Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) was an English socialist & feminist who daringly fought for women’s right to vote.

She grew up in a politically active family and married Richard Pankhurst in 1878 who was a barrister supporting women’s suffrage. Their daughters were also politically involved, & in 1903, the WSPU (Women’s Social & Political Union) was founded in the Pankhursts’ house.

At the beginning, the WSPU followed smooth way of acting but as the women were ignored, they decided to break the law (smashing windows, cutting telephone lines, spitting at police and politicians, sending letter bombs, chaining themselves to railings or blowing up houses) to call attention. Some of the WSPU members left the association because of these practices, among them were both of her daughters. Emmeline and her friends were frequently sent in prison where they were tortured. Indeed, they went on hunger strike & were force-fed (which was a very violent practice).

She entirely dedicated herself to the women’s suffrage: she sold her house in Manchester & began an itinerant lifestyle, living with friends in hotels & with only a few possessions. In 1910, when her son died, she buried him & then had the force to address 5,000 people.

In 1918 the Representation of the People Act granted votes for women over the age of 30. Ten years later, the Act extended the franchise to all women over 21.

Today, she is remembered as one of the most influential & important feminine figure of the XXth century.

(& even Dr. Who talks about her in season 3, episode 1.)
