Mental Health Giveaway
No, I'm not giving away mental health :o). I am part of the Mental Health Giveaway Blog Hop sponsored by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer and Reading in Twilight. It's a great hop, designed to help bring awareness to mental health issues, as well as give me a chance to give a prize to once again thank you, my lovely readers, for your time.
I think anyone who hasn't suffered from some kind of mental illness, or who hasn't been close to someone who has, has a hard time understanding. They might think, "Just get over it already." That's a mistake that keeps people from getting the care they need.
Someone I love very much suffered from an eating disorder. I suppose she always will, really, even though she's currently healthy and her relationship with food has come to a nearly normal place. I couldn't understand it - she'd certainly never been overweight, and though there were stresses in her life, to me they didn't seem to be anything extreme. But that was my point of view, not hers. To her, the stresses were enough to need an outlet, and because her family was going through some major upheavals, she didn't feel there was anyone she could turn to. So something that had once been a sort of dare with her friends some time earlier became a reality. Days of not eating, gorging and then purging, or even just eating normally when others were present, then going into the bathroom and purging, dressing in layers and exercising relentlessly.
All of this in secret. No one knew. She didn't ever get to that skeletal, dangerous point (thankfully!) before something happened that caused her to tell someone. I will forever be grateful that she did tell, and received the therapy and help needed to move past this horrible thing, but it doesn't take away the constant worry that she could relapse at any time. Her first year of college was scary because we've all heard of the "freshman 15" (the extra weight some freshman put on) and the fact that she had access to a gym anytime she wanted with no one to police her time spent there. She made it through that first big test.
At the time, I remember how much I yearned to help her, how much I would have given to have the power to take away her negative body image and replace it with the truth - that she was beautiful. I cried a lot for her, my heart broke every day when I thought of the pain she was suffering. I wanted to save her, and felt like an utter failure for not having the words that could do that. Unfortunately, all the love in the world couldn't fix her. She had to do that herself.
She's now a happy, healthy, well-adjusted young woman who will, nonetheless, have to deal with this for the rest of her life. She'll have to fight the urge, she'll have to deal with possible residual health issues that arise. And all any of us can do for her it to love her, support her, encourage her, and do an awful lot of praying for her.
Approximately 24 million Americans suffer with an eating disorder. It has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. It's scary how prevalent it is.
I read a book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia by Marya Hornbacher some years ago before I knew this person in my life suffered from these things as well. It was powerful and moving as Marya takes a blatant look at her life, and how she nearly died because of her addictions. So if you want to read a moving book about this problem, this is one I suggest.

