New Release: Central Galactic Concordance Collection Come along, a millennium into the future… if you dare.

The Central Galactic Concordance government boasts 500 member planets and 200 years of prosperity, thanks to the sprawling Citizen Protection Service. The agency uses any means necessary to keep the peace, from allying with giant pharma corporations and political maneuvering, to secret black-box projects with darker purposes.

The CPS also employs minders—people with telepathic and telekinetic talents—for service and security, and covert operations.

Being a minder isn’t easy—they are followed by fear and prejudice. But being a “person of interest,” or a person of use to the CPS is even worse. Throw in corruption, hidden agendas, planet-sized secrets, and space battles…

Your only hope for survival is to know who your friends are… and keep them close.

Jump on board for the interstellar ride of a lifetime—read the first three books of this award-winning series today.

Excerpt from Minder Rising

Here’s a Free Excerpt from Minder Rising

In anticipation of the upcoming new release of The Central Galactic Concordance Collection, Books 1-3, I’m posting a series of excerpts from each of the books in the collection.

By the way, if you’re willing to post book reviews on Amazon and/or Goodreads, I’d be happy to send you a free copy of any of my books for review purposes. Drop me a line, or use the contact form.

Today’s excerpt is from Minder Rising (Central Galactic Concordance, Book 2), early in the book. Blurb: Lièrén Sòng, an injured covert agent on the galactic capital planet, must evade killers and make an impossible choice—save his own skin, or save Imara Sesay, an innocent woman, and her prodigy son. Can he discover who is subverting the mission of the Citizen Protection Service, before they fulfill their dark plans?

Excerpt from Minder Rising

Excerpt from Minder Rising

It had been disheartening to realize that with the death of his partner, his only friends now were Rayle and Imara. They’d shown more concern and care than people he’d known for years. Only his supervisor had sent a generic “get well soon” ping. To the overworked medical and therapy personnel, he was a CPS auth code and a barely remembered name. To everyone else, he was just another tourist on the metro.

And now, it looked like the capstone to this particularly lousy day was the bald man at the bar who’d been heavy-handedly hitting on Imara and getting nowhere. He was probably drawn by her pretty face and wide smile that invited laughter, and her crazy, coiled hair that always looked like it was on the verge of breaking free from its restraint. To Lièrén’s chagrin, he’d only noticed the situation because young Derrit had seen the trouble and was watching them like a hawk. Lièrén had a sinking feeling it would be more trouble than Derrit could handle.

Rule number one in covert field units like his was not to draw attention to himself or the unit, and rule number two was to follow rule number one. Lièrén had led anyone who asked to believe that his title of “field agent” was CPS-speak for “office twonk,” and that his unit’s mission had to do with trade support. Procedure said he should leave now, or conveniently fall asleep and see nothing, but the bald man’s haze of violent discord was slicing through Lièrén’s talent like a fistful of forceblades.

Derrit abruptly stood and began sidling toward the bar, focusing on his mother with the intensity of a laser beam. Lièrén’s headache flared, and second later, the bald man grabbed Imara’s hand. Lièrén sat, frozen in indecision.

In the blink of an eye, the bald man muttered something in what sounded like German, then stood and tried to drag Imara from behind the bar.

“Leave her alone!” shouted Derrit, closing in fast and latching onto the man’s arm.

The bald man snarled and backhanded the boy, sending him flying a meter or more into some chairs.

Today’s excerpt is from Pico’s Crush (Central Galactic Concordance, Book 3), early in the book. Blurb:

Excerpt from Pico's Crush

Excerpt from Pico's Crush

“Professor De Luna! Come meet my dad.”

Jerzi turned to see the famous professor of materials science who had inspired Pico to declare a study focus for her certificate. The woman was a little taller than mid-height, conservatively dressed in a long-sleeved, high-necked, dark jacket with half-tails, and her dark hair was scraped back away from her striking face. If she wore makeup on her light brown skin, it was subtle. She seemed familiar, somehow.

“Professor Andreina De Luna, this is my dad…”

“Commander Crush,” she said with a lopsided smile. “It’s a small galaxy.”

It was the use of his old unit nickname and her soft Spanish accent that finally sparked his memory. “Subcaptain Lightning. It certainly is.” Delight bloomed in him, and he grinned and held out a fist to her, thumb up. She bumped his knuckles twice with a fist of her own, once straight up and once turned sideways.

