Planning the Grand Tour. Emil Brack (German, 1860-1905).
By the middle of the 19th century, railroads were changing the Grand Tour. The Englishman Thomas Cook offered the first packaged tours and opened travel up to the middle class. This not only led to more standardized lodgings and meals, but it also spurred wealthier travelers to seek out their own enclaves, like the French Riviera, away from the masses.
