Can You Hear the Whispers?

I’m so excited! Now you can actually hear Whispers at Moonrise. Macmillan Audio has released the digital audiobook. I was skeptical because I hear Kylie’s voice in my head. I hear all my character’s voices for that matter. I was worried Kylie wouldn’t sound like she does in my head. So, when I received a preview clip, I was a bit worried. But I have to tell you, I am very pleased. Katie Schorr, the narrator does a great job. She has Kylie’s voice and inflection down. I’m so pleased! And soon, Born at Midnight, Awake at Dawn and Taken at Dusk will also be available on audio book.
So, I am sharing a clip of Whispers at Moonrise here.
Whispers at Moonrise, web clip
Whispers at Moonrise is available as a digital audiobook at iTunes, Audible.com, etc. So, can you hear the whispers? Thanks to the audiobook, you now can.

Happy Halloween!

[image error]Happy Halloween, everyone! I love this time of year. I decorate my house with jack-o-lanterns, spider webs and ghosts. The first two things don’t really bother me, but the ghosts? Well, they give me the heebee geebees! Probably because I had a very weird experience with ghosts. Want to hear my story? I previously posted this as a guest blog on Confessions of a Bookaholic, but I’ll repost it here.
The Little Girl No One Cried For
I was thirteen and I woke up that morning with sunshine spilling through my window. I stretched my hands over my head and it hit me—the memory of a dream I’d just had came rushing back. There had been no sunshine in the dream.
It was spooky, but more strange and sad. Like an old movie, I could still see it playing in my mind. But unlike a movie, my memory came with all five senses. The smell of wet earth and the scent of a storm brewing somewhere close by. I could feel the wind hit my face, blowing my blonde hair across my eyes. Tombstones, aged and cracked, littered the ground around me. All was silent—deadly silent.
[image error]A small group of people stood quietly by a gravesite. All wearing black. Even the sky held a dismal shade of sadness. There seemed to be no color in the image—no joy, all drab and gray. I stared at the faces of those grieving people. Did I know them? Yes, but . . . vaguely. And from where?
Immediately, my gaze shifted to the casket. The tiny polished box carried the only color in the scene. A bright pink ribbon rested on top. My gaze shot back to the people again. They weren’t crying. For some reason that seemed odd. They needed to cry. Cry for the child who obviously lay tucked inside that casket. The child who would never run and play and who would never know life.
I studied the faces of the people again, trying to remember where I’d seen them. How could I know them when they looked so out of place? Like people from old pictures. People from another time, another life.
And then came the realization. The woman dressed in a thick black wool coat, hugging herself against the cold and staring at the casket with empty emotion, was my grandmother, but younger. A lot younger. The woman today was old, in her late sixties. But yes, I remembered seeing her younger face in family photo albums.
Then, I recognized the other people. My mom and dad when they were young. My grandfather and one of my uncles. My gaze shifted from one person to the next.
Then it went to the casket.
Who had died? Part of the answer came with the next cold whisk of wind: A baby. A baby girl.
I wanted to tell someone how sorry I was. Emotion built in my chest. A crazy thought hit. Someone needed to cry for the child. I stood back from the crowd, not really present, but somehow still there. I felt the odd sadness. But why weren’t they crying?
Then my grandmother, my mom, dad and uncle were gone. As if they’d vanished into the air. I saw the casket being lowered into the gaping chasm. Abruptly the dream changed and I saw the gravestone. It simply read, Our baby girl: Christie.
Christie? CHRISTIE? That was my name. How could the baby have my name? That’s when I’d woken up. My heart still thumped against my breastbone at the memory, and I had tears in my eyes. Not wanting to be alone, I went and found my mom cooking breakfast.
I told her about the dream, about the casket with the pink ribbon and seeing my name on the gravestone.
I saw shock hit my mom’s face. “What is it?” I asked, but was almost scared for her to answer.
“This is weird.”
“What?”
“Your grandmother got pregnant a few months after your dad and I were married. It was a girl. She only lived a few weeks. You were named after her.”
The spookiness tiptoed up my spine as chills skittered up my neck. I looked at my mom and asked, “Why didn’t anyone cry?” Suddenly, I burst into tears.
My mom’s faced paled even more. “Your grandma told everyone no tears. She said she couldn’t handle the tears. We weren’t allowed to cry.”
I dropped down into a kitchen chair and asked the question burning inside me. “How could I have dreamed this?”
“I’m sure you heard the story,” Mom said.
“When? When could I have heard the story? I swear I never knew about her before now.”
“I don’t know, but you had to have heard it. How else would you have known this?”
How else?
[image error]To this day I think about that dream. I think about the little girl, my namesake. Did I really hear someone tell that story and my mind simply played it back as a dream? Or did the spirit of Christie somehow visit me? Did she need me to know about her? Did she need someone to cry for her?
I guess you see why my Shadow Falls series involves ghosts. There’s a part of me that believes in them. What about you? Do you believe in ghosts?
Last Week’s Winners
Boy, do I ever have some wonderful multi-lingual readers! As I said last week, I speak English and Spanish, but some of you speak three, four or even more languages. Very impressive! Anyway, the two winners of the German copies of Whispers at Moonrise are Brooklyn Gotelaere and Tiara. Please email your mailing address to cc@cchunterbooks.com. Congratulations!

