How Fantasy Fiction Sparks Real-World Change: Exploring the Power of Imagination and Activism
Introduction
Fantasy fiction serves as more than just a temporary escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. It taps into the deepest recesses of our imaginations, inviting us to explore new possibilities and envision a world where the impossible becomes possible. Through the rich representation of fantastical worlds, complex characters, and epic narratives, fantasy literature fosters a sense of wonder and curiosity that exceeds the boundaries of reality.
But what sets fantasy fiction apart is its ability to exceed the limits of the page and inspire concrete change in the world. When authors include ideas like fairness, standing up for what's right, and taking care of the environment in their stories, authors shine a light on pressing issues facing society today. Readers are not just passive consumers of these stories; they are active participants, challenged to reflect on the parallels between the fictional worlds they inhabit and the realities they face.
In the pages of fantasy novels, readers encounter characters who challenge oppression, challenge injustice, and fight for a better tomorrow. These characters serve as beacons of hope, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, individuals have the power to make a difference. Through their struggles and triumphs, readers are inspired to match their bravery and resilience, to stand up for what is right and to lend their voices to causes that matter.
In the following sections, we will explore in greater depth how fantasy fiction inspires activism and drives positive change in the world.
The Power of Imagination
Unlocking Creative Potential
Fantasy fiction serves as an entry to boundless imagination. Through vivid descriptions of fantastical worlds, complicated characters, and epic quests, authors inspire the creative faculties of their readers. This creative engagement encourages individuals to imagine possibilities beyond the limitations of reality and develop a mindset primed for innovation and problem-solving.
Expanding Perspectives
By presenting diverse cultures, species, and societal structures, fantasy fiction increases readers' perspectives. Encountering characters from varied backgrounds fosters empathy and understanding, nurturing a more inclusive worldview. As readers journey alongside characters facing ghostly challenges, they collect insights into resilience, compassion, and the complexities of human nature.
Themes of Justice and Resistance
Challenging Injustice
Fantasy stories often talk about oppression, dictatorship, and unfairness. They might show a cruel leader controlling people or a system that treats some groups unfairly. These stories remind us of real-life problems. When we read them, we start thinking about how things could be better and want to make a difference.
Empowering Resistance
In lots of fantasy stories, the main characters fight against unfair rulers, showing the power of standing up for what's right. These tales not only make us brave but also show how people can make a difference when they work together. When we see characters teaming up to fight against bad rulers, it teaches us that regular people can change things when they stick together and stay determined.
Environmental Allegories and Conservation
Ecological Parallels
Fantasy stories often use the environment to send a message. They might show forests in danger from darkness or oceans harmed by greed. Authors use these stories to tell us that our planet is fragile and we need to take care of it, or else there will be serious consequences.
Call to Conservation
When fantasy authors include ideas about taking care of nature in their stories, they make us think about how humans treat the environment. These tales encourage us to protect and sustain the planet for the future. Reading them, we see environmental activism as a brave mission to keep the beauty of nature safe.
Fostering Hope and Resilience
The Hero's Journey
In lots of fantasy stories, there's a hero's journey where the main character faces tough times, grows, and eventually succeeds. As they deal with big challenges and learn about themselves, they show us how to be strong when things get hard, just like in real life. These stories teach us important lessons about never giving up, being brave, and how hope can change everything.
Inspiring Optimism
Fantasy stories give hope to people feeling down, showing them a light in the darkness. Even when everything seems bad, characters in these stories hold onto their dreams of a better future, encouraging readers to do the same. By making us feel hopeful, fantasy books help us face tough times with strength and believe in making tomorrow better.
Exploring the Role of Diversity and Representation
Celebrating Diversity
Fantasy fiction has changed to embrace diverse voices and perspectives, reflecting the richness of human experience. Authors increasingly include characters of different races, societies, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, and cultural backgrounds in their narratives. This diversity not only mirrors the complexity of real-world societies but also affirms the inherent value of all individuals.
Promoting Inclusivity
When fantasy stories include diverse characters as heroes and leaders, it shows that everyone belongs and has the power to make a difference. People from marginalized groups see themselves as brave and strong in these stories, which helps them feel valued and understood. Plus, when readers encounter different perspectives, it helps them understand others better and makes society more inclusive and caring.
Harnessing the Power of Myth and Symbolism
Archetypal Narratives
Fantasy stories often use classic story patterns and ancient ideas that people from all over the world and throughout time can relate to. Whether it's the story of a hero or the fight between good and evil, these themes tell us important things about being human. When authors retell old myths and legends in new ways, it helps us understand our own lives better.
Symbolism and Allegory
Fantasy stories are full of symbols and hidden meanings that make us think. For example, a magical object might stand for someone's inner power, or a mythical creature could represent nature's strength. These symbols have deep meanings. Authors use them to teach us morals, share ideas about life, and comment on society. It makes us think and talk about what we've read.
Empowering Through Representation and Identity
Identity Affirmation
For people from marginalized groups, seeing characters like them in fantasy stories can mean a lot. When they see characters facing the same challenges and being heroes, it shows that their experiences matter and they're important. Being represented in stories helps them feel like they belong and gives them the confidence to be themselves without feeling sorry for it.
Challenging Stereotypes
Fantasy stories can break stereotypes and change how people see marginalized groups. When characters in these stories go against traditional ideas about gender, abilities, or identity, it shows that there's more to people than what society expects. By showing the complexities of different identities, the authors help readers see diversity in a new light. This makes us more accepting and respectful of everyone's experiences.
The Role of Fan Communities and Fandom
Creating Communities
Fantasy stories bring fans together in lively communities where they share their love for the genre. Whether it's online forums, conventions, or writing their own stories, fans bond over their favorite tales, swap ideas, and create new things together. These communities give fans a place to connect, work together, and feel like they belong.
Activism Through Fandom
Fan communities often do more than just enjoy stories; they also work together to make a difference in the real world. They might raise money for charities or speak out for diversity in media. By using their love for fantasy stories to inspire action, fans show how fiction can change things in the real world.
Conclusion
In fantasy stories, there are no limits to imagination, and the idea of making a difference starts with dreaming big. When we read about justice, standing up for what's right, taking care of the environment, and never giving up, it encourages us to think about making the world better. Just like heroes in these stories, we can use what we learn to fight for fairness, protect the Earth, and keep hope alive when things get tough. In our own journey, let's remember the lessons from fantasy and believe that each of us has the power to change the world through our imagination.

