PETER HITCHENS: We ruined Britain but what do people get furious about? A cake in a Tupperware box

CaptureThis is Peter Hitchenss Mail on Sunday column

How mad we all are, demanding Alexander Johnsons resignation because someone brought a cake into his office, quite possibly without his knowledge.

The true madness is in the lawless rules under which he has been fined by the police a form of punishment expressly banned by the 1689 Bill of Rights, one of the foundation stones of our liberty.

If I thought he would be replaced by anyone better, Id be perfectly happy for Johnson t...

Some things you may not have realised about the Ukraine crisis

Some cold, hard facts they dont tell you about Ukraine

Here are some facts about the Ukraine crisis you may not be aware of. I have listed them to try to cool down the hot temper of so much of the debate about this issue, which threatens to widen and deepen an appalling war.

Q. How long have Western countries been giving military aid to Ukraine?

A. The US has been giving Ukraine generous foreign and military aid since 1991, when Ukraine became a country. In the decade after 1991, Ukraine ...

PETER HITCHENS: Marriage is less binding than a car lease... and it's children who suffer

CaptureThis is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column

Since last Wednesday, when no-fault divorce became law south of the border (Scotland did this in 2006), civil marriage in England has become little more than a middle-class foible.

Families are temporary arrangements, easily scattered. Why should most people bother with a commitment so readily torn up that it isnt worth the paper its scribbled on?

I say civil marriage because I believe there are still couples from all layers ...

My reply to Stephen Haworth and some others (I did not want to waste them on the comments section alone)

A Ms Griffin wrote: 'I cannot believe that the Mail on Sunday are giving air space and credence to this ridiculous propaganda by Mr Hitchens

Its articles like this that give Putin in his man cave the erroneous believe that what he is doing is justified. Mr Mr Hitchens is justifying Russian murder with Ukraine corruption.'
***PH asks: Perhaps Ms Griffin could point to any words I have written or spoken which 'justify Russian murder'. I have repeatedly ad without reservation condemned the Russian ...

PETER HITCHENS: The USA wants this war... so it can drive Russia back to the Stone Age

Capture1This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column

This is not a war between Ukraine and Russia. It is a war between the USA and Russia, in which both sides are cynically using Ukraine as a battering ram.

The people of Ukraine will gain nothing and lose much from being treated in this way. They fight and die or lose their homes and flee. We pour in more weapons and shout encouragement from a safe distance. Russia wrecks the joint.

What Ukraine actually needs is action to cure its festering, un...

PETER HITCHENS: Don't whinge now - you should have stopped the Chancellor two years ago

This is Peter Hitchenss Mail on Sunday column

RishiIf you don't like Rishi Sunak's nasty new taxes, or the wild inflation now destroying your savings and the value of your income, then you should have paid attention to me.

Two years ago, pretty much to the day, I was virtually alone in opposing the almost unanimous frenzy of fear and panic which strangled the economy, caused Mr Sunak to lose his head and spend billions he had not got and, of course, devastated the NHS.

I was called a number of...
