(ANOTHER) POEM OF THE DAY BY PABLO NERUDA

ODE TO SUMMER
Summer, red violin,clear cloud,
the humof a sawor cicadasannounce your arrival. The heavensarchto a smoothness, lucent as an eye,and below your gaze, summer, you arean infinite sky-fish,shameless messengerof praise,lazy,sleepy-eyed one, little bee belly, mischievoussun, terrible paternal sun, sweaty as a toiling ox,and the scorching sunin one’s head is like a sudden blow, sun of thirstcrossing the sand, summer, desert sea.The sulfurminerdripsyellow sweat, the aviatormaps, ray by ray,the celestial sun, darkenedsweatslipsdown a foreheadinto the eyes;at Lota, the minerscrubshis blackened forehead.Seed bedsburn, wheatrustlesblue insects seekshade, touchrefreshment, dive headlonginto diamonds.Oh lushsummer, ripeapplecart, verdantstrawberry mouth, lips of wild plum, roads of tenderdust on dust, midday coppery reddrum. In the afternoon, firerests, air makes cloverdance; it entersthe deserted factory:a fresh starrisesin the cloudysky.A summer nightsizzles without burning.