Unveiling the Best of Both Worlds: Fantasy Fiction Books
Exploring the Best of Both Worlds: Fiction Fantasy Stories
In the world of books, fiction and fantasy stories shine brightly as the gateway to an amazing place where imagination can roam free. These stories tell of magic, exciting journeys, and brave heroes, capturing the hearts of readers, young and old. But what really makes fantasy fiction stories special is how they mix real-life elements with fantastical ones, creating a special experience for readers. As a writer who understands the ups and downs of life, I aim to show the best of both worlds in my stories.
Traveling Through Life’s StoryI grew up in a little town in northern New Jersey and later moved to Pennsylvania, where I settled down. My life has been like a colorful picture laced with many different experiences. Starting from when I worked in a chemical factory as a union laborer to later on when I ran an elder care agency that looked after older adults, every part of my life has influenced how I see people and how complex life can be.
Celebrating DifferencesSome of the best encounters of my life have been meeting people from all over the world while I travel as a landscape photographer. Whether I’m hiking in forests or chatting with other adventurers on mountain peaks, I’ve learned to love the differences between people and how we’re all connected. These experiences have encouraged me to include characters in my stories that represent the wide range of the human condition and to respect how each individual perceives life from their own unique perspective.
The Thrill of AdventureSince I was young, full of energy and curiosity, through my rebellious teenage years, I’ve been fascinated by adventure. Whether I was exploring nature or choosing unusual paths, I’ve welcomed life’s surprises with excitement. These experiences have inspired me to create stories about complex heroes and their incredible journeys in my fantasy books.
Handling Life’s Tough TimesLife hasn’t been easy. Like lots of people, I’ve faced many challenges. From losing a job while taking care of a growing family to starting my own business, I’ve felt the ups and downs of life. But it’s during these tough times that we learn to be strong and gain valuable lessons. My own difficulties have made my writing real, giving readers stories full of genuine feelings and struggles they can relate to.
Mixing Reality with FantasyIn my fantasy books, I try to mix reality and fantasy just right. Life itself is a mix of normal stuff and magical moments, and that’s how my stories are, too. My goal is to write stories that really connect with readers. Whether it’s about love, loss, or finding a second chance, my books show what it means to be human, with all its ups and downs.
The Power of ImaginationAt the heart of every fantasy fiction book lies the power of imagination. Through the written word, authors have the ability to transport readers to realms beyond the limits of reality, where anything is possible. It is this sense of wonder and possibility that fuels my passion for storytelling, driving me to create worlds where dreams take flight and adventures await around every corner.
ConclusionIn the world of fantasy fiction, where imagination and reality come together, readers embark on incredible journeys of discovery. Drawing from my own life, I’ve tried to make my characters real and meaningful, touching the depths of human emotion.
As readers dive into the characters I’ve created and the worlds I’ve built, they’re invited on adventures that go beyond time and space. From the ordinary to the magical, each page brings new wonders and explores the heights we celebrate and the challenges each of us face in life.
But there’s more to it than just escaping reality. Imagination sheds light on what it means to be human. In fantastical quests, readers see reflections of their own struggles and dreams. These shared experiences create a bond between author and reader that goes beyond words on a page.
Ultimately, fantasy fiction books open doors to unknown worlds, urging us to explore our imagination and humanity. As I continue my creative journey, I’m reminded of the power of storytelling to inspire and amaze.
So, let’s embrace the blend of reality and fantasy, where the ordinary meets the extraordinary. In the pages of fantasy fiction books, the magic of storytelling waits to take us away to incredible places.

