scenes stay with you, even when you’ve forgotten the title, author and plot of a story.

The Signature of All Things,” by Elizabeth Gilbert, One Story

From Gilbert’s novel coming out in October, this excerpt introduces Alma, a product of over-educated parents. My favorite scene is where an astronomer arranges party guests into a solar system, sets them in orbit and assigns Alma the role of a comet. Try that at your...