Interview with the Author:
You write both non-fiction and fiction. Which do you find more difficult—and why? For me, writing non-fiction is easier than writing novels. Researching takes a lot of time, but then, I love that part. Since I’ve done a number of non-fiction books, I’ve settled into a comfortable routine. It’s harder to get into a routine with fiction. I’m always striving to come up with an interesting plot, figure out scenes and the characters, and all of that can be stressful. Fortunately, once I get to the revising process, writing becomes easier. I derive a great sense of satisfaction when all the editing and revising makes a polished, intriguing mystery.
Do you write as you go or do you have the book all planned out from page 1? Since I write mysteries, I have to know how the book is going to end before I can start the first chapter. I write a rough draft of the last chapter, then the first chapter, and go on from there. I have to plot very carefully to keep up the tension and so that all the clues are in place at the right time. Plotting can be hard, but its very important and actually saves time in the end, since you don’t have to rewrite and add important information that should have been there in the first place. Once you get your storyline laid out, you have a structure to follow. A contractor would never begin building a house without plans, and to my way of thinking, a mystery writer would never write without having a basic plot down on paper.
What else have you written?My first non-fiction book was Latter-day Saint Heroes and Heroines, which is a compilation of true stories about people in early Church history who risked their life in defense of the gospel.
My next three books are also compilations of true stories in early Church History, and are about angelic experiences. The first book is, And There Were Angels Among Them. The second book is, Visits From Beyond the Veil, and the third is; By the Ministering of Angels. Researching and writing these books made me realize how much Heavenly Father loves his children and that He is aware of us and our lives. I then wrote Brigham’s Boys, which tells the life stories of sixteen men who worked closely with Brigham Young as he brought the Saints across the plains and colonized the Great Basin area. I had two non-fiction books come out last year. Heroes of Faith is a collection of true stories about people who stood firm in the faith despite mobs, bullets and overwhelming trials. Gaze into Heaven, Near Death Experiences in Early Church History, is a collection of true, carefully documented near death experience, which occurred to people in the early days of the church.My first novel, Light on Fire Island, a romance/mystery came next. My second novel was Motive for Murder, which is the first in the Erica Coleman series.
What makes your mysteries standout from the crowd? First, my books are ‘clean’ books, which means no swearing and no gratuitous sex or violence. Second, I like to keep the reader guessing. My novels are ‘whodunit’ mysteries that keep readers trying to figure out who the killer is. Many current TV shows focus on high tech prowess to solve the crime. I focus more on the psychological aspects—why this person did that, why that person didn’t do this. I try to delve into the killer’s psyche and show the psychological aspects that drive their behavior. I like to have a lot of fun and interesting characters. Third, I like to incorporate humor, because everyone likes to laugh now and then. Fourth, and last, I include plenty of intriguing plot twists and turns to keep readers turning the page. Each ending of every book has a surprising, final twist.
How did you learn to write? Learning how to write is an ongoing process. I started in elementary school, did more writing in junior high, and so on. I’ve spent countless hours on manuscripts that were never published, but I don’t count that as a loss, since it helped me improve my writing. I have a bookshelf full of books on writing and every weekday morning, I try to read 2-4 pages. I underline important parts, then type them up, which hopefully, sets the ideas in my brain. When I’m done with the book, I print out up my notes and save them in a master binder so I can look them over now and then. Another thing that helps me is that I try to pay attention when I read. If I don’t like something, I try to figure out why and then not do that in my own writing! And when I read something I like, I try to think about why it worked so I can use that same technique in my own writing. I also attend a yearly writer’s conference and the wonderful workshops help me learn more about the craft of writing. Anyone can write—as long as they are willing to practice and study.
What is the funnest thing about being an author? The most frustrating thing?The greatest thing is simply being able to sit down and take time to write. When my children were small, I felt very guilty about taking time to write, as though it was some nefarious indulgence. Now that I’ve published nine books, I no longer feel guilty taking time to do what I enjoy. Sometimes writing is difficult, occasionally it’s a chore, but I love it. I’ve always felt driven to write. I have such a deep inner desire to put words down that I sometimes wonder if I’m an addict! It gives me a great sense of accomplishment and pleasure to write, polish and revise and get the words just right.The most frustrating thing for me is usually the first draft. The Hungry Family
The Hungry Family: No, not mine, though I suppose they all have times of being hungry! Instead, I'm sharing with you Christina Dymock's newest book, The Hungry Family Slow Cooker Cookbook .

My Thoughts: I received a copy of this book for review, and I was happy about that because anything to make dinnertime easier is something I'm glad to learn. I'm not exactly domestic, and cooking is about as fun to me as cleaning - which is to say, not at all. The thing I love about this book is that the recipes are easy to put together without a bunch of strange, hard-to-pronounce ingredients. And they're family friendly, meaning food that your family will actually eat and enjoy. A few of my favorites are:
*Steak and Potato Dinner (who knew you could cook steak in a slow cooker?)
*Creamy Balsamic Roast (I love almost anything balsamic)
*Roasted Chicken (tastes like the ones you buy at the store that are from the rotisserie)
*Corn on the Cob (I would never have thought to cook that in a slow cooker!)
*Chocolate Cobbler (okay, I'll be honest, this one is my favorite)
*Pudding Cake (yes, it's chocolate as well)
FYI, if you're a fan of chili, there's a whole section of chili recipes. Great book, and I have to say it's beautifully laid out. Gorgeous and delicious book to add to your cookbook collection. It will be officially released March 11th, but you can pre-order on Amazon now. Once released it will also be available at Costco, Sam's Club, Deseret Book, Seagull Book, Barnes and Noble, and other bookstores.

The Summer I Found You by Jolene Perry
Thanks to my friend Jolene Perry for stopping by today to show us her new release, The Summer I Found You. I haven't gotten a chance to read this yet, but it's high on my TBR list. Diabetic teen girls happen to be near and dear to my heart since I'm the mom of one! Plus, it just sounds awesome, and Jolene's books are the best.
All they have in common is that they're less than perfect. And all they're looking for is the perfect distraction.
Kate had the perfect boyfriend - until he dumped her. It couldn't have come at a worse time; ever since she found out she has diabetes, she's been trying to cope. She just wants to feel normal again.
Aidan planned on being a lifer in the Army and went to Afghanistan straight out of high school. Now he's the guy with one arm and nothing is the same as it was before. He wishes he could forget.
When Kate and Aidan meet, things couldn't be more awkward. Neither wants to get too attached, and they both could use some fun. But what if they need each other more than they realize?