The Wait is Over!
The wait is over! Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal, the second book in the epic fantasy adventure of The Utopia Falling Saga, is out on March 19th. Thank you for your patience as we counted down the days to publication. It’s available at most online retailers in ebook, paperback, and hardcover. If you’re a library regular, and yours doesn’t carry a copy, you can always ask them to. Most libraries welcome suggestions in selecting new books.
Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal was completed in autumn of 2023. Since then, I’ve been waiting anxiously to get it out to you. While the first book of the epic fantasy trilogy, Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises, won multiple awards, including Best Fiction New Age of 2023, by the American Writing Awards, Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal is even better… in my opinion.
In Chaos Ascending, Reyne plots to get back to Mithany as Tartican society collapses around him. While his love for Mithany remains his undying motivation, he hits a major bump in the road called Gina. Mera recruits the killing machine named Gina to train Reyne to take on the Devil’s Blacksmith and his Evidarian minions. We peek in on Mithany who is lost without Reyne and following a host of bad choices, well, you can read what happens. Oh yeah, Mera continues to pull amazing tricks out of his bag and whether that’s good or bad for Reyne, you have to ask yourself, did you ever really trust Mera? Then there’s Druin Derr, who will not be denied his quest for revenge while First Lord Jerithan is bitterly betrayed. Both lives will never be the same. Meanwhile, Dylla and her crew of Evidarian assassins are hot on Reyne’s trail when one of their own, Selundra Quith, makes a decision that throws everything into chaos. And let’s not forget about the Void… Reyne’s got to get through it if he is to do Mera’s bidding on Evidar. That’s a big “IF” … IF Reyne does Mera’s bidding… IF he even gets through the Void.
I hope you love reading Chaos Ascending as much as I loved writing it. I had an amazing experience delving into the characters who tell the story of the Utopia Falling Saga through their various points of view. While creating each character’s storyline—by being inside their heads as I was writing—sometimes they took me in directions I did not see coming. I’m confident you’ll be surprised where some of them landed… especially Neladith. Neladith, now there’s someone you can truly love to hate. Yet, she’s my favorite character to write. A word of caution though about Neladith. Her story arc does get a bit darker in Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal. The book’s limited scenes depicting adult material, goes slightly beyond what was explored in Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises… but that’s Neladith for you.
As always, leaving a review of either book will go a long way in helping get the word out and with the algorithms that control what books are displayed to potential readers on the various book review and online bookseller platforms. Any review, even just a star rating, is greatly appreciated.
The third and final book in the Utopia Falling Saga is almost complete. You’re going to be amazed how it all ends. If you choose to read Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal, thank you for taking a chance on me as an author. And please, let me know what you think.