Under Cover

I get a lot of wonderful emails. Thank you so much—to all of you. Many of you write to tell me how much you like my books or to ask me questions. And I’m always surprised when I get emails from Brazil, The Netherlands, Australia or other faraway places. They have read my books, or at least one or two of them, because they are released later in other countries. I still can’t believe my books have been translated into so many languages. It is so exciting when my publisher sends me a foreign cover for one of my books. You may have seen this cover of Born at Midnight from Denmark from my website Book page.
Earlier this month, a friend of mine was at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany and was kind enough to send me a few photos of my books on display there. What a thrill to see shelves full of Born at Midnight, or should I say Geboren um Mitternacht. I wish I could have gone to the book fair, but as I said in last week’s blog, I was a little busy finishing up Chosen at Nightfall. Oh well, there’s always next year….
My friend also sent me a close up photo of the German Born at Midnight cover, and the cover of Awake at Dawn, otherwise known as Erwacht im Morgengrauen. And just this week, another reader sent me the French version of Taken at Dusk. In France, it seems all of the books in the series are called Born at Midnight or Nes a Minuit, but are labeled books 1, 2, 3, etc. I wanted to share them with you.
The foreign covers are all very similar to the US versions, but how are they different? If you look closely, you’ll see the subtle changes. Well, yeah, the German Born at Midnight cover is the same, but what about the others? So, do any of you speak German? How about any other languages? I speak Spanish.
To celebrate the upcoming release in Germany of Awake at Dawn, which I think is out in December, I’ll give a signed German copy of Born at Midnight along with a Shadow Falls bag and some other goodies to two people who leave a comment. If you are reading this on Goodreads, please post your comment at www.cchunterbooks.comin order to win. US residents only, please.

Endings—and Beginnings

[image error]Okay, it’s finished. There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but I have finished Chosen at Nightfall, the final book in my Shadow Falls series. Let me tell you, Kylie gets herself in a whole heap of trouble, and I wasn’t sure how or if she was going to get herself out of it. But, smart girl that she is, she surprised me and came out the other side. However, everything has a cost, and this was no exception. As for the choice between Derek or Lucas, it was tough, and someone gets their heart broken. I can’t say who because my editor would kill me. And besides, as I have said before, I’m no spoiler.
What I can tell you is this. In this last trek of her journey she finds a new enemy, deals with a spirit who has blood on her hands. And she is presented with something from the death angels, and in the end, she discovers that anything is possible.
It was very emotional to write “The End” and say goodbye to Kylie, Lucas, Derek, Miranda, Della, Holiday, Burnett, Perry, and the others. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and Kylie had finally completed her journey. I cried—a lot, not just at the end, but throughout the book. I also laughed, too, and I hope you will as well. So, even though it will be a while until Chosen at Nightfall is released, it is now finished and in the hands of my publisher. I will post a countdown on my website Home page, soon.
What’s next for me? Well, did I mention I already have a contract for another series with St. Martins? I can’t give out a whole lot of details just yet. Oh, boy, I’m keeping all kinds of secrets, aren’t I? Sorry. However, I can say that I think you will find all the things you love about Shadow Falls in the new series: a unique paranormal world, characters you can easily fall in love with, a book about friendships and family, hot guys, lots of emotion, and tons of laughter. I had a blast writing the proposal and I can’t wait to get started on it. So keep checking my blog because I will be able to tell you more as I get into this next series.
Last Week’s Winners
As for last week’s blog on Holiday and Burnett, overall, Holiday #1 was the favorite and Burnett #4 barely beat out #3. The winners of the two t-shirts are Josie Taylor and Michelle Pope. Congratulations! So, email me at cc@cchunterbooks.com with your mailing address AND your t-shirt size.

