About this excerpt: Caroline has a revelation.

ENJOY THIS SNIPPET: 
Caroline's gaze fell upon the young man on the horse. Their eyes locked. Her cheeks warmed, and some indefinable spark passed between them that heated her body. Oh, she had noticed several handsome guards under her father's command, but this man was different. His malachite eyes spoke of duty, the same sense of duty she harbored, yet hinted at a desire for mischief. His cheekbones were sharp, giving him an almost lupine appearance. He had an air of authority about him, a commanding presence that demanded respect.

His square jaw tensed visibly, and her gaze drifted down his leg. Her arrow had ripped his riding pants and blood trickled from a small flesh wound.

Romanian unification is on the horizon and the spirited Crown Princess of Carpathia, Caroline, would prefer to ride horses and archery to embroidery and dancing. Complicating her life is her recent discovery that she's a witch.

Happy Halloween 2015: History of Jack-O-Lanterns! #halloween

Did you know the first jack-o-lanterns weren’t make out of pumpkins?  When I told my 9 year-old son, Joe, he was surprised.  Nope, they were turnips.
The Irish used to make jack-o-lanterns out of turnips and put them out on All Hallow’s Eve to scare away the evil spirits and specifically, Stingy Jack.  They didn’t just hallow out turnips either. They also made jack-o-lanterns out of: rutabagas, gourds, potatoes and beets. In the 1800’s Irish immigrants came to America and discovered the pumpkin.  Since then, the squash has been a favorite to make jack-o-lanterns. 
So is Stingy Jack the guy that the jack-o-lantern is supposed to keep at bay?
Stingy Jack is an old Irish legend.  He was a miserable man who drank too much and loved playing tricks on anyone who passed his way – including his mom and even the Devil.
He tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree then he placed crosses around the trunk of the tree. Since the Devil couldn’t touch the crosses, he was stuck in the tree.  Stingy Jack struck a deal with the Devil.  The Devil wouldn’t take his soul when Jack died.  Then Jack removed the crosses the Devil got out of the tree.

When Jack finally died he met St. Peter at the gates of Heaven.  St. Peter told Jack he lived a miserable life on Earth and was very cruel.  Jack couldn’t get into Heaven.  So he went to Hell and asked the Devil if he could come in.  The Devil said no.
Can you imagine?  You can’t get into Heaven – or Hell!
Jack fussed with the Devil who took pity on him and gave him an ember from Hell to help Jack light his way as he traveled through the Netherworld which had no light. Jack stuck his ember in his turnip and even to this day, roams the Earth since he doesn’t have a resting place using a “Jack-O-Lantern.”

Finn tried not to gawk at the castle before him. The structure appeared like a perfect square with three levels. Torches lit each distinctive floor. No flag flew from the top, but with guards posted at the entrances, Finn was convinced the queen was in residence.

Ryal escorted him through the main gate and Finn entered the great hall. People bustled about, serving food and ale. Men sat at tables, talking and gambling. To the rear, an empty throne on a raised dais peered over the room.

Darius whispered instructions to a nearby foot soldier who raced off. Drums pounded a strong beat. Finn turned in the direction of the drummers, recognizing the beat from earlier in the evening. Unease slithered down his spine.

Darius, the pretty boy, motioned for Finn to proceed down the center aisle. "Queen Aithne will come out once you kneel before the throne."

Finn grunted. He felt like a lamb being led to a slaughter, but he complied anyway, driven by an instinctual feeling he couldn't explain. Servants stopped to stare as he walked past. Men at the tables quieted. Finn furrowed his brow. Aithne? Wasn't that the name of the prince's daughter?

He kept quiet, only drawing a breath to tamp down his rising anxiety. He never cared to be restricted. Giving up control and submitting to another's will made him uncomfortable. His parents lost their lives when they trusted the soldiers from the east who invaded their homes. Finn swore he'd never trust anyone so blindly after that – but he had.

Reluctantly, he had put on the mask, allowed himself to be taken by Darius, and had his wrists bound, and he'd hardly protested. Why? He needed to find the prince's daughter, but a part of him hoped to find the woman of his visions, too.


Darius placed his hand on Finn's shoulder and pushed him to his knees. Finn snarled his displeasure. Darius had a problem with him – but what?

The side door opened. A handmaiden stepped out. The sweet, sensual scent of lavender trailed after her.

"Head down," Darius whispered into Finn's ear.

