Michelle Miles: Who's ready for fall?

I don't know about you but Labor Day, for me, is the official end of summer. The kids are back in school, high school football is in full swing, the hockey season is on the horizon and cooler temps are on their way. All the stores have fall décor out and I LOVE IT. It's by far my favorite time of year.

It's also the time of year I lament I live in North Texas and it's still hot until like September 30. It's rare we get cooler temps around here until at least October. Or rain. Or the fall colors that I love so much in nature. We don't exactly have this:

But I don't let that stop me from pulling out all my decorations. I went crazy one year and made a bazillion craft pumpkins. I love going to Michael's to browse all the decorations. I swear this year I'm going to make a new grapevine wreath with one of those half craft pumpkins. But I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm also busy creating Santa ornaments for Christmas.

Anyway... all this to say I am so ready for summer to go away. I probably blog about this every year, don't I? :)

What is your favorite season? What do you love most about it? I think you know what my answer is! :)

BSP: It's Launch Day!!! for Temporarily Insane #MFRWorg #Rssos #TWRP #RB4U

It’s Happy Launch Day!
I'm blushing and bursting with pride to announce my second book in my romantic comedy mystery series, Temporarily Insane, is now available.

Each work most of we authors write is our baby and today, mine is out in the big wide world. It's laugh out loud funny, packed with emotion, a frustrating relationship with a to-die for hero, and a wacky cast of family and friends.

Here's an excerpt:

Trixie had some nerve.

“Stop it, Hattie!”

Her reprimand, the one which had shot a stabbing pain to my right eye, sounded terribly out of character, like she had little patience for me. Ordinarily, she was the nicest person I knew, didn’t have a mean bone in her body. The kind who rescued animals, picked up trash at Sommerville Park, and prepared food for the elderly.

Not today. I narrowed my eyes and crossed my arms across my chest in a school girl flaunt.

Trixie tilted forward in her desk chair, her bosom almost resting on her desk. “This nonsense has to end. Your moan sounded like an obscure breed of a bizarre...untamed...wounded animal.” She returned to an upright and seated position and in tiny increments, rotated her chair from side-to-side, waiting for me to say something not stupid.

In truth, Trixie had pounded the nail on the head. I had nothing to add. My whole life had turned into an obscure, bizarre, bad reflection of itself, thus wounding me to my core. I sighed and pouted an if only.

Don’t go there.

My funsister friend owned the employment agency Jobs Inc., and on occasion, she’d happily assisted me in finding temporary work since my dream job had been flushed down the proverbial toilet a few months back, thus soiling my picture perfect life. For this newest assignment she’d located, I’d be employed as an administrative assistant for the managing partner at Northside, Lancaster, and Brookside, Certified Public Accountants, headquartered in my hometown of Sommerville.

At first, she’d sounded oh-so pleasant when we began our yak about the opportunity. “Think accounting,” she’d teased, followed by a small chuckle.

Her laugh had spoken volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica proportions.
Let's get to know Stewart Steems, Hattie's new co-worker:  His legs were kinda knobby in knee socks. What could be underneath? He was sorta on the thin side. So maybe, they were skinny? However, if he wanted to meet girls, his geeky socks had to go. “Stuart, the look you’re sporting is from the fifties. I’m telling you girls don’t go for guys wearing socks with sandals.”

Stuart scratched the side of his nose while considering what I’d said. “Okay.” He sat on the threshold step and took off the sandals, then the socks.

I leaned over to watch. He was right—Stuart had ugly legs. Ugly. Scrawny. Very gorilla-hairy legs. Yet firm calves. I shuddered. If his legs were like this, what…

Don’t go there. Don’t go there.
And: He’d placed on his shirt pocket a fill-in-the-blank “Hi! My Name Is” sticky nametag, inscribed with what appeared to be permanent blue-black ink in large capital letters, “STUART STEEMS.”
This pretty much confirmed what I’d been aware of all along: Stuart didn’t party.

