Trump Taxes Solar Imports in Biggest Blow To Renewables Industry

The Solar Energy Industries Association has projected tens of thousands of job losses in a sector that employed 260,000.

Iowa Climate Science Education

In the biggest blow he’s dealt to the renewable energy industry yet, President Donald Trump decided on Monday to slap tariffs on imported solar panels.

The U.S. will impose duties of as much as 30 percent on solar equipment made abroad, a move that threatens to handicap a $28 billion industry that relies on parts made abroad for 80 percent of its supply. Just the mere threat of tariffs has shaken solar developers in recent months, with some hoarding panels and others stalling projects in anticipation of higher costs. The Solar Energy Industries Association has projected tens of thousands of job losses in a sector that employed 260,000.

The tariffs are just the latest action Trump has taken that undermine the economics of renewable energy. The administration has already decided to pull the U.S. out of the international Paris climate agreement, rolled back Obama-era regulations on power plant-emissions and passed…

WiFi Refugees

WiFi Refugees

RT (2017)

Film Review

This documentary explores the condition known as electrosensitivity syndrome, as well as the lives of three Americans struggling to adjust to the condition. Electrosensitivy syndrome, which has no known treatment, has emerged in the last decade with the massive increase in microwaves from cellphones, cellphone towers and WiFi routers that bombard all of us daily.

The various symptoms described by victims include dizziness, nausea, mental fogginess, fatigue, light sensitivity, headaches and pins and needles and/or burning sensations of the skin. Most sufferers spend two to three years going from doctor to doctor before accidentally discovering that they vanish when patients isolate themselves from synthetic microwave radiation.

Two moved into rooms lined with special metallic foil or graphite-rich Wi-Shield paint. A third moved to Green Bank West Virginia, a nationally designated Radio Quiet Zone. In Green Bank, microwave transmissions are strictly limited to facilitate scientific research and military intelligence.

The documentary concludes by examining scientific evidence linking heavy microwave to an increased incidence of cancer, autism, Alzheimer’s, heart problems and DNA damage. The World Health Organization has classified synthetic microwave radiation as posing the same level of cancer risk as lead and asbestos.

Children seem to be especially susceptible. For this reason, France bans all WiFi use in kindergartens and primary schools and strictly limits its use in secondary schools.

Scientists are also concerned about weak regulations limiting microwave exposure. At present the US limit – of 500 microwatts per square centimeter per device – is more than 50 times that of all other countries for total microwave exposure.

Owing to heavy lobbying by the telecommuncations industry, the US government has discontinued all research funding into the health effects of microwave radiation. The advent of 5G technology – which would place a cellphone transmitter at street level on every third lamppost – is of special concern to researchers and activists.

Fundamental rights to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and eat safe food

Appalachia’s environmental challenges – the fundamental right to clean air, water and food.

CatholicNetwork.US

By Nicholas F. Stump

The ConversationDo we have a fundamental right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and eat safe food? The idea of environmental human rights is receiving growing attention worldwide, driven by our global ecological crisis. But the United States has lagged behind in codifying these rights into laws and in successfully furthering them.

While this may seem like an issue for legal scholars, it has very real importance for regions like Appalachia, where I work. Coal mining has caused widespread ecological and health damage here for more than a century, alongside other industries such as chemical manufacturing and, recently, natural gas production.

Many Americans elsewhere view Appalachia’s environmental health conditions with ambivalence or outright classist indifference, and some have written us off as a “national sacrifice zone.” But our environmental struggles echo conflicts over the Dakota Access pipeline, the Niger River…

‘Executed’ North Koreans return to life

RT | January 21, 2018

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is famous in Western media for executing people that fall out of his favor – though some seem to have found the knack of returning from the dead.

Reports regularly surface on Kim’s latest means of execution, ranging from the relatively mundane firing squad to the theatrical, or even cartoonish – such as feeding foes to packs of starving dogs or roasting them with flame-throwers.

The pop star and ‘former lover’

The most recent case is North Korean popstar Hyon Song-wol, spotted alive and well in South Korea on Sunday despite having reportedly been killed in a purge of singers, musicians and dancers back in 2013.

The performer was reportedly executed along with 11 others, including other members of her group, the Moranbong Band, the head of Unhasu Orchestra, and several dancers from the Wangjaesan Light Music Band.