Finn swore the first chance he had, he'd give Darius a taste of his fists. He felt the woman's presence in front of him before glancing up.

"Darius, rise with our...guest." Her voice was low and commanding.

As Darius tugged Finn to his feet, Finn found himself gazing into seductive, soulful emerald eyes. The woman of his visions was real and right in front of him!

She raked her gaze over him from head to toe, surveying his appearance before finding his face. She said nothing, only cocking her head a bit and smiling, revealing that amazing dimple. As their expressions fixed on each other, Finn sensed a heated and sensuous light pass between them. She licked her lips, and his pulse quickened.

A loud, deliberate crack pierced the air.

Caroline spun in the direction of the noise, effortlessly drawing an arrow and hitching it
to her bow. A horse neighed, and bushes about fifty meters ahead of her rustled.

Someone was there, watching. But who? A blast of adrenaline rocketed through her. She wasn't about to let her guard down. It wasn't wise of her to be looking for Edwina's scarf with the Sigmaringens due to arrive today.

Spying a hint of color among the leaves, she let the arrow fly, determined to protect her ladies.

Autumn in California 2015 #autumn

The other day I went with my younger son to pick Pumpkins from the Pumpkin Patch.  Sadly, our favorite ranch, Lombardi, was closed this year.  They didn't have enough water to water and grow their plants.  A big bummer.

Anyhoo...we got to Filmore and found the PumpkinLiner.  It was a 45 minute train ride to the pumpkin patch! How could we refuse?

It doesn't really look like autumn here in California, does it?  No rustic leaves, no overcast skies, no linger fog.  But that's okay.  This is what Autumn in Southern California looks like.  It's warm (even a bit humid today) sunny, and plenty of green leaves on the trees.  But we do have pumpkins.  Enjoy the following pictures from Lombardi Ranch..

What catches our eye first? I thought I'd explore how romantic titles suck us in and dare us to read them.

Why did you pick up that romance story? Was it the title? Did it intrigue you?
Coming up with a title for your story is never easy. The main ingredient: Your title should never be dull. After all, what entices you more to read: "Gone with the Wind" or "The Plantation?"
A title should be easy to remember and appropriate to your story. "Romeo and Juliet" is a good example. It's easy and puts the main characters front and center.
Everyone knows "Pretty Woman." Julia Roberts is a hooker with a heart of gold. The title is easy to remember and describes Roberts' character, Vivian, inside and out – she truly is a pretty woman. The challenge (or conflict) is finding a way out of her predicament.
The best titles reflect the tone of the story and are found in the context of the writing. The more clear and clever the title, the better.

A story title represents your work to the rest of the world so pick well and show off your interesting side.

Caroline swung her leg over the saddle and dismounted from Selene, her horse. It had to be nearby, and she was determined to find it before the Sigmaringens arrived. Her ladies, Jane and Louise, slid out of their saddles as well. 

Jane collected Selene's reins, "Your mother would banish you to the embroidery room for a week if she knew you were here."

"Well, if I have my way, she'll never know the details about this little adventure." Caroline peered at Jane over her shoulder, then lifted her bow. 

"You have our confidences, of course," Louise said.

Caroline smiled, "Good. Let's start poking around. Leave no stone or log unturned."

Book Review: 12 Sharp by Janet Evanovich #bookreview

Vinnie’s been writing a lot of bonds which means more work at the agency. On top of this, the agency’s top bailsman, Ranger, goes missing. It’s a problem Stephanie doesn’t need. While tracking down her FTA’s, Stephanie gets more drawn into Ranger’s troubles. When a “wife” shows up claiming to be looking for him, Stephanie knows it’s serious. She discovers Ranger’s daughter has been kidnapped and when his “wife” is found dead, Stephanie realizes a deadly imposter is after Ranger’s life. If Stephanie isn’t sharp enough, her friends just might lose their lives. Evanovich’s writing is engaging, witty, and sharp. She’s an easy, enjoyable read with characters that will have you laughing and crying with them.There’s a mini plot with Sally Sweet and Lula which provides more lighter moments in contrast to the heavier, nail-biting suspense involving Stephanie and Ranger. As usual, the supporting cast entertains with delightful charm. “Twelve Sharp” is a cozy mystery with romantic elements and heart-pounding suspense. It’s a race against time that will keep the reader engaged and turning the pages. A worthy edition to the Stephanie Plum series.
