Kaylee answers (and a winner is drawn)!
Kaylee has answered your questions! Some of them, anyway. As with the previous four characters, there just wasn't time to answer all of the awesome questions she received, so I picked the ones she most wanted to discuss. Next summer, we'll do it again and allow If I Die spoilers just in time for Before I Wake, which is currently scheduled for July, 2012. (I'm hoping to have a cover soon.)
For now, the randomly drawn winner of a set of five signed Soul Screamers books and a Kaylee-quote t-shirt is:
khn21 who commented on October 4, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Khn21, please email me (rachelkvincentATgmailDOTcom) with your shipping information and t-shirt size, and I'll put your prizes in the mail.
Confession: I haven't shipped any of the t-shirt prizes yet. But they will go out soon. The Emma, Sabine, and Tod shirts are designed, but we're still working on the Nash and Kaylee shirts. In case you haven't seen them, here're the ones we have so far:
These and more are available at cost (we make no profit from them) here.
And now, Kaylee answers...
Thanks so much to everyone who followed the If I Die blog tour! A grand prize winner will be announced soon, but it's not to late to enter. Click here for details. And thanks again to everyone who asked the characters questions during this past month! It's been a blast.
Next week, we will resume giveaways of the foreign editions currently taking up too much space in my office... ;)

And now, Kaylee answers...
william says: Kaylee, With everything that has happened to you now that you know what you are; do you wish you would have stayed ignorant to it?
Kaylee: No. If I never found out what I am, I would have continued to think I’m crazy, and my abilities wouldn’t have been any use to anyone else.
Dalia says: Kaylee: When Tod asked you to help him to save Addy’s soul he didn’t think twice about putting your life in danger to accomplish what he wanted. […] When Nash became addicted to Frost his decision making was effected by the drug. You’ve made the statement that when someone is under an influence like that they aren’t in their right mind (as with the situation with Mr. Beck). Why, then, were you able to fogive Tod, but not Nash?
Kaylee: I’m not sure why everyone keeps saying that. I did forgive Nash. I know he didn’t do any of that on purpose. But forgetting—trusting—is a much more complicated issue. It’s not as easy as snapping my fingers.
[The rest of Kaylee's answer is in the Wordpress post, in white, because it felt a little spoilery to me. Highlight below if you want to see it.]
Gabby says: Kaylee, if you could go back to that night at the bar when you actually met Nash, would you still want to have met him, even with everything that’s happened since then?
Kaylee: Yes, of course! I wouldn’t give up these past months with Nash for anything. He was the first person to be truly honest with me about who and what I am. No matter what happens next, I wouldn’t undo meeting him. Or loving him. And I hope he feels the same.
Vivien says: Kaylee: If you could undo Nash getting exposed to Demon Breath, would you? Or do you think that adds to his character?
Kaylee: Of course I would. I would never wish what he’s gone through on anyone, even if that would change some of the good things that came after. If those good things were meant to be, they would come about eventually, one way or another.
Kelli Wilson says: Kaylee: If you could find your mom in the afterlife and ask her one question, what would it be?
Kaylee: I would ask her if she ever regrets her decision.
Nicole W. says: Kaylee, do you ever feel guilty about living your mom’s life even though it wasn’t your choice to?
Kaylee: Every single day.
Marie R says: Why didn’t you insist on Nash cutting Sabine out of his life when he offered to get back with you?
Kaylee: Because that wouldn’t have been fair. I made it clear where I stood about her personally, and about what she was trying to do. But I don’t have the right to tell him who to be friends with. The opposite is also true.
Sarita Lopez says: Kaylee, You yourself realized that Sabine really is good for Nash. Why didn’t you just let her be with him?? Was it because you just didn’t want to lose or were you only thinking about yourself and not about what Nash needs?!
Kaylee: People keep asking this one too, but I think you’re all glossing over the most important fact here: who Nash decides to be with isn’t up to me. It’s not up to Sabine either. That’s Nash’s decision. Even if I’d wanted to “let Sabine have him,” it wouldn’t have been that simple. He chose me. That was his call.
Sarah M. says: Kaylee, do you think that you and Sophie will ever get along and why do you think she dislikes you so much?
Kaylee: I don’t think she dislikes me. I think I’m simply in her way.
Michele-Venessa Neubauer says: Kaylee, Do you think if you and Sabine didn’t both want Nash that you and her would have been or could be friends?
Kaylee: I doubt Sabine and I ever would have met, without Nash pulling us together.
Amy says: Hi Kaylee! You always give a lot of thought to the emotions swirling in Nash’s gorgeous eyes. However, what do you make of Tod’s emotions and his sudden inability to keep his eyes from swirling when around you?
Kaylee: I don’t know. Isn’t that weird?
Nicole S. says: If you could bring back any of these people who would you choose? Your mom, your aunt, or Addison??
Kaylee: My mom.
Camille says: Kaylee, do you hate your father for leaving you behind for 13 years?
Kaylee: No. I could never hate my dad. I don’t have much hate in me, honestly. Except for Avari. I hate him completely.
Maria C says: Kaylee, Alec has been in Avari’s tender mercies for all those years, and you really hardly know him. if you find out that he did something unforgivable to survive, what would you do?
Kaylee: I would sympathize and try to help him forgive himself. Alec is a really good guy. If he’s done something wrong to save himself, it’s killing him on the inside. I can say that without any doubt.
bobby says: was there ever a moment when you viewed Alec in a romantic way?
Kaylee: No. He’s very much a brother figure. Maybe like an uncle. He’s old and kinda wise, you know.
Kimberley S. says: Kaylee, do you ever think that everything was ruined by that balloon with demon’s breath popping in Nash’s face and that if that hadn’t happened you and Nash would still be a “perfect couple”?
Kaylee: I honestly don’t know. Sometimes I think that popped balloon was the most tragic thing to happen to our relationship. But then I realize that that pop was an accident. The real tragedy was in the decisions we made. Both of us. We both messed up. It’s not what happens to you that really matters. It’s how you handle the fallout. Don’t you think?
Zella Jewett says: Do you ever think your relationship with Nash and his family would be different if Todd never died and became a reaper? If so, how do you think that it would be different?
Kaylee: If Tod had never died, Nash and his mom never would have moved to my town, and I never would have met any of them. Sometimes wonderful things come out of tragedy. That’s what I keep telling myself, anyway…