The only thing Nixy and the Silver Six crafty seniors enjoy more than making a scene—is making sense of a crime scene.
250 Word Excerpt from Paint the Town Dead:

“Nixy, child, how do we look in our new polo shirts?”I realized the Six were lined up for inspection. We were each outfitted in white shirts with Handcraft Emporium embroidered in forest green above the left breast. Sherry, Maise, Aster, and I wore blue jeans and tennis shoes, while Dapper Dab wore his shirt with polyester pants and loafers. Elegant Eleanor, as I liked to call her, had dressed up her shirt with blue linen slacks and low-heeled pumps.“You look fantastic. Does the shirt work for you, Fred?”“Ain’t used to working with a collar around my neck, but it’s okay.”Fix-It Fred was a walking hardware store in bib overalls. Tonight he wore a dark denim. The many tools he stuck into each of his dozen pockets stood soldier straight. With that, all the seniors but Fred headed through the door into the emporium proper.“Where are y’all going?”            “To mingle in the store,” Sherry said with a wave. When the door closed behind the exodus, I cocked a brow at Fred. “You’re not going out front?”“Nope, out back. I told Ida Bollings to park in the lot out there, so I’ll go keep a lookout for her.”“You see Ida a lot?”He winked. “What can I say? I got a weakness for dames with hot wheels.”“Wheels as in her big blue Buick or that new walker she’s sporting?”“Both. Besides, she’s bringing her famous pear bread.”

Release Day: In the Tower of the Wizard King by Michelle Miles

IT'S RELEASE DAY! I'm so excited to get this book out and in the hands of readers. It's available in print or eBook and coming soon to audio. Below is the blurb, an excerpt and buy links!
In the Age of Wizards, Time is a commodity more valuable than gold.

When Aoife (EE-fa) stumbles upon an antique trunk in the attic, it calls to her with an ancient magic. Inside she finds a stairway leading into darkness and cannot resist stepping onto that first stair. It leads her to dark truths her mother never wanted her to uncover and love so powerful she walks through time to save it.

Her magic is dormant.

When Aoife Burke rushes home after the unexpected death of her father, she discovers her mother has vanished amidst inexplicable circumstances. She returns to her childhood home to search for clues of her mother’s whereabouts but another shock awaits her. Sean O’Connell, the object of her girlhood crush, has purchased the family home. She senses Sean is hiding something from her, refuses to let her inside and does everything he can to keep her out. A determined Aoife breaks inside and stumbles upon an antique trunk in the attic. When she opens it, instead of the normal musty clothes and ancient letters, she finds a stairway leading into darkness. It calls to her and she cannot resist stepping into the trunk and onto that first stair where it leads her to magical truths her mother never wanted her to discover.

His magic is dangerous.

Sean O’Connell has been assigned by the Inter-dimensional Portal Protection Agency to keep Aoife and her mother out of Faery. But when she breaks into the house and disappears through the portal in the trunk—like her mother—he has no choice but to follow her, even though stepping into Faery will force him to face his past. Keeping her safe and out of the hands of the Wizard King also becomes a fight to save Aoife’s life from her own mother, who has discovered a time portal in Faery leading her back in time to alter her past mistakes, putting Aoife’s life in peril. Sean is willing to do anything to make sure she’s safe. Even if it means he has to tap into his dangerous magic to do it.

EXCERPT:

Present Day in the Human Realm

An incessant buzzing pulled Aoife Burke out of a dreamy, heavenly sleep. Her hand fumbled on the nightstand trying to silence the thing when a pillow crashed against her face, jarring her from half-asleep to fully awake.

“Make that phone stop already,” her dorm roommate growled. “It’s been going crazy for the last ten minutes.”

Still groggy and trying to wipe the sleep from her eyes, Aoife dropped the pillow to the floor and yanked the cell phone off the charger as it stopped buzzing. When the small screen lit up, she had four missed calls. All from her mother.

Her mother never called her, so to have four missed calls meant something terrible had happened.

She snapped to a sitting position, her fingers fumbling on the screen as she tried to get to the missed calls screen when it started to buzz again. She swiped the screen and answered.

“Mom?”

“Aoife, there you are at last. I’ve called to let you know that your father passed away.” Fiona’s even tone held no emotion whatsoever.

Aoife blinked, a sudden sickness piercing through her gut as her hand tightened on the phone. She hiccupped a breath and forced her mind to remember to inhale, exhale. “What do you mean he passed away? He’s dead?”

Instant regret and guilt poured through her. She’d skipped going home for Christmas three months prior because she couldn’t stand the thought of her mother giving her a frosty reception. When Aoife turned thirteen, her relationship with Fiona underwent a drastic change, something Aoife had never understood.

“Yes, I’m sorry. He’s gone.” Aoife detected a soft quiver in Fiona’s voice as she answered.

Her parents’ marriage had been rocky for a while too, but Aoife naively thought despite all that, they would always be together. Tears pooled in Aoife’s eyes as she clutched the phone and gulped in air, desperate for breath. Her roommate, Jenna, moved to perch on the edge of the bed, putting a comforting arm around her shoulders.

