181 years of Texas ~ Did you know…? “The bluebonnet is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland,” ~John Maguire. In 1901 BLUEBONNETS become the state flower of Texas. By 1934, it was ordered to delay mowing beside roadways in order to let the flowers grow. Now, TxDot sows about 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds each year. Snapping family pictures in the flowers is a tradition that’s gone on for many generations and is only illegal if you bother someone’s private property.

Texas: Big Bend

181 years of Texas ~ Did you know…? The first time I set foot in Mexico was through Big Bend National Park riding a burro (that picture’s for another time). How many types of rocks can be found in the park? Here’s your answer. Is there a lot of plant life? The answer. And what about the wildlife? Another answer. What book did I write about the park? THE CATTLEMAN.

Texas & the Chisholm Trail

181 years of Texas ~ Did you know…? The Chisholm Trail is named after a trader…not a cattleman? Jesse Chisholm, a half-Cherokee trader from Tennessee, originally created the trail as a means to transport his goods from one trading post to another. It’s estimated 5,000,000 head of Texas cattle were herded to Kansas over the Chisholm Trail.

Texas: Pioneer Plaza, Dallas

181 years of Texas ~ Did you know…? To commemorate Dallas’ beginnings… in 1995 the Cattle Drive was commissioned in Downtown Dallas? It’s worth a few minutes off the highway to experience the life size sculptures in Pioneer Plaza. [image error]

Texas: Wide Open Spaces
