The 'Stockdale Moment'
Perry's dopery last night is being compared to the distinguished former admiral James Stockdale, who was smeared as senile for starting his first answer in a VP debate: "Who am I? And why am I here?" He then proceeded to tell about himself, and why he was running with Ross Perot. He was smeared for that association, of course, but especially because he had told the truth about US lies and aggression against Vietnam under LBJ. He had been at the Gulf of Tonkin, and said that the Vietnamese had not, of course, attacked the huge US warships with their little boats. It was phony, like the typical US casus belli.
