The Secret War of the Dulles Brothers

This book is not only very well-written and amply documented, it is prophetic — reminding us of the dark side of our national character that still informs the way we Americans think about ourselves and, unfortunately, conduct foreign policy. Having lived in Guatemala for five years, I know first hand the violent consequences of U.S. efforts at “regime change” to serve the interests of corporate power.

In Kinzer’s description of the U.S-led overthrow of President Arbenz of Guatemala in the 195...

Hands Off the Nuclear Button

Amidst the rising clamor in the US over groping and goosing, America’s Congress is beginning to fret about President Donald Trump’s shaky finger being on the nation’s nuclear button.

The air force officer that dutifully trails the president carries the electronic launch codes in a black satchel that could ignite a world war that would largely destroy our planet.  This is rather more serious than groping and pinching.

The inexperienced Trump has talked himself into a corner over North Korea. ...

Robot Apocalypse

Have you noticed all of the news lately about artificial intelligence and robotics, including some things that sound like absolutely terrible ideas? It’s like scientists are deliberately trying to bring on a robot apocalypse. They clearly don’t watch the same movies that I do.

People are getting more and more onboard with this type of technology. From Alexa to Siri, humans are interacting with artificial intelligence on a regular basis. Siri makes jokes, making the voice from your phone seem...

Surviving Winter Weather

Here in the upper Midwest, winter weather can be absolutely brutal. We’re talking frigid temperatures, freezing rain, feet of snow, and just a whole lot of no fun when you’re trying to go about your daily life.

Sure, if you enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, and skiing, the winter months are like paradise, but for those who are just trying to get to and from work each day, though, things can get dicey.

Fortunately, winter weather rarely hits without some advance warning. While we all like to po...

Russia?

The anti-Russia hysteria that has raged in the US for just over a year now appeared poised to spread to the UK last week after British media learned that three past or present Foreign Office ministers – including Boris Johnson – had been targeted by FBI agents in their investigations into George Papadopoulos and Carter Page.

The reports aroused suspicions that the ‘Leave’ campaign may have taken money indirectly from the Russian government. Of course, the idea that Russian efforts – part of a...

The National Republican Party

After Judge Roy Moore won the Alabama Republican senatorial primary election a few weeks ago, I wrote this:

You can bet that the establishment is not finished trying to destroy Roy Moore—not by any stretch of the imagination. When Trump stumped for Luther Strange last week, he said that Judge Moore would have a hard time winning the general election. He said that because he knows that not only will Roy Moore have to defeat the Democrat establishment, he will have to again defeat the Republica...

Mexico, As It Is and Wasn’t

For Americans concerned about  Mexico and Mexicans, and what sort of wights they be, a little history may help. We seem to know almost nothing about a bordering nation of 130 million. It is not what most of us think it is. It is certainly not what the Loon Right would have us believe.

For many years, until 1910, Mexico was run by Europeans, lastly under Porfirio Diaz, for the benefit of Europeans. Literacy was extremely with economic conditions to match. The country was indeed, to borrow a fa...

Trump’s Anti-Peace Asia Trip

President Trump’s 5-country Asia tour has nothing to do with seeking peace anywhere, it has not even to do with diplomacy – it is entirely a warmongering business trip for the Military Industrial Complex. It is amazing that the world doesn’t catch on.

We know about Obama’s several years of pivoting to Asia. It resulted largely in the TPP, the Transpacific Partnership, a trade agreement between 12 countries including the US. The first thing Trump did when he came on board is canceling it, clai...

Big Conservative Media?

In the era of Trump, Deplorables would be well served to rethink the high esteem in which they have held Big Conservative media, or The Big Con.

There are two kinds of Big Con pundits:

On the one hand, we have those who, after decades of insisting to the GOP base that the election of Democrats is tantamount to national suicide, not only failed to rally behind the GOP presidential nominee when his name was Donald J. Trump, but actively sought to sabotage Trump’s prospects both as candidate and...

I Never Watched House of Cards

This caught my eye.

The problem with “House of Cards” is it paints everyone in Washington with the same poison brush. I suspected it would bad for our brand from the start, but tuned in for the first season out of curiosity. I turned off the first episode after Frank Underwood killed a dog with his bare hands. After a year of persuading, friends talked me out of my boycott. I gritted my teeth through three more episodes, until Frank Underwood was in bed with a 20-something female reporter 30...