The 12 victims had allegedly been accused of, among other offenses, recording themselves having sex and selling the footage. The reported victims hadn’t been seen since, until Hyon Song-wol, with whom Kim had reportedly been romantically entwined, publicly resurfaced on Saturday to inspect Olympic venues in South Korea ahead of the Winter Games.

The military chief

Back in 2016, N. Korean army chief Ri Yong Gil was reportedly executed for “factionalism, misuse of authority, and corruption.” As with a lot of information emanating from the isolated country, this turned out to false.

South Korean intelligence officials seemed to take his removal as head of the army as confirmation of his execution. The only problem was that a couple of months later Ri Yong Gil apparently returned from the dead, with an array of new senior-level positions, when he attended the Workers’ Party Congress in May that year.

The uncle ‘executed by a pack of dogs’

Apparently Kim really has it in for his older relatives, if Western media reports are to believed. So much so, it seems, that Kim was willing to execute his own uncle, by setting a pack of 120 starving dogs on him as part of yet another purge back in 2014.

Though it appears that Jang Song Thaek was indeed executed, the ‘ripped apart by dogs’ story was a complete fabrication that first raised its head on a satirical Chinese microblogging website.

The aunt ‘poisoned on request’

Further to ‘feeding his uncle to dogs’, as mentioned above, he reportedly then turned his murderous gaze towards his aunt, Kim Kyong-hui.

Kyong-hui, Kim’s father’s sister and the wife of uncle Jang Song Thaek, was reportedly executed by poisoning on the leader’s orders.

However, once again these reports turned out to be false. South Korean news agency Yonhap reported last year that she is very much alive, although she is being treated for illnesses ranging from depression to cancer.

Erdogan Accuses Allies of Sending 1000s of Planeloads and Truckloads of Arms to Kurds

RT | January 21, 2018

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has turned on Ankara’s allies, insinuating that the US in particular has been providing massive military support to Kurdish YPG in Syria.

In a speech to his ruling AK Party Erdogan said that ‘some allies’ of Turkey had provided the YPG Syrian Kurdish militia with 2,000 planeloads and 5,000 truckloads of weapons.

“Now, apart from 5,000 trucks, there are weapons and ammunition from around 2,000 planes.” the Turkish leader said. He also accused Ankara’s allies of dishonesty when they say that they do not provide weapons for “terrorists,” referring to Kurdish-linked YPG forces.

The president also vowed to hand over Afrin to its “real owners,” explaining that he aims to return 3.5 million refugees back to Syria from Turkey as soon as possible.

This weekend, Turkey began operation ‘Olive Branch’ against Kurdish forces in Afrin, deploying jets and land forces.

Two Great Roads: Infrastructure in the USA & China

US infrastructure continues to decay as it marches towards a low wage police state.

Astute News

As the end of 2017 approached, the Chinese Ministry of Transportation announced its plan for the next year. In 2018, China intends to build over 200,000 kilometers (124274.238 miles) of new roads in rural areas. The result will be to connect 5,000 rural villages to asphalt roadways and bus services. Furthermore, the Transport Ministry intends to renovate 180,000 kilometers (111846.815 miles) of roads, as well as restoring 2,500 bridges. In the last five years, China has constructed 1.275 million kilometers (776713.9903 miles) of news roads.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the opposite is taking place. According to Wired Magazine, municipalities across the country are un-paving roads due to budgetary concerns. In order to save money, rural towns in 27 different states have removed asphalt and restored dirt roads. For example, the city of Montpelier in Vermont, saved $120,000 by removing asphalt from a number of its roads. The process…

Colorado Lawmakers Resist Sessions’ War on Marijuana

Colorado lawmakers vow to resist federal attack on state marijuana laws.

Mountain Republic

Colorado lawmakers are resisting US Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ change to the way states deal with legal pot.

On Thursday, Sessions announced he would rescind an Obama-era memo which eased federal enforcement in states that legalized recreational and medical marijuana.

The change allows US Attorneys in states where pot is legal to “decide how aggressively to enforce longstanding federal law prohibiting it,” reports the Associated Press.

Several lawmakers in Colorado, where citizens voted to legalize marijuana in 2012, say the change is an encroachment on states’ rights and the people’s will.

Sessions’ move comes only three days after California officially legalized recreational marijuana.