The Importance of the Book Cover

Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal book cover
You all know the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” While certainly a cliché for a reason, the funny thing is that we all do it. We make snap judgements with limited information about so many things. We try not to, but the wiring in our brains doesn’t always cooperate. Whether we like to admit it, we especially do it when sizing up books.
As an author I find this particular quirk of human nature rather frustrating. Nobody is ever going to read the story a writer put so much hard work into, if the book’s cover doesn’t grab the reader’s attention… immediately. The irony is that after spending months or even years crafting a novel, it’s the work of another who will have the greatest impact on attracting readers.
There are various sources that claim to have nailed down the time a reader will spend glancing at a cover while sifting through thumbnails on Amazon or any other on-line source. Estimates range from as little as half a second, all the way up to three seconds. Wow, three seconds is all you get… at best. That’s all the time a book gets to capture a prospective reader’s interest. About six in ten will choose a book solely based on the cover art while a whopping eight out of ten will reject a book for the same reason… its cover.
There are exceptions to this rule. One is when an author has an established fan base. As an example, if George RR Martin ever finishes the next book in A Song of Ice and Fire, I’m going to buy it regardless of what’s on the outside. Likewise, anything by Joe Abercrombie is going on my shelf even if the cover is hideous… not that his book covers are. In fact, I am a huge fan of the United States book cover versions used for The Age of Madness series. Likewise, Best Served Cold, and The Heroes, have outstanding cover art.
But I have to confess to being pulled in by a book’s cover that I had no intention of reading. Going back a few years, it was the cover image on Mark Lawrence’s novel, The Prince of Thorns, that drew me in. I’ve read every book he’s written since. Such is the power of a book cover.
The Utopia Falling Saga begins with the award-winning novel, Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises, and continues in the second book, Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal. Chaos Ascending is to be released on March 19, 2024. A team from MiblArt designed all the covers in the Utopia Falling Saga trilogy. Intentionally, MiblArt maintained a similar look to all three book covers in the series. While the third book in this dark fantasy adventure is still being written, the design team has already provided a nearly finished draft of the cover. It can’t be completed just yet because the title for book three hasn’t been nailed down.
The cover, to the soon-to-be released second book Chaos Ascending: A feast of Betrayal, provides imagery that reinforces the themes of betrayal and chaos. A blade piercing a stone heart takes up the center and is intended to represent betrayal. Given the multi-POV structure of the series, there are many relationships between characters that are rife with the potential for duplicity, disloyalty, treachery, and even infidelity. But why is the heart made of stone? For the readers of the first book, the stone heart adds a touch of uncertainty. I expect familiar readers to wonder if it refers to Reyne’s love for Mithany, or is the imagery reflective of Mithany and Arek’s questionable past? There is also a new relationship introduced in Chaos Ascending; that of Reyne to his assassin trainer, Gina. Well, you get the point; while betrayal is front and center, there is the question of who is going to betray whom… or maybe they all betray each other.
The cover also depicts a riotous mob cheering on a beheading in progress. The general sense of chaos, and the loss of governmental control over its population, is the point. The greenery, the vines, and the flames come together to represent a society devoted to a way of life rooted in the Covenant’s requisite respect for Nature, being burned to the ground.
Once a reader becomes interested in the cover, the blurb on the back of the jacket is usually the next place to explore; assuming the book title hits its mark. There is an art to condensing a one-hundred-fifty-thousand-word novel into a few sentences with sufficient meaning to capture the essence of the book in a way that entices a reader to take a chance on it. Here is the blurb to Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal:
Utopia is slipping away. Teth is burning. Rebellion is exploding across the realm. Tartica is in chaos… all but for the Kingdom of Adelle under the tight grip of Chancellor Tomelai’s secret police—Druin Derr’s KCG. Governmental and religious leaders struggle to retain their hold on power while the Devil’s Blacksmith inches closer to Tartica’s ruination and Evidar’s salvation.
As civilization crumbles all around him, Reyne’s soul mirrors Tartica’s downfall; forced to abandon his bride-to-be; his brother ripped from his life; sent on a quest he neither believes in nor wants any part of; and alone, joined only by a mysterious man he doesn’t trust.
As Reyne prepares for an impossible transition through the Void to enter the dark realm of Evidar, he plots his own deception. But Evidar assassins are on his trail. They know he’s alive and they’re not only getting close, they’ve found him!
With betrayal lurking in the shadows, Tartica’s future, Evidar’s salvation, and Reyne’s life, all hang in the balance.
Reyne’s journey in the adult themed, dark, epic fantasy trilogy, The Utopia Falling Saga, continues in the second book, Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal.

