A map of the Battle of Sedan (September 1, 1870). At Sedan, the Prussians and their allies encircled the French forces and overwhelmed them. The French had been attempting to reorganize for a counter-attack following a series of Prussian victories throughout August. The loss at Sedan destroyed the French Empire (Emperor Napoleon III was captured and went into exile shortly thereafter) but the war, which had only begun that July, would drag on into 1871. This was due to a the declaration of a new French republic and the creation of a Government of National Defense in Paris, which ultimately rejected German peace offers on the grounds of territorial integrity (particularly over demands that France relinquish the territory of Alsace, a Germanic region acquired by France in the 17th Century). The Prussians and their allies would go on to besiege Paris and eventually triumph, leading to the creation of a unified German Empire under Prussian hegemony.

A 1875 painting by Édouard Detaille depicting French cavalry standing guard over captured Bavarian soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871).

The cavalryman on the left is an uhlan, a form of lancer originally of Polish origin. Next to him (center-left) appears to be an officer. To the right are cuirassiers, heavy cavalry equipped with a breastplate (cuirasse). More uhlans fill the background, showing their lances.