Pico looked back and forth at them, owl-eyed. “You know each other?”

Andra nodded. “Five years together as gunnin in the CGC Ground Division, Command’s Forward Intelligence Unit Zulu Six Echo.” She winked at him. “Your father was the best sniper we ever had.”

Jerzi felt himself redden, as if he was suddenly twelve years old. He ducked his head to hide it. “Thanks.”

He looked at her more closely, trying to reconcile the brash, volatile, very unconventional officer he’d known in the military with the sedate, contained woman in front of him. She was the picture of a dedicated academic, though her straight pants didn’t quite hide her muscular legs, and he suspected her shoes were more practical than they looked.

She’d apparently been thinking along the same lines. “You sure clean up good, Adams. Nice suit. Must have given the designer fits with all those extra muscles.” She winked at Pico, who smirked back.

He had no idea why women were interested in what he wore, but no way in hell was he getting into a discussion about clothes. “Materials science, huh? That’s what they’re calling boom-down these days?”

Andra’s eyebrow twitched. “Claro que sí. Of course. Sounds more dignified in the college brochure.”

“What’s boom-down?” asked Pico.

“Munitions. Explosions,” said Jerzi.

Excerpt from Overload Flux

Here’s a Free Excerpt from Overload Flux

In anticipation of the upcoming new release of The Central Galactic Concordance Collection, Books 1-3, I’m posting a series of excerpts from each of the books in the collection.

By the way, if you’re willing to post book reviews on Amazon and/or Goodreads, I’d be happy to send you a free copy of any of my books for review purposes. Drop me a line, or use the contact form.

Today’s excerpt is from Overload Flux (Central Galactic Concordance, Book 1), early in the book. Blurb: The only vaccine for a deadly galaxy-wide pandemic is missing… and the only ones who may be able to find it are Luka Foxe, a powerful talent on the verge of a meltdown, and Mairwen Morganthur, a security specialist hiding her extraordinary skills in a menial job.

Excerpt from Overload Flux

Excerpt from Overload Flux

Ground traffic throughout Etonver was legendarily bad, and Luka counted himself lucky that the current traffic snarl was so far making them only thirty minutes late for the afternoon appointment with the independent testing lab Zheer had found. They couldn’t fly a flitter into the restricted medical district air space near the lab, so they were stuck dealing with the chaos on the streets.

He was glad he’d chosen to sit up front with Morganthur. He often lost his temper in traffic, and her imperturbability at the stop-and-go progress made it less annoying to him. Her light overcoat, in boring company gray, hid a navy corporate suit, identical in cut to the green one she’d worn to the spaceport. He had the impression she valued practicality over style. He wouldn’t call her peaceful to be around, because he was too intrigued by her, but she was somehow calming. She was also the quietest person he’d ever met.

“Morganthur, when they assigned you to me, did they tell you not to talk?”

“No.” Her voice sounded low and rusty, as if she didn’t use it much.

A ground skimmer that was weaving through the lanes came within centimeters of scraping their side panel, but she smoothly adjusted their position to narrowly avoid it.

“Good,” he told her. “I’d hate to inhibit your natural garrulousness.”

She glanced at him with a raised eyebrow and quirked a corner of her mouth in what may have been a smile, but said nothing.

He laughed, delighted to discover she had a sense of humor. “I get the feeling you don’t do this very often.”

“Drive?”

“No, have a casual conversation.”

“No.” An opening in traffic had them going faster for a moment, but it didn’t last. Horns sounded constantly, but were muted in the quiet vehicle interior.

“Probably because you’ve been working the night shift and didn’t have anyone to talk to. Feel free to practice your conversational skills on me. It’ll distract me from obsessing about loose threads.” Of course, it wouldn’t keep him from being distracted by her instead. At least she wasn’t an obsession. Yet.

He couldn’t tell from her expression if she was trying to formulate a reply or was simply focused on traffic. After a long silence, she said, “I’m bad with words.”

“That’s what practice is for. Pretty soon, we’ll have you up to fifteen or twenty words at a time, maybe even two or three sentences in a row.”

In between lane changes, she glanced at him as if she was unsure if he was serious or not. Finally she said, “Loose threads?”

It was the first time she’d initiated conversation, so he didn’t mind that it was about work. It was a start.