The Utopia Falling Saga: Update
2024 is off to a great start! Two additional writing awards have been conferred upon Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises as the recipient of a Literary Titan Gold Book Award and a Reader Ready Award.

With the start of the new year, I’m excited to return to writing and the realms of Tartica and Evidar to bring the Utopia Falling Saga to an exciting conclusion. This past August I stepped back from writing every day to focus on successfully launching Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises and the hundreds of related activities required to pull it off. Before hitting pause on the writing process, I’d completed forty chapters of the third and final book.
As first drafts go, the third book is in much better shape than the first book was at this stage of the process. The draft manuscript is currently just over one-hundred and five thousand words, or about two-thirds finished. But you never know.
The exciting climax has already been written and as I pick up the pen again—I’d left many characters in a heap of trouble back in August—I have my work cut out for me getting them from where I’d left them, to the end. That is, if they make it to the end… hint… not everyone does!
The soft deadline to wrap up the first draft is set for February 28th. After that, two months for beta reader input and any changes that come out of that process. Once updated, following the beta read, it’ll take another two months for a developmental editor’s review and any rewrites that might be needed. Another two months for a copy editor to go over it, and, you guessed it, more rewrites. And finally, one month for a proofread editor’s input to clean up any stray spelling or grammar issues. The good news is the book cover is ahead of schedule. The designer team is currently polishing up the last few details for the cover art.
Chaos Ascending: A Feast of Betrayal, book two in the Utopia Falling Saga, will be coming out soon. More on that in the next post.
What’s on your reading list for 2024? Joe Abercrombie’s, The Wisdom of Crowds and another by Mark Lawrence, The Book That Wouldn’t Burn are on top of mine.

R.C. Vielee: Award-Winning Author

Exciting news! On November 28th, Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises, was announced as the winner of the 2023 American Writing Awards for best Fiction novel in the New Age category. It’s thrilling to have my debut book recognized for the quality of writing and for its compelling storyline. Congratulations to all the other 2023 American Writing Awards nominees, finalists, and category winners.

The organization’s website describes themselves as follows: “The AWA is an international writing competition that prides itself on providing a level playing field for authors across diverse publishing backgrounds. A panel of esteemed judges, known for their discerning taste and literary expertise, meticulously selected Winners and Finalist across an array of categories. The American Writing Awards are rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after literary contests in the country.”
Receiving the American Writing Award for best New Age Fiction is an honor and I am proud to be so recognized. For a new author, gaining credibility is often based on posted reviews. Awards, such as the AWA’s, recognizing Utopia Falling, adds a powerful voice to the discussion.
Prospective readers can be hesitant to try an untested product, but when people who have read the book post their thoughts about the story, a potential reader can get a sense of what others think, and decide if purchasing the book is worth taking a chance. Goodreads, BookBub, and Amazon are just a few of the familiar places readers seek out for the opinions of others. Online reviews not only have a tremendous impact on potential readers, but the number of reviews affects its placement on a bookseller’s website. Ending up on page three of any website doesn’t receive much traffic. One online book retailer declined to accept an add request because, although Utopia Falling is getting great reviews (click here to read them all), it didn’t meet the minimum number of posted reviews to be considered.
To all those who have already read the first book in the Utopia Falling Saga, I sincerely appreciate you for taking a chance on me as a new author. And, for those who’ve posted online reviews, you have my heartfelt thanks.
From start to finish, Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises took a few years to complete. It underwent quite a few rewrites, and with the help of beta readers, a developmental editor, copy and line edits, along with a thorough proofread edit, I believe I delivered a quality book for your reading pleasure. Thankfully, the reviews it has received so far, along with the recognition from the American Writing Awards organization, all agree.
Stay tuned. Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises is in the running for other book awards. As news of those award winners is posted, I hope to share even more good news with all of you.