Check this out!
There are so many things I should say in this post. I should remind you that this is the last week of If I Die release madness and that you can scroll down to ask Kaylee a question and be entered to win this week's giveaway. I should tell you how awesome my appearances in Houston and Seattle were. I should tell you how I'm revising Before I Wake and doing copy edits on the new Soul Screamers novella. But instead, I'm just going to show you this one piece of awesome. Because it is AWESOME.
Mira Ink, who publishes the Soul Screamers series in the UK, has just shown me the UK ebook cover for My Soul To Steal. And it's the coolest thing I've seen all year.
In case you can't see it, the UK MSTSteal cover is ANIMATED. The butterfly flies in and lands on Kaylee's shoulder, the quote swoops into place, and the fog rolls! This is SO COOL! This version comes out in the UK on October 21, and I'm so excited!
I have no idea how this will work on various ereaders, and all I can do is direct you to the Mira Ink Facebook page, where you can ask any questions you have. But in the mean time...sit back and watch the butterfly land. I'll be watching it all day. ;)

Ask Kaylee! (And a winner is announced!)
I apologize for the delay in announcing the winner of last week's giveaway and posting this week's. I spent the weekend out of town, speaking and signing at Murder by the Book in Houston and at the Seattle stop on the Smart Chicks tour. Which means there are now signed Soul Screamers books at both stores (Powell's, in Seattle), and I know that Murder by the Book will ship world-wide, if you want one.
Also, if you missed the last couple of stops on the If I Die blog tour, there's an interview with Nash here and there's a Soul Screamers quiz here.
And, the winner of last week's giveaway (a signed set of five Soul Screamers books and a Nash quote t-shirt) is:
Justine, who commented at September 28, 2011 at 12:17 pm and said, "Nash, if you had the chance to get out of this messy love triangle by not meeting either Kaylee or Sabine, who would you choose to never had met?"
Justine, please email me (rachelkvincentATgmailDOTcom) with your shipping information and your t-shirt size, and I'll put your prizes in the mail.
This is the last of five straight weeks of If I Die release madness! Each week you’ll get a chance to ask one of the five major Soul Screamers characters a question in the corresponding Wordpress post. That question will be your entry in the week’s drawing. That week’s character will answer a handful of the questions on Friday, but even if your question isn’t answered, you will be entered in the drawing.
The winner will be announced on Friday’s post.
This week’s character is: Kaylee.
[Questions containing spoilers from If I Die will be deleted. The book has only officially been out for a week, so many people haven't read it yet. However, there is a spoilerific discussion thread on Facebook, and I'll be revamping my discussion group very soon and we'll have more spoilery stuff there too.]
The rules:

But please be aware that the questions MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS (from any story except If I Die). If you live outside of the US but have someone stateside willing to pass your prizes on to you, you’re welcome to enter and make those arrangements privately. But this time I can only ship to US residences. I apologize to the international readers and hope you understand. You may ask a question even if you don’t wish to be entered in the drawing. Please allow 3+ weeks for shipping.Void where prohibited by law.If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent’s permission to enter.

The day after...
I'm both floored and thrilled with the response If I Die has gotten so far, and I can't say enough thank yous to those who've already hunted down a copy. Reviews like this and this have kept me smiling for two days. If your store doesn't have their shipment yet or has run out, you can always ask if they'll order it for you. Most book stores are happy to do that, and some can even have it shipped directly to your home.
If you missed it, yesterday's If I Die blog tour stop was at the Harlequin Paranormal romance blog, where my editor interviewed me. It was my editor's enthusiasm for My Soul To Take that got the Soul Screamers ball rolling, so I feel like she has a unique perspective on the subject.
And if you haven't asked Nash a question yet to enter this week's Soul Screamers prize pack give away (a signed set of the first five Soul Screamers books + Nash quote t-shirt), click here for instructions. Today's the last day. Tomorrow, Nash will be answering some questions and the winner will be announced.
This weekend, I'll be at Murder By The Book on Saturday at 1 pm, signing both Blood Bound and If I Die, then on Sunday I'll be at the Smart Chicks YA tour stop at Northwest Book Fest. If you come to either event, you can get a Shadow Bound post card, which features the Shadow Bound cover. Which I'm not planning to post online for another month.
I hope to see you there!
And...here's the Smart Chicks schedule for Northwest Bookfest (Which I've shamelessly stolen from Jeri Smith-Ready's blog. Because I'm lazy and she's already done the work. ;))

Release day!
If I Die is out today!!!!! At least, if you're in the US or Canada. If you're not, I'm sorry for the wait. And I suggest that you avoid reviews for a couple of months, because this book is super-spoilery. Or...you could order a copy from the Book Depository, with free shipping, then join in the spoiler discussions!
On today's If I Die blog tour stop, Mundie Moms has a piece I wrote called "A Day in the AfterLife of Tod." This was Rachel Clarke's idea, back during the YA Crush Tourney. It was supposed to be an incentive for people to vote for Tod, but I never got to post it, because Jeri Smith-Ready's Scottish boy won by a hair, at the very last minute. Literally. But I kept working on the piece, and now you can read it, for a glimpse of an average day from our favorite reaper's POV.
But, with that, Tod is stepping out of the spotlight for a bit. He's feeling a bit overexposed (he isn't used to people seeing him) and it's really Kaylee's story, so we'll hear from her next week.
Anyway, stop by the Mundie Moms to read the piece and enter both giveaways.
And if you haven't already entered this week's giveaway here, click here for instructions on how you can enter to win a set of five signed Soul Screamers books and a Nash-quote t-shirt.
And...if you've already bought your copy of If I Die , I'd love to hear where you got it and what format you got it in!

Upcoming appearances; Ask Nash
The fifth Soul Screamers book comes out tomorrow! That's right,
If I Die
will officially hit shelves all over the US and Canada one day from today! (Though you may have to wait until Oct. 1 for the ebook.)
Coincidentally, the Smart Chicks YA tour also begins tomorrow, with the launch in Memphis, Tennessee. If you haven't already, click here to check out the Smart Chicks schedule and see if there will be a stop on the tour near you!
To celebrate the release of If I Die (and last month's release of Blood Bound) I'll be making two appearances in the next week. This Saturday, Oct 1, I'll be speaking and signing both Blood Bound and If I Die at 1 PM at Murder by the Book in Houston. This is from the website:
I think that means you can order a signed copy of one of my books (they also have lots of books signed by lots of other authors) and have it shipped to you, if you can't make it to the signing.
After the Houston signing, I'll be flying to Seattle for the Smart Chicks event at Northwest Book Fest.