Appearances

Whispers at Moonrise has been out a whole week, and I know a lot of you have already read it. I’ve gotten loads of emails and comments on Facebook. So, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I love hearing from you.
We had a lot of fun a few weeks ago when I asked you to vote on how you thought Miranda and Della looked. So, I thought we’d try it again. But this time, I’m going to ask you to vote on the images that most look like your idea of Holiday and of Burnett. Now we know Holiday has long red hair and that she’s a Fae. Burnett, well, we don’t have a lot to go on about his looks. He is a vampire and he’s obviously hot, right? Hmm…you’ll have to see if any of these photos fit your image of Burnett. I’ll pick two people who leave a comment and give each of them a Shadow Falls t-shirt.
First, here are four images of Holiday. Which one most closely fits your image of her?
Holiday #1 Holiday#2
[image error]
Holiday #3 Holiday #4
[image error] [image error]
Now how about the serious vampire Burnett, who works for the FRU. Who most closely fits your idea of what he looks like?
Burnett #1 Burnett #2
[image error] [image error]
Burnett#3 Burnett#4
[image error] [image error]
Okay, tell me who you’d pick for Holiday and Burnett. And remember I will randomly select two people who leave a comment and each will win a Shadow Falls t-shirt. Don’t forget, if you are reading this on Goodreads, you must go to www.cchunterbooks.com to post your comment to win. Sorry, US residents only.
Winners
Now for last week’s five winners of the Shadow Falls t-shirts and promotional packs of pens, bookmarks and pads. 1)Arlene L. 2) Essie B. 3) Connie Trinh 4) Dinnie and 5) Katie Zeleski. The winners need to email me at cc@cchunterbooks.com with your mailing address and t-shirt size. Congratulations!

Whispers at Moonrise!

It’s here! The big day is FINALLY here! You know what I’m talking about. It is release day for Whispers at Moonrise. Thanks for waiting so patiently for this day. But you don’t have to wait any longer.
So what happens in Whispers at Moonrise? Those of you who follow me on Facebook and Twitter have been getting my list of things you’ll learn in Whispers at Moonrise, but I’ll post it here for those who haven’t seen it.
1. Kicking your boyfriend’s father’s butt might not be good for the relationship.
2. Sometimes following your heart means breaking some rules.
3. Getting trapped in a grave with three dead girls is not a walk in the park.
4. Your parents breaking up sucks. Your mom having a boyfriend, and kissing him in front of you, sucks BIG TIME.
5. When your boyfriend says one thing, but does another, what do you believe? His actions or his words?
6. You can’t always protect the ones you love. Sometimes the only way to protect them is to tell them the truth—even if it hurts.
7. When you are in love, you usually want to talk a lot more about your boyfriend than your girlfriends care to hear.
8. You shouldn’t mess with magic if you don’t know what you’re doing. Especially when someone could end up sterile.
9. Sometimes it is the little choices we make, and not the big ones, that define who we are.
10. Be careful what you wish for or you might end up turning a bright shade of red in the boys’ bathroom.
Okay, but what about for those that know all that? Hmmm…looks like I may have to reveal a few more things. Like Kylie learns that there is a bit of magic in all of us. And when someone is willing to kill for you, they just might not be the enemy you thought them to be. I could say more, but I think it would be better if you just read the book.
To celebrate the release of Whispers at Moonrise, I will be appearing at a number of places for signings and talks. So, here is my schedule, but keep in mind, I will probably be adding to this list. I will keep you updated on Facebook and Twitter. I hope many of you can attend. I’d LOVE to meet you!

