La Dolce Vita...Living the Good Life
Often I've been asked how I come up with story ideas. There's no method to the madness of creative writing. Life experiences, imagination and observations blend together to create a story that will be read and enjoyed. On a recent trip to Italy, I was in full observation mode...please read my latest blog post, "La Dolce Vita...Living the Good Life" at http://veronicarbatterson.blogspot.com. Thanks for reading.

Things that Go Bump in the Night
For nine years, we lived in a haunted house. An honest to goodness, door-opening, noise-making haunted house. It was a lovely Cape Cod style home in Michigan built around 1938.

"I want to be a horse when I grow up" and "You mean I have to eat vegetables to be a vegetarian?"
Kids say the darnedest things. Bill Cosby's comedy series of the 1990s showed us as much. Art Linkletter did the same decades earlier. My daughters were no exception.
"I want to be a horse when I grow up" and "You mean I have to eat vegetables to be a vegetarian?" is the title of my latest blog post at http://www.veronicarbatterson.blogspo...
Thanks for taking the time to read the entry.

You'll Just Know
For anyone who has faced/is facing the loss of a pet due to illness, this blog post is for you. I was there four years ago and this post details the experience.
"About four years ago we faced a decision that any pet owner dreads. Our family dog was ill and it was just "a matter of time". No one really explains what that phrase means. You know the outcome...one day you'll no longer have that sweet family member by your side. But it's how you get to that time and what it involves that have no instruction manual for guidance..."

And Here it is...My New Blog
Well, I accomplished one of my New Year's Resolutions...to start a blog. I truly did fight it because I was convinced the world didn't need another blog (particularly mine). Managing my time was another mark against blogging. It was hard enough for me to work in what I really enjoy doing (writing) while keeping up with all of the social networking accounts I already have. But I gave in to it.
Many convinced me it was one more necessary part of the book promotion process. So blogging I go. By the way, isn't that one of the most unappealing words out there? BLOG. It sounds like something that isn't digestible. There are probably a few blogs out there fitting that description.
So here it is: http://veronicarbatterson.blogspot.com I'd certainly welcome any and all who are willing to follow. Thanks for taking the time to have a look.

New York and WAR HORSE
I just returned home from a visit to New York and was fortunate to get to see the stage play WAR HORSE at the Lincoln Center. I can't stop thinking about it.
The puppets were incredible. They took on a life of their own and that's what made the show work, in my opinion. One sees the actors "bringing the horses to life" but you don't notice the actors. Focus is on the beautiful life-like interpretation of these giant puppets. They react to life around them with sweet innocence and bold aggression...just like, well, real horses. They're lovely. The designers of these artistic creations did their research.
Based on Michael Morpurgo's book WAR HORSE, the story focuses on how horses were used in battle during World War I. The star of the book and play is Joey, a spirited thoroughbred who is sold to the British army to fight in France. Joey wins your heart.
I highly recommend seeing the play. I've yet to see the movie, but I've heard the movie is told from Joey's point of view. The stage play is not. Actors playing roles interpret the story. Joey's owner and his family are integral parts to the plot set amidst the backdrop and violence of The Great War.
WAR HORSE, the play, is moving...be prepared to shed a tear or two.

Happy Holidays...Peace...Thanksgiving
The title of this blog post isn't very creative but it does get to the point. Regardless of the holiday you celebrate at this time of the year, I wish you all the happiest and healthiest of occasions with your family and friends.
So as "the day" draws near for me (yes, I celebrate Christmas), I reflect on my life. I'm thankful for my healthy children, my husband, having food to eat and a place to sleep at night...all simple things but too often taken for granted. When the calendar turns to November, we start giving thanks. It shouldn't take annual holidays to make me acknowledge appreciation for what I have, but sometimes it does. I should work on that...perhaps it will be a New Year's resolution for me.
At any rate, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May we all see peace, find peace and feel peace in our hearts.
