Hang in There

A sign I passed by on 11th Street, in the West Village. This building has had great Halloween decorations the past couple of years (maybe for more years, but my memory only goes back two apparently). They also have a lovely garden (scroll down to see). Thank you for the encouragement!

Social Distancing

A picture of the pier at Christopher Street near where I live went viral on Saturday. It showed people packed together, and not wearing masks. So I went down there yesterday to see for myself. I had gone for a walk on Saturday past the lawns around Battery Park City, and it was packed there as well, but the groups managed to keep six feet apart from each other.

I think part of what was going on in the Christopher Street picture was it was looking down the pier lengthwise, which doesn’t show the space between people. It squooshes the depth of field. But viewed from the side you can see how far apart people were sitting.

When I went down there yesterday people were sitting at least six feet apart. But part of that might have been because there was a greater police presence due to the picture having gone viral. (Scroll down for more pictures.)

I didn’t take a picture of the long view, to show how crowded it can appear, but here is the side view.

I also saw the police walking through the crowd giving out masks. Here’s another thing I witnessed: some people said no thank you to a mask, because they already had one. They had just taken them off when they sat down. I might have done the same thing had I decided to take a break on the grass. So while it might look like all these people are going around with masks, that’s not entirely accurate.

Another shot of giving out masks. I almost asked for one, because free stuff!!

Social Distancing

I’m no longer titling these posts Virus and the City. One, because it was kinda tired to begin with, and because I’m tired to typing it in! It’s all virus all the time here, anyway. I took a nice long walk yesterday because it’s a lovely day. Believe it or not, even though it looks crowded, I looked carefully and for the most part, each group is at least six feet apart.

The runners are still not wearing masks though.

Virus and the City: Signs

Someone drew this on a piece of wood boarded up a store. I love this. They must know that the person they made it for would walk by and see it. Oh, I just remembered someone once did something like that for me! They painted something on the street in front of my building and wrote, “For Stacy.” I loved it!! It took many years to fade away. I was so sad when I couldn’t see it any longer. This was an ex-boyfriend who I’m friends with to this day.

Virus and the City: Social Distancing

I passed by this gourmet grocery store. One person in this picture was calling (311, presumably) to complain that the people on this line were not all properly social distancing. As I walked by I heard, “Some people are 2 feet apart …”

Virus and the City: Reading

The first issue of my friend’s new literary journal, 34 Orchard, is ready!

“With cover art by Brandon Kawashima, this issue features artists from as far away as Greece, Nigeria and the UK–as well as right here in the US and delivers visceral work that unpacks the things we don’t want to admit are in our basements.

“The downloadable PDF is designed so that it can be printed on double-sided paper for easy reading like a print magazine.

“The issue is free, but there is a donation link should you choose to contribute.”

Enjoy!

This is a picture of the smallpox hospital on Blackwell’s Island, courtesy of email from Judith Berdy, the President for the Roosevelt Island Historical Society. I’m so used to seeing it as only ruins.

Virus and the City: Graves

I passed by Trinity Church which has a very old graveyard. A morbid shot I guess, considering what we’re all going through. But I’m drawn to the death angels pictures carved at the top of so many.

Virus and the City: Walking

I walked over five miles yesterday, and still my weight went up! Could be worse. I GUESS. Seen on my walk, The Fearless Girl sculpture by Kristen Visbal, opposite the Stock Exchange, properly masked.

Virus and the City: Non-Essential

Well, I could do without the gunshot graphic, but otherwise yeah.

Virus and the City: Chinatown

From my walk yesterday. It looks busy in this shot, but it was not. Everything is closed except places that sell food. It looks like I happened to press the shutter just when there was a car and a few people in the shot.