New Boxed Set Coming Soon

New boxed set coming soon for your reading pleasure:

The Central Galactic Concordance Collection, Books 1-3

New boxed set coming soon - Central Galactic Concordance Books 1-3

Do you like boxed sets? I do, because I like to read series, and I like to read the books in the correct order. Even if the books are already conveniently numbered, it’s nice to have them all in one package, especially if you’re in a binge-reading mood. They’re also a hedge against unexpected delays, such as your flight has been canceled and now you suddenly have five hours to kill.

Since I now have 4½ books out in the Central Galactic Concordance space opera series, and the first three books sort of go together, I thought they’d make a nice ebook collection. It’ll have an introductory price of $5.99 (which is 50% off the price of all three books if you bought them separately). It will be available from Amazon, Kobo, iBooks, Nook, and Google Play.

Here’s the blurb (yes, boxed sets have blurbs, too):

Join an Author’s Street Team

What the Heck is an Author Street Team?

old-time microphoneBack in the days of yore, before the internet, savvy advertisers wanting to go beyond mass media in a particular market hired people to promote the product, service, or brand. The benefit for the “street team” was being the first to know something, or get free samples and special discounts, or prizes and rewards. Street teams found creative methods and venues for pumping the product — chalk message on the sidewalk, business cards at a popular night club, window sign in a car, etc.

Fast forward to the internet age, and the street team concept now has an online community domain, as well as the regional or local ones in the physical world. Ask five authors what they think a street team should, and you’ll get five different answers. Some authors want beta readers, reviewers, social media sharers, and people willing to evangelize the author’s book. Other others just want a place for their fans to gather and talk, such as an online forum or closed Facebook group.

Some, like me, straddle those ideas, and want a place where our fans can hang out, and we can interact with them, ask them questions, share our progress, but we hope the fans are willing to write reviews in each exchange for free books, or share our new release or 75%-off sale announcements with their friends.

Join My Author Street Team

So, if you want to join my street team, I now have a group on Facebook just for you: Carol Van Natta’s Interstellar Corps. No membership requirements, other than asking to join. Hang out, say “hi,” show us a photo of somethine you think looks like one of my characters, share a cool new science story, or just lurk. I’m pretty silly, most days, except when the characters in my work in progress are in desperate peril, and I’m frantically writing so I can rescue them.

Join authors street team

Join a Street Team for Your Chance to Win

By the way, if you love the idea of street teams, and you enter by 26 March, you could join some science fiction romance author teams and have the chance to win a prize.

Jumper’s Hope Wins SFR Galaxy Award for 2016

Jumper’s Hope Wins an SFR Galaxy Award for 2016

Jumper's Hope wins SFR Galaxy Award

Yay, me! Jumper’s Hope, Central Galactic Concordance Book 4, won a 2016 SFR Galaxy Award. I’ve been honored to win this award twice before, for Overload Flux and Minder Rising, so I’m absolutely thrilled to win a third for my virtual shelf.

Jumper's Hope wins SFR Galaxy Award for 2016Judge Lee Kovin selected Jumper’s Hope for “Best Lady Cyborg.” That would be lead character Kerzanna Nevarr, who has a cybernetic thigh and hip, the price she paid for her years of military service in the elite Jumper Corps. While civilians get cloned parts of bone, flesh, and blood, a dark legacy of Jumper service means veterans only get biometal replacements. As Lee said,

“I love cybernetics, and Kerzanna’s have plenty of advantages and drawbacks. Just like organic parts, cybernetics require maintenance and repair. Also, their use has a cost physically and monetarily. Kerzanna often has to weigh her short-term success against her long-term health, which presents fascinating conflict.”

Bonus: Lee, who is also a book blogger and author, is hosting a contest to give away copies of the SFR Galaxy Award-winning books. Check out her delightfully named “Cyber Post Punk Love” blog post and comment on her post with your choice of book to be entered in the drawing.

By the way, all the SFR Galaxy Award winners will be featured in an upcoming article in the USA Today “Happily Ever After” column by author Veronica Scott, who writes the entries for science fiction romance.

Request to readers: If you read and liked Jumper’s Hope, please consider writing a short review on Amazon or your favorite retailer. Think of it as paying forward for the last recommendation you got for a book that you enjoyed. It helps authors when we go to promote our books, as some sales outlets require a set number of reviews before they’ll agree to promote the book.