Today's blog tour stop is at Chasing Words, where Kaylee and Sabine were supposed to be interviewing one another. As you might expect, the interview devolves. And there's subtext. ;) Head on over there for instructions for how to enter both the daily prize (two copies of

) and the grand prize (a Nook touch loaded with the complete to-date Soul Screamers series).
And... the If I Die trailer premiered this morning! Surprise! It was a surprise to me too. Number one and I didn't make this one, so HQTeen gets all the credit.

Enthralled! (And Rachel talks about Nash.)
Today is the official release day for Enthralled!
As I've mentioned before, my story "Niederwald" is a Soul Screamers story featuring Emma and Sabine alone on a roadtrip. During which they bond. Kind of. They survive, anyway.
This anthology is also packed full of stories from wonderful YA writers (I'm thrilled to have been included!), some set in their existing series' worlds, others introducing brand new worlds and characters. If you like YA, pick this one up today!
Yesterday was the first stop on the IF I DIE blog tour, with an interview and give away at The Story Siren (who reviewed books 3, 4, and 5 here--scroll down). The winner of yesterday's giveaway is Minnah Prufer, whose entry was a question for me, which I've answered below, because my response was too long to fit into a status update on Facebook.
Don't forget, the blog tour continues tomorrow, when Kaylee and Sabine interview one another. And there will be more prizes! Click below for the complete blog tour schedule.

Minnah's Question: Despite what it seems like most people, I actually kind of like Nash. In My Soul to Steal, a ton of crap happens to him, mostly on his own accord though. Did you always plan on putting him through all that and how hard was it for you to put that on him?
Rachel says: I’ve wanted to discuss Nash for quite a while now, and your question has given me the opportunity I was looking for. So thanks!
I like Nash too. Nash is troubled, and the truth is that he's been troubled for quite a while. He lost both his father and older brother, and afterward in both cases, he was moved away from the house/town that held memories of lost loved ones. He also recently lost his two best friends, one to death, the other to a mental institution, so in spite of his remaining family and friends, he’s feeling lost and lonely right now.
He's always been prone to addiction and dependency, which he first experienced along with his first love, an obsessive, co-dependent relationship with Sabine, which neither of them has been able to completely put behind them. Nash feels everything (love, loss, pleasure, pain) very deeply and often has trouble making sense of the things he’s feeling, so his emotions tend to get all tumbled together, like shoes in the dryer. He doesn’t want to be judged, so when he needs help, he tends to look for it in the wrong places. Which only complicates his problems. But he’s trying. And he always will try, because Nash is a good guy.
As for whether or not I planned to put him through all that…Well, my process doesn’t really work like that. It’s not that I piled problems onto him. It’s that I discovered them as I dug deeper into his character. This is who Nash is, and like real people, he was influenced by both nature and nurture. Will he ever go back to being the good student and gifted athlete we first met in My Soul To Take? I don’t know. He hasn’t lost any of that potential, and academics and athletics are both healthier outlets than some of the other options available to him. But in the end, that’s all up to Nash.

What would you ask Tod?
First, a note: The official If I Die blog tour (run by Kismet Blog Tours and sponsored by Harlequin Teen) begins today with an interview by The Story Siren. And a double giveaway! To enter the 1st giveaway, you'll be asked to go answer a question posted on the Soul Screamers Facebook page. To preempt any confusion, that's the question posed by Danny Kismet. You may have to click "everyone" at the top of the page to see the question.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled character Q&A...
This is week three of five straight weeks of If I Die release madness!
This week’s character is: Tod, the reaper.
[Questions containing spoilers from If I Die will be deleted. Few people have had the chance to read that book yet, because it isn't officially released yet.]
The rules:
One question/entry per person. So think carefully. Also, read through what’s already been asked, to avoid duplicate questions. But please be aware that the questions MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS (from any story except If I Die). If you haven’t read the first four books and both available novellas, you may want to scroll past the questions without reading them and leave yours in the comment box. Repeat questions will still count as entries, but if the character answers a question asked more than once, the first person who asked will be credited in the response. Because of astronomical shipping costs and the size, weight, and number of the prizes, I will only be able to ship to US addresses. Please allow 3+ weeks for shipping. Void where prohibited by law. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent’s permission to enter.
This week’s prize: A signed set of the first five Soul Screamers novels. Assorted swag including an If I Die bookmark and an Enthralled postcard. A Soul Screamers t-shirt featuring a Tod quote.
We are designing a new Tod shirt for this contest, to match the other stick-figure shirts, but it's not quite ready yet. To see the others available, click here.
Okay, if you have a question for Tod, leave it in the corresponding Wordpress post!