Are you ready for Whispers at Moonrise?

Only one week until the release of Whispers at Moonrise! Are you ready? Are you dying to find out what will happen? What new powers will Kylie discover? Will Holiday and Burnett learn to trust each other? Will Lucas obey his pack and dump Kylie? Hmmm… Lots of questions, but I’m not a spoiler. I have no intention of ruining Whispers at Moonrise for you. However, I will give you a few teasers—just to get you thinking.
1) Kylie’s powers are tested once again when she attempts to bring someone back from the dead. Someone she really loves. Someone that if she loses, her life will never be the same.
2) Kylie learns that sometimes first impressions are skewed.
3) Someone else pays in blood to have campmate hour with Kylie. You’ll never guess who it is this time!
And for a little something extra, here is the Whispers at Moonrise book trailer:
By now, after three books, you know the characters pretty well. So tell me, who is your very favorite character? I don’t mean who you want Kylie to choose—Lucas or Derek. I want to know what character you just love reading about. Who do you relate to the most? If you had to spend an hour locked in a closet with one character…JUST TALKING…which character would you choose? Do you love Perry, the class clown? Do you totally get Miranda and her “say it like it is?” Or Della who’s sassy with an “overstate things” personality. Is it Helen, the shy girl who found love that you would love to talk with? Maybe it’s Holiday, you wish you could pick her brain? And what about Kylie? She’s one every special supernatural. Tell me who you would like to spend an hour talking with and why? You never know something you might say could trigger my imagination and give me some ideas for the final scene.
Contest
Before the official release of Whispers at Moonrise, I have one more copy to give away to someone who leaves a comment. So don’t forget to tell me who your favorite character is! And if you are reading this post on Goodreads, please go to http://cchunterbooks.com/blog/ to post your comment in order to be considered to win. Good luck!
Winner
FYI: By far most of you chose Della #3, and Miranda #1 ended up with more votes, but Miranda #3 was a close second. I have selected a random name from last week’s comments. So the winner of a copy of Whispers at Moonrise is Andrea Lira-Martinez. Congratulations, Andrea! Please email me at cc@cchunterbooks.com with your mailing address so I can send you your copy.

How Do I Look?

When I sit down to write a book, I start out with an idea or image in my head of what my characters look like. But as I write, I let the characters take me wherever they go. And as their personalities come out more and more throughout the book, that image can change and become more defined.
The same thing happens when I read a book. Images of the characters form in my head. However, discussing a book with other people who have read it, I have discovered that not everyone has the same idea as to how each character looks. Even if we all agree on hair and eye color (the author usually give you that), we don’t always agree on everything else.
That got me to thinking. And I wondered what images you see when you think about my Shadow Falls characters. I have posted pictures of Kylie, Lucas & Derek, so you may have a pretty firm idea of how they look. But what about the other characters? What about Della? Miranda? Burnett? I thought it would be fun to post some photos of possible characters and let you vote on them. So, today, we are going to see what you think Della and Miranda look like.
First, let’s go with what we know. Della is Asian and has dark hair and eyes. Kylie thought she was a goth at first because she had that whole pale vampire thing going on. But what does she look like to you?
Della 1 Della 2
[image error]
Della 3 Della 4
[image error]
Now, how about Miranda? Well, she has black, lime green and pink hair. Of course hair color can change, and it was hard to find photos of girls with multi-colored hair. So, you’ll have to give me a little on that one. So, which one looks most like Miranda to you?
Miranda 1 Miranda 2

Miranda 3 Miranda 4

You’re the Best!

