Beauty and the Beast

As you read in my prior posts, I’ve always had a fondness for Disney’s animated features, probably because I grew up watching them. Of course, when you’re a kid, you don’t really think about the story. You just watch and enjoy. I ended up re-watching Beauty and the Beast a few years back, just because I wanted to relive the childhood wonder I felt when I watched it for the first time. I was not disappointed.

No wonder Beauty and the Beast was the first ever animated feature film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. It didn’t win, but that doesn’t matter. Just the nomination was a huge feat on its own.
This charming tale was based on an old French fairy tale. Its main theme is change, or more specifically, how love can change someone both on the inside and on the outside.

I’m sure most of you have seen it, so I’m not going to go into plot details. Instead, I’ll tell you why I loved it.

There are a couple of reasons.

1. Disney’s innocence – If there is one secret to the success of Walt Disney’s films, it’s being able to provide wholesome family entertainment (with no sex, violence or swearing) and to bring adults back to the wonderment of being a child. All Disney movies have this innate quality in them and it’s very attractive to kids but especially to adults. Beauty and the Beast has this quality.

2. The message behind the story was particularly attractive. It appeals to people’s fantasies. The message is basically that love can conquer all and change someone for the better. It’s an awfully romantic notion and I don’t know how often this can happen in real life, but in a movie, it’s cinematic magic. Who doesn’t want to believe in rainbows and sunshine and the good in people? Who doesn’t want to believe that love can change someone for the better, just like how Belle’s pure love for the Beast broke the spell he was under and changed him back into a human prince. All great movies have great messages behind them that appeal to most people and that’s what makes them successes. Of course, it also helped that Beauty and the Beast had a quirky, supporting cast in it, to entertain children who might not understand the hidden, deeper meaning of the film.

Fav scene
I’m sure you’ve already guessed by now, but I loved the ballroom scene, where Belle dances with the Beast and Mrs. Potts sings the theme song. It’s a classic scene in a classic movie. This is a critical scene because we are now at a point in Beauty and the Beast’s relationship where they begin to trust each other, and even to fall in love.

As one of my philosophies of love stories, I said that it’s very important for the director to show us why the two lovers fall in love and it’s done well in this film. The Beast likes Belle because she’s the first woman not to be repulsed by his haggard appearance (she doesn’t shudder at his paw) and Belle sees something sweet and loving in the Beast, although he is a beast in appearance. The message is clear: don’t judge someone by their physical appearance. A handsome man like Gaston could turn out to be an ugly man inside (and he is), and an ugly beast could turn out to be gentle, loving and caring (and the Beast is). It’s a wonderful message for children and adults alike.

Soundtrack
Disney movies are known for their artistic and creative songs and there are tons in this film. From its main theme (sung by my favorite singer Celine Dion) to Human Again to Be Our Guest, the songs kept me entertained and enhanced the romantic message in the film.

Conclusion
Beauty and the Beast will go down in history as a Disney classic, with good reason too.

Rating: 9/10 (Excellent, Rare quality work)
1. Did you like this movie?
2. What rating would you give it?
3. Which other animated features do you like?