Plotters and Pantsers

It’s been said that there are two types of writers, plotters and pantsers.
One of the first hurdles in scripting a book is to figure out which method of writing best lends itself to your creative process. Your answer lies in recognizing how does your brain works. For example, do your creative juices start to flow as you write? Do you review each sentence as you create it, followed by thoughts of how to say it better? Do you work best from a preconceived plot dictating what you need to get on paper? Or do you struggle with the physical act of writing keeping up with new ideas screaming to get out before they flitter away? Do you prefer pen and paper, or banging away at your computer keyboard, or speaking the story into a word capture program that types out whatever is dictated? Do you outline the entire plot or create it on the go? There are no right-or-wrong answers.
One of the first things I learned about myself as a writer, is that I’m a “pantser”. I was one before I ever knew what being a pantser meant. Plotters outline their story; whether that’s a 50,000 word romance novel, a 70,000 word thriller, or a 125,000 word sci-fi fantasy. Many authors function best with an outline, filling in the details to follow along an established path. There are advantages to this approach, and experienced professionals often recommend that writers at least start with a basic outline.
I tried. It didn’t take.
Panters work without a net, and by net, I mean, an outline. Panters go where the story takes them. The danger lies in painting yourself into a corner by writing a storyline with no way out—or no way out that the reader would believe. One famous author stated he writes the ending first. He then creates the rest of the plot, writing the story as he goes to get him to the end point he’d established.
There are varying degrees of outlines and there is an abundance of middle ground between plotting and pantsing. It doesn’t have to be all one, or the other. Whatever works for you, that’s the best approach.
I’d created an outline and thought it looked pretty good. When I began developing the characters, putting words in their mouths, describing the fantasy world they lived in, I started getting the feel for who they were. As I wrote, it wasn’t long before the manuscript veered off track from the outline.
Faced with a dilemma—rewrite or plow forward—something Stephen King said guided me (at least I think it was Stephen King). While I don’t recall the exact quote, it went something like this: “Plot is just something you give the characters to do.” The meaning I took from it was that it’s all about the characters. Even a well-worn trope can be worth reading if the author creates memorable characters.
After developing a revised outline, picking up the story from where I left off, I set about to pen the rest of my manuscript. It wasn’t long before it went off track again. I realized my creative process needed the freedom to go where the characters led me. Mostly abandoning the outline, although I knew where I wanted to take the story, my creative process took off and words flowed, meeting less resistance.
Looking back, my outlining process failed to account for the influence of life experiences that only came into play when I began fleshing out character details. The random thoughts that popped into my brain and ended up on paper when sparked by what I was writing of a character’s actions or by something one character said to another. Inspiration that otherwise would not have been unleashed but for being inside a character’s head—in the moment—as I put his or her words on paper. Outlines be damned!... for me anyway.
After finishing the first draft, I compared it to the original outline. The novel had taken on an entirely different mood. Utopia Falling: A Darkness Rises is not the book I thought I was going to write, and I am grateful for it. In fact, it had an altogether different working title.
While pleased with the first draft, it wasn’t ready for publication. And I learned my second important lesson; completing a manuscript is something to be proud of, but, first drafts almost always suck! Mine was no exception.
I’ll explore more of that revelation in a future blog post.