Sometimes I find it hard to believe how lucky I am. My Shadow Falls series has done so well and I am looking forward to the release of Whispers at Moonrise on October 2nd. So, yes, I am indeed lucky. Then again, success didn’t just drop in my lap. I spent many, many years writing. And while I was always writing books, I also wrote numerous articles for magazines. I am thankful for those articles, too, because they kept food on my table, but they also taught me to work on a deadline. And publishers appreciate it when you can finish your book on time. After all, they have their schedules, too. And if I hadn’t made my deadline for Whispers at Moonrise, you’d have to wait a lot longer for it.
Now as I said, I have much to be thankful for, but above all, I am fortunate to have so many dedicated readers! I thank my lucky stars for you. So, I’m going to share some of the pictures you have sent me, like this one of a fan reading Whispers at Moonrise. Some of you sent photos of you wearing my Shadow Falls t-shirts. I love them all! Then,
there are just some fun photos, like this one displaying my Shadow Falls Street Team welcoming packet along with an adorable cat!
Thanks for sending these in. You are the best!

The winner of last week’s contest to win a copy of Whispers at Moonrise is Misty Kalfas. Congratulations, Misty! Please email your mailing address to me at cc@cchunterbooks.com.

Della Speaks Her Mind

We’ve heard from Kylie, Derek and Lucas, but some bloggers have asked that I interview Della. So, I agreed to interview her for Lady Reader’s Bookstuff. I am reprinting it here in case you missed it. Della has always fascinated me and she gives me the hardest time. She rarely agrees to do what I want her to do. But she did agree to sit down for an interview–well, kind of.
“Come on in, Della,” I say when she appears in the doorway.
She just stands there, pokes her head in a few inches and frowns. “Where in Hades am I?”
“Relax, it’s just my mind. Some bloggers have decided that I should interview you. And Kylie’s been here before.”
“Look, C.C., or do I have to call you Mrs. Hunter?”
“C.C. is fine,” I tell her.
“Great. The thing is that I know with you being the author and all, you’re like the Queen B with an itch around here, but your mind is downright freaky. I mean, Kylie told me about this place, but I didn’t believe half the crap she said. Now I’m gonna have to apologize to her.” She took a tiny step inside. “Oh, hell! Is that a bloody sword? Why do you have something like that hanging around in your mind?”
“That would be nice.”
“What would be nice?” Della asks, but she doesn’t come in any more.
“Apologizing. I hear you don’t do that very often.”
“Oh, please, did Miranda tell you that? She’s always exaggerating everything.”
I shoot the little vampire a come clean look and she frowns.
“Okay, so I don’t like to apologize. I don’t know why you’re shocked. It’s your fault—you made me this way.”
“I created you, yes, but you are like the rest of the characters. Pretty soon you had a mind of your own. And you argued with me more than anyone else.”
“So are you gonna explain the bloody sword or not?” Della asks, ignoring my comment.
“Let’ s just say it shows up toward the end of Whispers at Moonrise and continues to be used in Chosen at Nightfall.”
“Am I gonna get to use the sword to kill someone?” Della’s expression lights up.
I roll my eyes. “You always act so tough, but I don’t think you’d really want to kill someone. Your bark is always worse than your bite.”
“You just haven’t been bitten by me.” She exposes her extended canines.
I lean back in my office chair and shrug. I can see why Miranda and Della fight so much. “Would you just come inside and sit down so we can talk.”
“About what?”
“About the books. About you and Kylie and Miranda. And maybe even about . . . Steve. The hot shape-shifter, the one you think has a cute butt.”
“Please, I’m not talking about Steve. Or his butt.” But for some reason she finally enters the room. And I think I see interest in her eyes.
“Why not?” I ask.
“The guy’s a jerk.”
“When?”
“Don’t you remember? In that scene in Whispers at Moonrise.”
I lean forward. “The only time he’s been a jerk is when you were acting like a jerkette.”
“Jerkette? Is that even a word?”
“I’m a writer,” I tell her. “I can make up words.”
Della flops down on the brown leather sofa in the corner of my mind, and continues to look around. Her gaze lands on the bloody sword again.
I follow her gaze and I admit it is kind of freaky and it’s probably making the vamp hungry.
