A. P. Kalganov poses with his son and granddaughter for a portrait in the industrial town of Zlatoust in the Ural Mountain region of Russia. The son and granddaughter are employed at the Zlatoust Arms Plant - a major supplier of armaments to the Russian military since the early 1800s. Kalganov displays traditional Russian dress and beard styles, while the two younger generations have more Westernized, modern dress and hair styles.

Jacket made of heavy wool in wine and cream. Tight fitting, hip-length jacket with stand-up collar. Front attached vest is ornately trimmed with maroon machine embroidery. The same trim is found on the shoulder, bottom of sleeve and on the back. Skirt of the jacket is shaped to fit over a bustle. c. 1890s.

Shota Rustaveli presents his poem to Queen Tamar.
Rustaveli was the 12th Century author ofThe Knight in the Panther's Skin, an epic tale of adventure, chivalry, and love that is widely regarded as Georgia's national epic. It tells the tale of Avtandil, a knight of Arabia, who finds a befriends the Indian prince Tariel (the eponymous knight in the panther's skin). Together they set off to rescue Tariel's beloved, the daughter of the King of India, from evil spirits that have imprisoned her in an impenetrable fortress.
The Knight in the Panther's Skin is a wonderful read, and you can find an English translation online here.
