Broadway's Music and Lyrics Writer Jerry Herman Passed Away Today
On a whim, I found myself sitting in the back of the theatre at a preview performance of the 2004 Broadway revival of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. A few minutes before the curtain went up, I spotted Jerry Herman sitting in the third row center orchestra. Something possessed me to make my way to the front of the orchestra and stand in the aisle next to his seat. “Mr. Herman, I’ve seen all of your plays, and I own all of your musical CDs, and I loved your autobiography.”
“Thank you so much,” Jerry Herman replied with a gracious smile as he pulled down the jacket of his black suit.
After the king of the musical theatre kindly signed the cover of my playbill (over Harvey Fierstein’s name), the lights began to fade in the theatre. “My sister isn't coming.” Jerry Herman pointed to the seat next to him. “You can sit here.”
I fell into the chair next to Jerry Herman, and the curtain went up on the amazing show. I literally rubbed elbows with him as we both laughed and applauded throughout the first act.
At intermission, Jerry Herman asked for my impression on how the revival held up to the original production. I discussed the revival's many attributes including the openly gay stars (Gary Beach, Daniel Davis, and Gavin Creel), all male Cagelles, and the kiss between the two leads which all made that production more believable. After wiping my eyes and standing for the curtain call, I said, “I predict the show will win Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Choreographer.”
“From your mouth to God’s ears,” Jerry Herman replied with a wink.
Then I thanked him for the seat and went on my way.
Months later when watching the Tony Awards on television, I cheered as LA CAGE AUX FOLLES indeed won the awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Choreography that year. I wondered if Jerry Herman thought of me as thought of him.