“I’m sorry to have to break the news to you this way, but there’s no time, really.” Fiona sniffed so quiet Aoife almost missed it. “Your sister is in Shanghai filming a movie but I called to let her know. I thought you needed to know, too.”

“Mom, wait—”

“I have to go before it’s too late.”

“Too late for what? Mom!”

But the line went dead.

Emotions or What's Love Got To Do With It?

I love reality television and watch it because I enjoy seeing how normal people interact in front of a camera. Some people think it’s scripted - I don’t. But I do believe that all reality TV producers want people on there show that will create drama. I’m amazed at what people reveal about themselves in front of a camera. Just like in fiction…you can’t make this stuff up.
An example - on Bachelor in Paradise - we have Ashley the cryer. (She promised that this season she would limit her crying to three times. She cried that much in the first hour over a man she loves, but he just wants to be friends. Move on Ashley!) We had Chad, who I can say went home the first night for reasons that are better left unsaid. On Couples Therapy… I see divorce in most of the couple's future. On Millionaire Matchmaker they had a man who had over three hundred plastic surgeries trying to make himself attractive. Scary!

So last week we were watching Millionaire Matchmaker. She had a woman on who didn’t show emotion. She had her own company and thought if she showed her emotions, then she appeared weak. Instead, she appeared cold. She refused to be vulnerable with anyone.
Which got me to thinking. Why as women are we perceived to be weak when we show our emotions? Being vulnerable is not a sign of weakness. We’re human.
When I was a kid, my grandmother would cry over the least little thing. It would embarrass me and whenever there was a family function, the tears flowed. Especially, if her sisters were there as they could stir up more stuff than a hurricane hitting the coast. Yet, I’ve been known to shed a tear over a commercial, a traumatic event, my loved ones or even anger. And no, I don’t think I’m weak. Personally, I think I’m living in the moment. If it calls for tears, then that doesn’t mean I’m fragile, it means I have empathy or I’m experiencing pain or someone has moved me. It makes me a human being.
Who doesn’t love a book that makes you feel all of your emotions? My favorite stories are usually one where I laughed out loud and shed a tear. MAKE ME FEEL. It’s not a bad thing. Some of us are very uncomfortable with feelings, emotions, but frankly, I think it’s what life is about. We’re involved. We’re in the moment.
Love is the greatest emotion on earth.
Sometimes we’re sad, sometimes we’re happy and sometimes we want to escape from our own realities into a world where you know there will be a happy ending. Where characters express their emotions and are not perceived as weak - but rather strong.
How did Millionaire Matchmaker help this woman? She didn’t. The woman went on two dates, found these very nice men lacking and refused to acknowledge, she had a problem. She walked off the show. Unable to be vulnerable, I fear this woman will face a life alone. I actually felt sad for her.
So what do you think? Are emotions a bad thing?  Do you like reality TV? Can’t wait for Survivor…

What did I learn from a show about spies? @sloanebcollins #amwriting #amreading #plottingprincesses

What lesson did I learn from a spy show?
My husband & I started watching a 6 part spy series the other day, "The Night Manager" on AMC. It's good, and we like it, but we were about 40 minutes in to the first episode when something happened, and he said "Finally. Now the story is moving along."
I need to post that on my laptop so I always remember to keep the action going in the books I write.

I don't have a lot of time to read, so it's usually on the train to/from work, or a few minutes on my lunch break. There are some books I've read lately that it's ok to read snatches here and there. I can pick it back up and continue on. A short book may take several days to finish. Last week I read "Falling Into Bed with a Duke" by Lorraine Heath. I read 387 pages in less than 2 days. It was so awesome and compelling I had a hard time putting it down, so I read every minute I could (and almost missed my stop twice!).
That's how I want to write. To keep the action up so readers don't want to set my book down, they want to see how it turns out. And to fall in love with my characters. (Yes, I fell hard for Lorraine's duke...and the woman he wanted to be with desperately!)

Back to that mini-series we started watching. We got through 3 episodes on Sunday, and while the story has progressed, there are long stretches where I keep expecting the other shoe to drop, but don't get the payout.
Note to self: don't disappoint the readers!  Keep the story moving, throw in some twists and turns to keep the reader's attention.
Side note about that show on TV: while I know Hugh Laurie is British, after watching him on "House" for so many years, it's weird hearing him speak in an English accent.
I'm in a critique group that is awesome and so very supportive. Just last week they pointed out a few sections in which I need to ramp up the action. I don't need bombs exploding or people dying in my stories, but I need to write so it's as if the reader is living the story.

I don't write about spies (yet), I do want to write compelling stories about characters who are exciting and fun to read.
And just because my kitty Oliver looked so cute and adorable this morning on my way out, I'm sharing this with you here.
Readers: what types of books and movies do you like? Do you stay within the same genres?
Authors: what important lesson have you learned from a movie or TV show?

Michelle Miles: I Need a Netflix Intervention

Now that Once Upon A Time, Person of Interest, Game of Thrones and Outlander are all over for the season (or in the case of POI forever...*cry*), I find myself binge watching Netflix like I binge eat Blue Bell chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

I've been on a quest to watch every Star Trek: The Next Generation episode since I missed the last three seasons back when the show was on (it premiered in 1987 if that gives you a frame of reference). Husband was out of town for the weekend which meant there was a lot of STTNG playing on the TV. I spent my Friday night eating tacos, watch Star Trek and playing MajorMUD (a text based game similar to D&D and another post for another day) with my brother and sister-in-law firmly cementing my evening in the 1990s. Good times. Only I didn't have a great glass of cabernet in the 90s.

I made it through season 6 and started the last season on Sunday. I find myself both excited and a little sad that the show will be ending soon only because that means I will have finally seen all 176 episodes. I find the episodes that deal with Data and/or the Borg to be some of my favorite. Season 6 has been amazing. Of course yes I know I can always watch them again but there's something magical about seeing the episodes for the first time and not knowing how it's going to end.

I've already decided my next quest will be to watch all 173 episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine next. I guess my nerdom is really showing.

But I have a confession. Not only do I binge watch Star Trek, I've also gotten into Pretty Little Liars. This is my guilty pleasure. The husband pretends not to notice (even though I know he's ogling the girls) and I pretend not really like the show that it's merely for research purposes only.

My binge-watching isn't just limited to Netflix. I have all the streaming TV I can dream of at my fingertips thanks to the Roku. I also have Amazon Prime and have been catching up on Downton Abby. I've been watching it as fast as I can and only have one season left. Another show I'll be sad when I reach the end.

And when I get bored with all that, there's always baseball. We tend to watch a lot of Rangers during the summer (and a lot of Dallas Stars in the winter).

So what is your guilty pleasure you like to binge watch? Inquiring minds want to know!

Craftmaster - Finding old stuff in the parent's home #SOS #RB4U #MFRWorg #amcrafting

While cleaning out my parents’ garage with family, a brother in law unearthed a picture wrapped in white paper, rectanglular in shape. Passed to me to determine if giveaway or have siblings look at, I folded back the paper and squealed. My sisters came running. We found the crushed rock and gravel picture my mom had made.
This picture hung above the china cabinet in the dining room for many, many years. Then Mom replaced it with a homey scene. I guess I didn’t notice it was gone for a long while and when I did, thought she’d donated it (along with the horse head lamps).
Here’s what we found:

The scene is Oriental, a pagoda and tree. This one is unique because the leaves are tiles as are parts of the pagoda. A braided piece was glued and pinned, then specifically marked gravel was put in the section.
Fun—right?
I did some online research and found these craft kits were made by Mosette in the fifties and sixties. The subject matter of the gravel ones crossed the span of popular television characters, animals, the Last Supper, to exotic dancers. Craft Master manufactured paint by number kits as well. Most were sold through hobby and five and dime stores. Over the last ten plus years, I’ve seen many finished pictures at flea and antique malls. One even had tiny lights in it.
Kits came in many shapes and subject matter. Here’s a link on:  eBay
When I took this picture home, I had no idea what I’d do with it. Then something went boing! And I knew I had to put it in my son’s old room with the new bedding. The coral and pink are exactly what the room needed to pop. I’m thrilled my mom’s picture found a home.
Were you a paint by number fan? Do you dig the mosaic pictures?

Coming soon-Temporarily Insane? Yup, Hattie Cooks is in another hot mess and Allan is tangled up too. It's a Bad Job. Wrong love. And murder. Releases on September 9, but available for preorder at: TWRP

What are you waiting for? LOL

Cowboys Are Better Than Navy SEALS

Last month at the Lori Foster Readers and Authors Get Together, Sharon Hamilton and I wrangled over whether or not Cowboys or SEALS are better. Even a very cute young man took my side and told Sharon that Cowboys were better than SEALS. Then two weeks later I see Sharon had written a blog at Happy Ever After Blog listing the top 10 reasons why a Navy SEAL is better than a cowboy.
She’s thrown down the gauntlet and the game is on…so just for fun, here are my 10 reasons why a Cowboy is better than a Navy SEAL:
10) Cowboys smell of leather and horse and a manly scent that makes you go awwww…Seals they’re all wet.9) Cowboy hats shade their face and make them look mysterious. When a man tilts his head a certain way, you can’t see his eyes or know what he’s thinking.8) Who needs to jump out of an airplane when you can ride like the wind on the back of your favorite steed. 7) Cowboys don’t need all that fancy equipment that SEALS use. They are independent, strong men who use only what nature provides and their trusty six-shooter to save the day.6. Some Cowboys wear boots made from swamp things, but the historical Cowboy boots were made from leather that protected him from rattlesnakes.5. SWCC boat? Why would a Cowboy make his horse endure getting on a boat? But he can ride across a desert, swim a stream or climb a mountain. 4. Tats? Historical Cowboys didn’t need tats? Contemporary Cowboys they can have tats, but it doesn’t distract or make them into the strong men they are. They don’t need a badge to show their bravery. It’s all in their walk.3. If there’s trouble on his ranch  or someone is trying to steal his woman, he’s there to protect her. He takes care of his family and the people he cares about.2. There are no secrets with Cowboys. SEALS are sworn to secrecy.
And the No. 1 reason a Cowboy is better than a NAVY SEAL —A Cowboy can become a Navy SEAL if he chooses that lifestyle.
Navy SEALS are fabulous men, great heroes, but they’re in constant danger and gone from home a lot. Cowboys are at home protecting and nurturing and caring for their ranch and family.
So, Sharon Hamilton, Author of the Band of Bachelors, this is why Cowboys are better than Navy SEALS. Still, I would highly recommend you check out Sharon’s Navy SEALS, they are great heroes and wonderful stories.
If you’re looking for a Cowboy…A quick read, I just released Ace’s Bride in Debra Holland’s Kindle World. Ace became one of my favorite heroes, because he’s such a sweet, gentle, yet strong hero. And yes, he’s a Cowboy.
The Past Collides With the Future Creating Mail-Order Bride Sparks
After being gone for years, Mick ‘Ace’ Anderson ordered himself a mail-order bride and returned home to Morgan’s Crossing, Montana. But everything has changed at home. His reason for ordering himself a bride is dead, his brother and father have both remarried and Mick is hiding his alter ego, Ace, the gambler from his family. If things couldn’t get worse, his mail-order bride is right out of the past he’s trying to keep hidden.
Emily Black, or Lady Melody as she’s known in the saloon, is running from a much too ambitious fan who wants to make her his own caged singing bird. Realizing the only way to escape her over zealous suitor is to become unavailable, she signs up with a mail-order bride agency. But imagine her surprise when the man who lifts the veil at her wedding is non other than the attractive gambler in the saloon where Lady Melody sang.
Hiding from the past, can Mick and Emily start fresh or will the demons from the River Bottom Saloon follow them to Montana? And can the attraction they denied in Kansas City overcome their distrust and bring them together forever?

Saving Sarah Release - by Kathy Ivan

NEW RELEASE!
I wanted to share with the Plotting Princess readers that I have a new release that just went live. I was asked by Susan Stoker to participate in her Special Forces: Operation Alpha Kindle World launch. When somebody as hugely popular as Susan personally asked me to write a romantic suspense with paranormal elements -- well, I wasn't about to say no.  J  Saving Sarah is the result and I absolutely love this book. It has a curvy, spunky heroine and a sexy ex-SEAL hero!

Here's the blurb: Haunted by memories of war and strangely prophetic dreams, Gaston "Ranger" Boudreau spends his time alone in the Louisiana bayou he calls home. When fellow SEAL, Matthew "Wolf" Steel calls in a favor, Ranger can't refuse—a Boudreau always pays his debts.
Writer Sarah Sloane is in New Orleans on a mission, to find her missing sister. Unsure what she'll uncover, she needs somebody who knows the city—but more, she needs a bodyguard who can keep her safe. One sexy former Navy SEAL might be just the person for the job.
As Ranger's dreams evolve, the dangerous search for Sarah's sister becomes a race against the clock. Can they find her before it's too late, or will their quest cost more than one life?
NOTE: This is an Amazon exclusive, and is only available on their site.AMAZON LINK:  http://amzn.to/29WMMA8
