Marie Louise McCormack was born in Dublin on 2nd May 1960. She grew up in Sandymount, where she attended Roslyn Park school. She went on to study languages and also did a TEFL course. During her college years she attended The Italian Cultural Institute and the Alliance Française. She received three scholarships from the Italian Institute which sent her to Perugia and Padova, as well as diplomas from both.

She moved across the water to Italy in 1983 and is still living there. Because she's been there more than half of her life, she considers herself an ‘Irish Venetian’. She is married and has got two children, Nicoletta and Matteo.
