Why We Love TV Crime Dramas — And Hate Them

You know the scene. In a dingy jailhouse meeting room, the prosecutor badgers the defendant until he sobbingly confesses: “Okay, I killed her! I had no choice!” Meanwhile, the defense attorney sits there looking mildly constipated. A real defense attorney is as likely to let his client be questioned by the prosecutors as a lobster is to throw himself into a pot of boiling water. Defense attorneys know the vast majority of their clients are guilty – and any time a defendant opens his mouth, he risks revealing that. As a writer, I understand why this scene is so popular – the prosecutor hero needs to find out what really happened, and only the killer can say for sure. But it’s pure fiction. (That said, I will always have a crush on Sam Waterston, the maestro of this scene on Law & Order.)

SVU Episode #13-22: Strange Beauty

TweetFuneral parlors have been charged with cutting off corpses’ limbs and selling them for medical research. The worst thing I saw as a prosecutor were mothers who sold their own children into prostitution in order to fund a drug habit. But I’ve never heard of a single person selling their limbs for any amount of money. Maybe I’ve just been hanging out in the wrong circus tents.

Well, what do you think, SVU fans? Is amputation the new black? Would you be willing to sell any part of your body for cash? And what are the chances that a crazed psychiatrist who has a leg-amputation fetish would fall for a one-legged girl who just happens to be into surgical body-modification? Leave your comments!

George Litz: handsome husband, successful entrepreneur, and dashing fictional character

TweetBJ and George Litz, dancing at their daughter's wedding at Ravens stadium

Amazing biceps for any woman, but particularly for someone who has five grandkids, right? Just looking at this picture made me resolve to go to the gym more.

But the part of her email I loved the most was this:  BJ wrote, “George is amazing and even more handsome then ever with no hair!!”

George Litz obviously has terrific taste in women, and he’s one of life’s good guys. I’m honored to be naming one of the good guys in my next book after him.
