GuerrillaReads No. 15
What does the desert mean to you? For poet Ruth Nolan, a native of the Mojave Desert, it's about walking rain, pavement fallen from the Milky Way and secret chili dreams.
Nolan is editor of No Place for a Puritan: The Literature of California's Deserts, and Phantom Seed, a magazine of California desert poetry, experiments and prose.

GuerrillaReads No. 14
After Arizona passed its controversial racial profiling bill, SB 1070, response across the country was swift. Even poets joined in, including Juan Felipe Herrera with his poem Arizona Green (Manifesto #1070).
In this video, Herrera is joined by poets Michael Medrano and Anita Hernandez in a lively guerrilla reading of the poem at the Latino Book and Family Festival in Los Angeles.
If you're having trouble seeing the video above, click here.
You'll find more photos from the LBFF here.

GuerrillaReads No. 13
Lucky number 13 on GuerrillaReads is Kathy Charles, reading from her book John Belushi Is Dead at the West Hollywood Book Fair. Here's Kathy talking about her book in a recent interview:
I've always been fascinated by stories about young people who form unlikely bonds with their elders…. I love the idea that two people can come from such dramatically different backgrounds and forge such a strong bond. People connect in their hearts. Sometimes age is just irrelevant.
This book was originally published in Australia under a different title, but it's made its way across the equator and halfway around the globe, where it's now available from MTV Books.

GuerrillaReads at the 2010 West Hollywood Book Fair
Will you be there? GuerrillaReads will.
This year I'll be at the West Hollywood Book Fair with my camera in hand to video writers reading their own work, live and in person.
Here's how it works. You come to the book fair with a piece of your own original fiction or poetry no more than five minutes long (plus a brief intro of yourself and your work). Polish and practice it, and be ready to read it before a camera live at the fair. I'll video the reading, edit it and post it to YouTube. The best readings will be selected for publication on GuerrillaReads.com.
The West Hollywood Book Fair will be on Sunday, September 26, 2010.
If you're ready to sign up for a timeslot for your reading, click here.
In the meantime, read some books already!

Not quite guerrilla, but definitely a reading
Watch this Intense Reading contest, taking place somewhere in a field in the American midwest.
I love finding literature in unexpected places, don't you?

Guerrilla reading, Saudi style
One of the hottest reality shows in the Middle East these days is Millions' Poet, where poets from around the region compete to be named best Arabic poet. It's sort of like American Idol, only the competitors actually have to write their own original poetry too as part of the competition. Even today, poetry remains a very important part of Middle East popular culture.
Earlier this year, Hissa Hilal won widespread acclaim – and some condemnation – when she competed and became a finalist for the grand prize. That's right – she's a she. Competing in a full abaya and niqab, she spoke out for women's rights in her poetry as well.
This story from the BBC tells her story, and shows Hissa Hilal reciting her poetry:
