Edward Bernays, the Father of American Propaganda
Edward Bernays is considered the Father of American Propaganda. His writings on propaganda inspired Nazi Party leader Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment to be really good at his job. One of Bernays’ most influential corporate “accomplishments” occurred in the mid- to late-1940s, when he was hired by ALCOA (the Aluminum Company of America) to orchestrate a public relations campaign to convince political leaders and the public that it would be good if ALCOA’s highly toxic by-product (fluoride salts) were added to the nation’s drinking water supplies under the guise of preventing tooth decay in children. Bernays’ propaganda campaign worked like a charm, with many state legislatures (including my state of Minnesota) passing laws that compelled reluctant municipalities to fluoridate their water supplies with the waste product that had up until then been responsible for so much poisoned air, water, soil, food, vegetation, livestock and other living things surrounding ALCOA’s aluminum smelting plants.
The aluminum industry, with the help of the American Dental Association (which is still in denial about the serious neurotoxicity of the mercury in its dental “amalgam” fillings), was enabled to sell its otherwise unmarketable and poisonous by-product – and they made a profit to boot! Win-win-lose.
Bernays’ and ALCOA’s fluoride caper was just another example of how cunning mercenary lobbyists that work for sociopathic corporations can convince non-scientist legislators to do their bidding, especially if the politicians also accept campaign contributions from those often criminal enterprises! (It should be noted, by the way, that, in recent years, most of the highly caustic fluoride powder that is purchased by American municipalities like Duluth comes from the toxic smokestacks of the phosphate fertilizer industry [rather than from the aluminum industry] and that the handlers of the fluoride powder need to wear hazmat suits.) . . .

A Seongju, South Korea, April 26 datelined news-report by Yonhap said:
“Six trailers carrying the radar and other equipment for a U.S. THAAD missile defense battery entered the deployment site at a golf course in South Korea early Wednesday, sparking a clash between police and villagers.”
The report was headlined “THAAD equipment enters deployment site in S. Korea amid clash between police, residents”.

Philosopher and sociologist Herbert Marcuse uses One Dimensional Man to explain how advanced industrial society has caused human beings to lose their individuality, their ability to dissent and their ability to control their own destiny.
He blames this on a pernicious “false consciousness” that pervades western society. Largely thanks to modern education and the mass media, citizens are pre-conditioned to accept security and material comfort (labor-saving devices, relaxing, having fun, accumulating status symbols etc) as a substitute for self-determination.
In other words, modern man becomes so comfortable he can’t imagine any other way of life. In Marcuse’s words, the ruling elite “removes the need for liberation by making servitude palatable.”
According to Marcuse, the majority of the population are systematically trained to think the thoughts their political and corporate masters want them to think. This results in enormous pressure to conform to public opinion, and any dissent, genuine opposition or negative thinking are viewed as extremely threatening. Marcuse refers to this pervasive and systematic ideological indoctrination as “non-terroristic totalitarianism”.
He writes at length about the “false needs” superimposed on Americans by corporate interests seeking to control and suppress them. He also writes about the tendency of our universal indoctrination to merge opposing forces and ideas, ie the de facto merger of the Republican and Democratic Party, the collusion of labor unions with big business and the mass media’s transformation of class society into a one happy homogeneous mass of consumers.
As Orwell portrays so vividly in 1984, opposing concepts are merged. Worsening oppression and loss of civil liberties is portrayed as “freedom” from an external threat (ie “communism,” “socialism” or “terrorism”); destruction of nature is portrayed as “productivity”; and regression (loss of moral values and personal competence) is portrayed as “growth.”
Marcuse also writes at length about the effect of mass communications in homogenizing art, literature, politics, religion and philosophy as advanced industrialized society transforms all of them them into commodities.

The state of Nevada is taking a new approach to tackling the rising price of prescription drugs with a new bill.
The bill, introduced in March by state Senator Yvanna Cancela, has already faced opposition from lobbyists and nonprofit patient groups that disagree with the bill’s approach to reining in prescription drug spending.
Nevada is one of 23 states with proposed legislation to take on the rising cost of prescription drugs. But unlike others that focus on drug prices in a general sense, Cancela’s bill focuses on two specific groups of drugs that are used to treat diabetes: insulin and biguanides.
It’s the latest milestone in government actions at the local, state, and national levels that attempt to change the way we spend money on prescription drugs.

Colombia: ‘Chiquita Papers’ Expose How CEOs Funded Right Wing Death Squads

A new release of the sensitive internal records of Chiquita Brands International, the U.S. banana giant that funded right-wing paramilitary death squads in Colombia, dubbed the “Chiquita Papers,” reveals new information about the exact role individual Chiquita executives played in bankrolling terror in the South American country.
The new records reveal, for the first time, the identities and roles of Chiquita executives like Robert F. Kistinger, head of Chiquita’s Banana Group based in Cincinnati, Ohio, who both approved and oversaw years of payments to groups such as the now-defunct far-right paramilitary organization the United Self Defence Forces of Colombia, better known by its Spanish acronym AUC.
The investigation found that Kistinger viewed the payments as a “normal expenditure,” and like the purchase of things such as fertilizers or agrichemicals, saw them as “an ongoing cost” of the company’s business operations. The investigation also identified the exact members of Chiquita’s board of directors, the corporate security team, regional and country operations manager, accountants and internal auditors, attorneys and third-party agents who carried out the payments over the years.
The AUC was responsible for years of violent terror, leading a coordinated campaign of assassinations and massacres aimed at unionists, political activists, public officials and others perceived as guerrilla supporters. By Chiquita’s own account, between 1997 and 2004, the company issued at least 100 payments to the AUC totaling some US$1.6 million.
The collusion between the right-wing death squad and Chiquita is being increasingly uncovered as families of the victims of paramilitary violence seek justice through the latest lawsuit against the corporation.
One of the documents also reveals that Chiquita, through its Colombian affiliates, not only made payments to the AUC and other paramilitary groups, but also to the country’s two largest rebel armies, the FARC and the ELN, between 1989 and 1997. The finding, the result of a Special Litigation Committee report investigating whether Chiquita violated the U.S. anti-terrorism statute, underlines the fact that the company financed Colombia’s war from all sides for decades in order to protect its bottom line.
According to the report, Chiquita began payments to the FARC and ELN around 1989, but later slowly phased them out as right-wing paramilitary groups gained strength. The payments to guerrilla armies ended around 1997, but the company continued payments to death squad groups until 2004. . .
