Photo of a Finnish soldier with a Molotov cocktail, c. winter 1939-40.

The famous Molotov cocktail, an improvised incendiary device consisting of a glass bottle filled with gasoline, was used by the Finns during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union (November 30, 1939, to March 13, 1940). It was named to mock the Soviet Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, who claimed that Soviet cluster bombs being used against Finnish cities were airdrops of food. The “Molotov cocktail” became Finland’s reply to these Soviet “Molotov breadbaskets”, and was used against Soviet tanks.

‘A SUCCESS’

“Celeste, I wish you to give my compliments to Mrs. LaMode, and tell her that I think this dress her greatest triumph.”
“Yes, Madame. I have forgotten to tell you that she used the new FEATHER-BONE for the stays. It is certainly a beautiful fit.”

( Warren Featherbone Company advertising circular, 1888.)
