Snakeheads are the worst human beings known to man.
Snakeheads are Chinese gangsters, based both in China and in the United States, who smuggle Chinese immigrants into the United States.
The price is not cheap; $50,000 a head. And the process is brutal.
Because the Chinese people who yearn for a better life are dirt poor, a small percentage of the smuggling money is paid up front to the Snakeheads. However, the collection of the balance is certain; or bad things happen to the illegal Chinese immigrants: beatings, torture, and sometimes even death.
When they arrive in America, the illegal immigrants work in Chinese restaurants, for pennies an hour. They labor in hot kitchens for 12-18 hours a day, and after work, they are chained in a filthy room so they cannot escape.
If one of them does manage to escape, their relatives in China are punished instead.
“Snakeheads” is set in Manhattan’s Chinatown, where the Italian-American mob tries to horn in on the immense profits generated by the Snakeheads’ human smuggling operation. The Italians want their piece of the action, and the Chinese gangsters resist – violently.
Thrust into the middle of this warfare is an Italian-America detective, who falls in love with a Chinese businesswoman. Together, they attempt to eradicate the villains who profit on the backs of the poor illegal Chinese immigrants.

“Mobsters, Gangs, Crooks, and Other Creeps – Volume 2- New York City” is not a continuation of “Mobsters, Gangs, Crooks, and Other Creeps – Volume 1- New York City,” but rather a complement to Volume I. Volume 2 starts in the time period of the early 1820’s, and ends in the mid 1900’s.
This is not a book about nice people. This is a book about the lowest forms of life ever to walk the face of the earth: Mafioso, murderers, con artists, prostitutes, base street thugs, crooked politicians; people who do deliciously decadent things to other people, as easy as stepping on a roach. The exception is New York City Detective Joseph Petrosino, who took on the vicious Black Hand, but lost his life in Sicily because he wasn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.
“Mobsters, Gangs, Crooks, and Other Creeps – Volume 2- New York City” is not for everyone. But if you enjoy reading about people who are so unaffected about what they do, they can eat a hot roast beef sandwich minutes after slitting some poor guy’s throat, this book is definitely for you.

After winning a Brooklyn mob war against the three Shapiro brothers (Reles was involved in the murder of all three Shapiros), Reles took over the rackets in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Reles knew he was screwed. He knew that two men corroborating that he had whacked Alpert was all the District Attorney needed to fry his butt in the electric chair. So Reles did what no one in the underworld thought he was capable of doing: Reles became a rat.

I have just finished the third volume of Mobsters, Gangs, Crooks, and Other Creeps. I must say that I love the era that all the books were written about, and these books were fabulous. With a short bio of each character, it really made the era come to life as you read. Being a New Yorker myself, the places were real and very interesting. If you like the 1920’s and 30’s in New York, you will enjoy these books.
