“Xavier, are you waiting for someone?” I scan the hallway.
He stands from the wall, taking a few steps in my direction. “I didn’t get your name.”
I glance up, extending a hand. “Ryann.”
I estimate he’s a few inches taller than me. I’m sure his size intimidates most, but I’m six feet myself.
“Ryann, I was waiting for you.” He smiles with a chuckle brushing his thumb across the tip of his nose. He breaks eye contact for a second before turning back.
“Yo X, congrats man.” Another waiter passes by, and Xavier taps fists with him.
“Thanks, man. I’ll see you on Friday?”
“No doubt.”
We’re alone again, and Xavier turns back to me. “I’d like to take you out.”
“Congrats? Did you get a promotion?”
“Not exactly. It’s my last day.”
“Oh, really.” I step aside to let someone pass. “What’s next for you?”
“I got plans. I’ll tell you all about it over dinner.”
“Are you old enough to date?” I tease to bring my hormones under control because my senses are on an epic roller coaster, from nervous to agitated to flattered. “No shade.” I hold back a laugh.
“That sounds shady as hell.” His mouth twists as if in deep thought with his eyes peering through his thick eyelashes down into mine. “I got you ma. Kick it with me, Friday night.”
“Kick it…with you?” I point at him, pronouncing every letter and syllable sounding boujee as hell.
Xavier is handsome, I’ll give him that, but he looks no more than twenty-three, twenty-four, tops. And I’m adding a few of those years purely on the strength of his full facial hair. It gives him a mature appearance.
“Yes, Ryann, with me.”
He leans back with open hands before dropping them in front of his bulky body. One hand clasping the wrist of the other, giving off an aura that I’ve seen a few men possess, namely Denzel Washington, Barak Obama, Shawn Carter. Those kinds of men. That I’m the man—even on my worse day—type of look.
I get a good look. I start from his close crop hair swimming in waves, not excessive, but it shows he takes pride in his appearance. I take my time ending at his polished dress shoes. His swag is on one thousand.
“My father always says, ‘You study long. You study wrong.’” He adds with a cocky grin.
The energy passing between us is explosive, and I’m not beneath enjoying a beautiful specimen such as Xavier but…
“It’s one date, not forever…yet.” He licks his lips, and I glance over my shoulder at the luncheon to bring my temperature down a few notches. “Friday night, I’ll pick you up, you’ll be my special guest.”
“Special guest?” I turn back, and he’s closer. I stand straighter next to him. Even in my heels, I have to look up to meet his intense gaze.
“That’s right. I’d love nothing more than to play this little game with you ma, but I have an appointment. All I need is your address.” He passes his phone, and I stare at it.
“I didn’t say yes.” I cross my hands over my chest, bringing us closer.
“You won’t have to pull out your wallet. I’m not a wack-ass chump that doesn’t know how to treat a beautiful woman, such as yourself. I’ll get you to and from your home safely. So what do you say gorgeous?”
“Beautiful, gorgeous, laying it on pretty thick?”
“I’m gunning for date number two.

“Parker.”
“Max.” Her eyes are sharp and assessing. The thin smile tells the truth of her feelings.
“Got a second?”
She slides over until her back is against the window. I lower into the seat beside her. I sit back, watching the city through the wide windshield. Then I glance over my shoulder at her.
God, she’s beautiful.
“How—” We say in unison.
She laughs, fiddling with her glasses. “Go ahead.”
“How are you, Parker?”
“I’m…good. Better than good, really. How about you? How are you?”
“Life keeps me moving at a faster than normal pace. But I’m living my dream. So, I won’t complain.”
“Are you still in—”
“New York. Yes, that’s home now.” I pull away from her eyes to bring my emotions under control. “And is this all you?” I lift a hand to the bus, the people.
“Sort of. I’m still in real estate plus rental property and a business with the guys.”
“Doing it big. You always said you’d make your first million before your thirtieth birthday.”
“And I did.”
“Nothing and no one stands in Parker Belle Hamilton’s way.” Her nose flares. The words slipped out really, but now they hang between us like a brick anchored to our past, and suddenly we’re sinking.
“Is there a reason you’re here, Max?”
“In Austin or on your bus?”
“Both.” Her arms cross as if holding herself back.
“I was invited.”
“By Stephanie?” I nod.
Parker turns, facing ahead with stiff dignity. I let my eyes caress her profile. I want to touch her, but that’s out of the question. Parker is the type of woman every man wants until he learns she won’t hesitate to put her dreams and aspirations before anything and anyone, even love.
“Well, I hope you enjoy the activities we have planned for the day.” The fake chipper tone grinds my nerves like worn brakes.
“That’s fucked up Parker.”
“Ditto, Max.” Her head snaps towards me, her face clouded in anger. “We have several guides available in lemon colored Parker Belle tees. I’m available if they’re unable to answer your questions.”
“It’s like that?” I stand up. Trying to talk with her is a bad idea.
“I don’t know, you tell me. Oh, and send Stephanie my best.”
“Fine.”

“You know what they say about getting over someone.”
“Where is that one going?” He smiles.
I totally blame my bestie Charlee. She has the weirdest sayings and tonight I’m using it because I don’t want to think about Les or about going home to an empty house or about knowing he slept with her and got her pregnant again and… “Zachary, would you like to get out of here?”
One eyebrow lifts and I can’t believe the words came out of my mouth.
“A responsible man would say no. You’re hurt right now. You may see the situation differently after you sleep on it. Because it could all be a misunderstanding.”
“Are you a responsible man?”
I lean forward trying my best to flirt. I move close enough to see the flecks of yellow in his eyes, and the scent of his cologne surrounds me. I’ve never really had to flirt. Les was my first and only. But now I’m a single woman fighting to forget.
“I am a responsible man. But you’re asking me after a few drinks. I think it’s a crime to seduce an emotionally vulnerable man.”
I throw my head back, laughing. “Emotionally vulnerable?”
He nods, leaning closer. “Yes. I told you about my father, and it’s Memorial Day.”
“Should I take my offer back?” I glance up, his gaze holds me captive, and I want to experience the desire I see directed at me.
“And shatter my excitement?” He holds a hand over his heart.
“Excitement?” I’m smiling again, and the sensation becomes a demanding pulse of need.
“A beautiful woman asking to spend time with an emotional wreck like myself.” He shrugs. The joke is barely off his lips before I kiss him.
The taste of the too fruity drink passes between us. His thin lips sandwich mine, then he tilts his head, and I want more. I slip my tongue in his mouth, and Zachary pulls me to him. This kiss is deep, slow, and daring and our heads are moving back in forth to get the absolute best angle to taste perfection.
My heart hammers in my chest as he kisses down my jaw to my neck. This too is new. It is hot and heavy and happening in the bar. Then suddenly he pulls away. We’re breathing heavy, our chests rise and fall. I want more.

Move Charlee, I tell my feet. The crunch of the gravel beneath my heels underscore my walk to the bad side.
Okay, I’m extra dramatic. But the laser focus of his eyes sweep my body boldly, and I’m on display. And I’m conscious of the fit of my dress, conscious of the height of my heels, conscious of how I like the response I’m getting from him.
What the fu—
I choke the thought because I will not say or think another swear word until I get back to my car. Amen.
I stop in front of Darius. We take a minute to assess each other up close.
“Charlee Raine, to what do I owe this honor?”
I extend a hand. “Long time no see.”
“Oh, so we’re at the handshake stage?” He stares at my offer as if offended. Then he grabs my hand and brings it to his lips.
“You do know we’re in front of a church?” I tease.
“I’m sure this soft peck on your hand doesn’t compare to the thoughts running through that head of yours.”
I laugh. “You got me.”
“How many times did you curse?”
“I will not answer that question.” I chuckle.
“Give me a hug Charlee Raine.”
And like old times I fall into his chest. His arms slip around my waist, not intimately, but worse, it’s the type of hug that makes you body remember old times. He held me like this when my parents told me about their divorce. He held me like this when I was asked to participate in my father’s wedding to his second wife, months after my parents’ divorce was final. And like before, I smell the hint of his aftershave mixed with his favorite cologne. He’s not groping or taking the hug too far. It’s just right.
“Thank you.” He whispers. Then I step back.
We stand lost in time until I hear a throat clear behind me. I glance back and remember we’re not alone.
“Darius, I think you know everyone.” I sweep through the ladies, and they shake hands. “We thought we’d invite you out for drinks to get reacquainted and see if there’s a way we can help you and Delicious Chocolates.”
He adjusts into a wide-leg stand, crossing his arms over his chest. “Drinks with all of you?”
“Yes.” I clear my throat, looking off for a moment. “I heard you mention expending opportunities to businesses in the area and we have a business.”
“Congratulations! What do you guys do?” He smiles.
“We have an elite concierge service.”
“What exactly does that mean?” He steps closer.
“That’s why I’m inviting you to have drinks with us.” His eyes sweep my face, and if I were a few shades darker, he’d see me blush. “Stop acting like you don’t want to.”
“All right Charlee, I’ll bite?”
“Oh really…” slipped out and a smoldering hue fills his eyes, and an irresistibly devastating grin spreads across his face.
He takes another step, and I have to tilt my head to maintain eye contact. “Only if you want me to.”

…a sensuous tingle runs up my spine. I glance up.
Blink. Blink. Am I imagining?
I see Liam standing at the bar. My mouth drops open, and he’s staring at me with longing in his eyes.
“Is that him?”
I try to nod discreetly, but I’m not sure if my head is moving.
“Hot damn. That man is ready to eat you alive.” I swear she’s hollering and I’d kill her if I could move.
“I agree with Charlee.”
“You can’t,” I whine not taking my eyes off of him. His dress shirt is unbuttoned at the neck. He appears relaxed.
“I can’t what honey.” Hunter is talking through her teeth with a smile stretched across her face.
“You can’t agree with Charlee. She’ll have me butt naked screaming the man’s name in the middle of S&J.”
“As if, you’re not thinking about it already.” Charlee waves Liam over, and I’m planning her funeral in my head.
He approaches the table, his gaze locked with mine. “Harper.”
The words lodge in my throat. Why God? Why am I either cursing the man out or a mumbling idiot? This isn’t fair. Then he smiles. “Ladies.”
I swear they stop breathing, and so do I. He is that fine.
“Join us,” Hunter offers sliding over. I turn throwing pin-sharp daggers at her with my eyes. She shrugs.
“I have a few minutes while I wait on my food.” Liam sits next to me. He fills the space, his leg rests against mine. His eyes turn blue-green unsettling me.
Uh-hum. Charlee clears her throat. But I can’t pull my eyes away.
Liam drapes an arm across the back of the booth leaning closer. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends?” He pulls back with a mischievous smile on his face.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Breathing and thinking is a chore right now.
“Enjoying your leg against mine, the smell of your perfume, the feel of your—” His hand is on my thigh, and I jump. A smile is tugging on the corners of his lips.
“Liam, these are my best guys.” I glance at them. “Hunter and Charlee.”
He leans over me shaking their hands, brushing his body against mine.
“I’m going to get you for this,” I whisper for his ears to hear.
“Promise?”