This is Kate (my MC) with her EX-boyfriend at school when she has an issue w/ her health...
Shelton’s familiar arm is around me, and I lean into him. Not as much because I like him, but because my world’s swimming right now, and I need to remember what I ate, and know what my blood sugar is so I know how much insulin to take. Why didn’t I do this right at lunch when I’m supposed to? It would have been so much easier. Now there’s another thing Shelton can add to the list he probably keeps of why Kate is crazy. “You should have done this during lunch hour, Kate.” I really hate it when people point out the obvious—especially when I’ve already figured it out. “Okay, almost there. You’re quiet, which kind of scares me.” His voice is the same warm, soft voice that used to tell me he loved me. Talked to me until I couldn’t keep my eyes open. Read my homework to me while I spent a few days in the hospital getting adjusted to my new life. “I’m okay. Sorry, and thank you.” Because at least I’m smart enough to know that being as petty as I’d like to be right now, won’t earn me anything. He keeps his arm firmly on my side and pulls open the nurse’s door, leading me to one of the horrible vinyl beds. “So you mind?” He goes to the high cupboard that’s supposed to be locked, but never is. My stuff ’s in there. Shelton knows this. He knows so much. Did we turn into friends? Guess it doesn’t matter because we’re not together, and he did not handle our breakup well. Okay, so neither did I. But still. Neither did he. Shelton pulls a hard, plastic chair up to the bed. I sit back and lean against the cool wall. He hands me my small tester. I stick my finger in and wait for the prick. “Kate!” Shelley rushes to my side. And yes, I’m on a first name basis with the school nurse. Just another perk. “She’ll be okay.” Shelton chuckles. “I’ve seen her a lot worse. She’s only a little high.” He checks my reader. “Or way high. You’re above three hundred, Kate.” I cringe. Mom’s going to be pissed. My lows come on a lot faster and feel a lot worse, but I guess it’s the highs that do real damage. I don’t like to think about that much, so I don’t. Shelley clutches her hands together, and looks at me with her teeny little frowny face. “Want me to do your shot?” Shelton asks. I’m an idiot. I nod. I hate doing it, and Shelton was always the best. Better than Mom. Better than Dad. It’s like he could take me out of the equation. “Thank you.” I lie down. My ex-boyfriend is about to pull a pinch of fat from my stomach to give me my shot. This is just... well there aren’t words. “Let’s find the fattiest part of Kate,” he teases...

A is for Abinadi by Heidi Poelman and Jason Pruett

Okay, I know, most of the followers and readers of my blog are a little too old for children's books. But I was asked by the author to read and review the book, and since I'd seen some parts of it that I thought were really cute, I agreed. So, without further ado, here's info about the book, and my thoughts on it.

Blurb: A is for apple but also for Abinadi! Teach your children about some of the greatest heroes in the scriptures with this beautifully illustrated alphabet book. They will love searching for items that represent each letter while they get to know heroes like Captain Moroni and Esther. Along with learning their ABCs, your children will learn to recognize and love these great Book of Mormon and Bible examples.
My Thoughts: This is a really cute book, with bright, colorful illustrations that will definitely hold a child's interest. The short description on each page with each letter naming a prophet are just short enough to keep a child's attention, while being filled with enough information to know who the prophet is. For example, this is the page for "N":

While all of the drawings are adorable, and most of them are appropriate, there were a few that were maybe just a bit lighthearted for the particular subject of the page. (The page for Hannah was heartbreaking for anyone who's ever dealt with infertility.) But that's a personal opinion, and probably wouldn't even register for most people--definitely not with the target audience for this book who will find them all delightful. Overall, I recommend this book as a tool for teaching the little ones about some of the prophets.

Heidi received her degrees in communication from Brigham Young University (BA) and Wake Forest University (MA). She lives in Utah with her husband and three children.
Jason Pruett has always loved making people smile. Jason has degrees in art from BYU (BFA) and the Academy of Art University (MFA). He lives in Los Angeles with his wife where he creates drawings that make people smile.