“You’re wrong,” Della says. “I could kill someone. If they were hurting someone I cared about. I could make a shish kabob out of them.”
“And who do you care about?” I know Della cares about a lot of people; she just goes around pretending she doesn’t.
“Remember who you’re talking to,” she says. “You don’t really expect me to get all mushy and sentimental, do you?”
“I’m not asking for mushy. Just the facts. Do you care about Kylie?”
“Of course, I care about Kylie. She’s like the coolest friend I have.”
“How about Miranda?”
Della makes a funny face. “The little witch drives me batty sometimes. But yeah, I care about her, too. The three of us . . . we’re there for each other. You know, like really best friends.”
“I know and I can’t tell you how many emails I get talking about your friendship. People really admire that about you guys. The friendship is a big part of the Shadow Falls series.”
Her eyes cut back to the sword. “Yeah, but I’d bet they’d like to see me slice and dice someone with that sword, too. Hey . . . actions sells things. Action and sex.”
“Forget the sword,” I say. “What about Steve? Do you care about him?”
“I see what you’re doing here.” Della points her finger at me. I’m just lucky it’s not the middle one. Face it, Della does misbehave sometimes. “You’re trying to make me agree to get all lovey dovey with someone so you can have more romance in the book.”
“And you don’t want any part of that?” I ask. “You don’t want a guy who thinks you’re special? You don’t want to feel of his lips touching yours. Or feel that fluttery feeling in your stomach because a guy looks at you as if he can’t see anyone else in the world?”
Della stares at the wall for a second but then turns back to look at me. “Oh hell, no. I don’t want that. It messes with your mind. Seriously, look how Miranda acted the entire book of Whispers at Moonrise. I swear, if I had to hear her go on one more time about how wonderful and super sexy Perry was, I was going to puke. Lose all my O negative blood in one big hurl. And look at Kylie. You wrote what happened to her. Who wants to get hurt like that? I sure as hell don’t.”
“Love can be hard, but it’s always worthwhile. You know that. You had that with Lee, your old boyfriend before you were turned vampire.”
Della frowns. “Yeah, and I don’t want to talk about Lee. And I’m leaving you if you try to make me.”
I see a dark cloud of pain fill her eyes when she says his name. She really cared about him. I hope she’s ready to move on.
She looks around a second and then says, “He’s getting married, you know. Lee, I mean.”
“I know and that has to be hard.”
“No, it’s not,” she insists. “I don’t even care.”
I know if I was a vampire, I could hear her heart beating to a lie just now. The silence is long. “You know. I’m working on Chosen at Nightfall right now, don’t you?”
“I figured you were.”
“Well, what if you let me at least try to get you and Steve together.”
Della frowns again. “I tell you what. You let me kill someone with the sword and I’ll kiss the guy once or twice for you.”
I shake my head. “You are so full of bluff.”
“No, you are full of–”
“Let’s watch our language. I don’t know if bloggers will allow those kind of words.”
Della frowns. “So you’re actually writing Chosen at Nightfall right now?”
I nod.
“Why am I not there?” she asks.
“Don’t you remember what I set up at the end of Whispers at Moonrise?”
“You didn’t!” she snaps.
“Chill, it’s going to be okay.”
She scowls a minute and then asks, “So . . . who is going to win Kylie’s heart at the end?”
I shake my head at her question. “I don’t know, and if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”
“Why? You know that’s what all these readers want to know. Who will Kylie choose? Lucas, the hot werewolf, or Derek, the handsome fairy.”
“You know what? I think you are underestimating the readers. I think they are reading for a lot of other things, too. I’ll bet they’d like to hear about you and Steve.”
“Not happening,” Della stood up. “Can I go now?”
I nod. “Thanks for talking to me.”
She almost gets out the door when she turns around. “Have you talked to Steve about this romance crap?”’
I can’t help it. I grin. “So you’re interested, huh?”
“Of course not. I’m just curious how he took the news. I bet he freaked out.”
“I think you might be surprised.” I chuckle as Della walks away. Then I sigh and pull over my mental keyboard and go back to plotting my next scene in Chosen at Nightfall. I’m not sure Della will go for it, but maybe, just maybe . . . .
