Big Blue Marble in Philly

Big Blue Marble welcomes Amada Miska, editor of Split Lip Magazine, for a night of startlingly original poetry and fiction with friends Sara Lippmann and Susan Rukeyser. 

Amanda Miska is Editor-in-Chief of Split Lip Magazine and Publisher of Split Lip Press. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from American University. Her fiction and nonfiction have been published in jmww, Storychord, Five Quarterly, matchbook, Atticus Review, decomP, The Manifest Station, the Prairie Schooner blog, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. She lives and writes in the suburbs of Philadelphia, but you can find her online athttp://www.amandamiska.com/.

Sara Lippman received a BA from Brown and an MFA from The New School. She has written for national magazines, taught college English, and currently co-hosts the Sunday Salon, a monthly reading series at Jimmy's 43 in New York's East Village. Her stories have been published in Tupelo Quarterly, Joyland, Jewish Fiction, The Good Men Project, Slice Magazine, and elsewhere; nominated for the Pushcart Prize; and included in Wigleaf's Top 50. She is a former mentor for Girls Write Now and received a 2012 Fellowship in Fiction from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Raised outside of Philadelphia, she lives with her husband and children in Brooklyn. Her debut collection, Doll Palace, was longlisted for the 2015 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award.

Susan Rukeyser lives in the South but hails from New England and dreams of life in the Mojave. She was a Senior Book Buyer for the wholesaler Baker & Taylor before she left to devote herself to writing and mothering and caring for an assortment of rescued cats and dogs. Her work appears in Luna Luna, Black Heart Magazine, WhiskeyPaper, and SmokeLong Quarterly, among others. For a while she owned a tiny used bookstore in New York’s Hudson Valley. It was there she found inspiration for what became Not On Fire, Only Dying, her debut novel. Find her here: www.susanrukeyser.com.

When people are young, they are inclined to see the world in absolutes. Young writers want to MAKE IT AS A WRITER, or they are LOSERS. To me success is a daily task. At best it varies from book to book, and though it would be nice to have security, at very least, these precarious conditions do make life interesting.