Sabine talks back...
Okay, the random number generator has spoken, and the winner of this week's set of signed Soul Screamers books and a Sabine quote t-shirt is:
Sarah, who's comment in the original post was timestamped: September 12, 2011 at 5:18 pm (Sara also asked the puppy question)
Sarah, please email me (rachelkvincentATgmailDOTcom) to claim your prize.
Previous winners, please note: I am behind on shiping prizes, but they will all go out very, very soon.
Thanks so much to all those who submitted a question for Sabine. As it turns out, she likes to talk, so she's answered quite a few of them below. And I do apologize in advance for some of her answers. Sabine was highly amused by the number of people who asked her what she's afraid of (answer: nothing she'd admit to perfect strangers) and the number of people who told her to back off and let Kaylee have Nash in peace (her answer was not fit for a PG-rated blog).
Next week's character is: Tod!
Tod tends to be a popular character to interview, so he's already done a couple of these, but I'm looking forward to the questions you guys come up with.

And now, Sabine answers your questions:
Heather: Sabine, What was your early childhood really like?
Sabine: Bizarre rituals with robed, masked figures, weird music, and fire.
Kidding.
Diapers. Finger food. Sticky messes. I was the scariest thing in most of my early foster homes.
HARioux: If you could put anything on a t-shirt, what would it say or be?
Sabine: It would say, “Stop talking. You’re hemorrhaging stupidity.”
AmyS.: Sabine, how do you really feel about Kaylee, is she more an friend now rather than an enemy?
Sabine: Kaylee was never an enemy. She’s just in my way.
Viki S.: Hey Sabine do you think if you’d been raised by someone like Nash’s mom you’d be able to handle being a mara better or do you think it is what it is?
Sabine: So…are you saying I’m not handling it well on my own?
Sarah: Sabine, what do you think of your “puppy” that Harmony got you? If memory serves, you weren’t too pleased about it when first presented with it.
Sabine: Turns out that particular breed of mutt absorbs some of its master’s personality traits. We get along great. She one vicious b#$%@.
Bell colella: Question: are u really so bad????
Sabine: I'm a joy to behold.
Julie: Hey Sabine, Have you ever used the quote, “in your dreams”?
Sabine: Have I ever said, “in your dreams?” Well, I have now.
Renee: Sabine, if you ruled the world, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Sabine: Outlaw the color pink. And glitter pens.
Jennifer Sorrells Phyfe: Sabine – have you ever considered going total vigilante/heroine and deliberately getting thrown in prison or living close to one so that you could feed from and terrorize those who deserve it most?
Sabine: I figure that day’s coming. Why rush it?
Melody Prim Colyer: Sabine, do u think u should be with another mara? dont u think u would have more in common?
Sabine: Probably. But there are no male maras, and I’m not into girls.
Nicole Arellano: Sabine, If you had to choose a song to describe you what would it be and why?
Sabine: I don’t do self-analysis.
Crystal M.: Sabine, have you ever given Nash a nightmare?
Sabine: No, but he’s given me several. You may know one of them. She’s about five-five, brown hair, blue eyes. Voice like the sound monkey makes when it’s being stabbed to death.
Caryn Glasgow: Sabine, just one question…why are you such a bitch?
Sabine: Right back at’cha.
Victoria Lynn: Sabine, if Kaylee was dying, and Nash needed you to help save her would you do it?
Sabine: Yes. It’s much harder to compete with a dead girlfriend than an ex-girlfriend.
Jeanny: Sabine […] are you secretly jealous of Kaylee?
Sabine: I am openly jealous of Kaylee. She has what used to be mine.
Kailey Steward: Do you love Nash enough to give him up, knowing how much he’s in love with Kaylee?
Sabine: I love him enough to want what’s best for him. And that’s not Kaylee.
