A Post About Creating Magic Systems
Today’s post can be found at http://magicalwords.net, the group blog on the business and craft of writing fantasy that I maintain with fellow authors Faith Hunter, Misty Massey, and C. E. Murphy. The post is called “Creating Magic,” and it grew out of a question from a friend about creating magic systems. I hope you enjoy it.

An Update on my WIP
Thought I'd give an update on my work in progress, since I haven't done that for some time now. Usually I'd show one of those fancy progress bars that I like so much -- you know: actual word count versus projected word count. But for a couple of reasons that doesn't really work with this current project. For one thing, I have no idea how long the book is going to be when it's done. It could be 100,000 words; it could be 130,000; it could (and probably will) come in somewhere in between. I

The Truth About Health Care
I'm back from two weeks of vacationing up north, and in getting back into the swing of everyday life, I'm also getting back into checking the news more regularly. And I'm shocked and disgusted by the tone of the health care debate. This issue is too important for our nation's health, for our children's future, and for our economic stability. We can't be basing decisions on the egregious lies being put forward by right wing critics of the Obama Administration, NOR can we allow distortions and

The Harry Potter Movie
I know that others have already weighed in on the new (6th) Harry Potter movie, but I thought I would throw in my $.02 and see if it generates any discussion.
I saw the movie with my daughters (14 and 10) and a friend of my older daughter (also 14). The kids loved it. I didn't like it very much. This was actually the second time my older daughter had seen it. She went with a big group to the Midnight premier last week -- several kids her age and two adults. The kids all loved it. The two

Is this the Other Shoe?
For those of us waiting for the other shoe to drop in the Sarah Palin "I'm-Taking-My-Toys-And-Going-Home" saga, it might have happened today.

In a suitably ironic twist, it seems that Sarah!'s legal defense fund might not have been so legal after all. What a shocker....

Weekend Ephemera
First things first: There's a new contest up on my website and you should definitely check it out. You don't need to be familiar with my books to enter -- all you need to do is read a story I recently posted there and tell me who should play the lead roles if it's ever made into a movie. Easy, right? And if I choose your response as the winner, you'll receive an autographed, hardcover edition of The Sorcerers' Plague, book I of Blood of the Southlands. So visit the site and check it out!
